According to what I've been reading, Shickellamy was born to a French father and a Cayuga mother and raised in the tribe. He was then captured by the Oneidas and raised in their tribe. Because of his mental acuity, he was selected by the Iroquois to represent the tribe in negotiations with the white man. He did this for 20 years. Two of Shickellamy's sons were Tachnechdorus and Tagahjute. The prior followed in his father's footsteps and became known as John. The later became known as James Logan. In error, Tachnechdorus became known as John Logan, brother of James Logan. I have not found references as to the nationality of Shickellamy's wife, but if she was a white woman, Shickellamy's sons would have been 3/4 white and 1/4 Indian. Never say never. That’s a first. I live here, right down the road from Shamokin and Northumberland areas, we never heard of Shikellamy being white. He was of Susquehannock heritage and adopted into the Oniedas, as we know it. > -----Original Message----- > From: marysaerie [mailto:marysaerie@stny.rr.com] > http://96.1911encyclopedia.org/L/LO/LOGAN_SIR_WILLIAM_EDMOND.htm > LOGAN, JOHN (c. 1725-1780), also known as TAHGAHJUTE, American Indian > chief, a Cayuga by birth, was the son of Shikel-lamy, a white man who had > been captured when a child by the Indians, had been reared among them, and > had become chief of the Indians living on the Shamokin Creek in what is > now Northumberland county, Pennsylvania..... etc --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
