It has been extremely helpful. I actually found the book that your wife has - found it on e-bay so I bought it since it mentions Andrews name. Looking at this information it appears that all this happens just prior to him being married to Barbara. According to 1900 census it states that they have been married 8 years which puts thier marriage in 1892.I know her arrival date for what was Hungary at the time was 1891. Perhaps church records will help solve some of this part. As I mention earlier I do have my grandfathers baptism document written in Slovak dated in 1899 at St. Mary's. I do have pictures of thier graves - got them from www.findagrave.com. Thanks Again for all you have provided. Dave Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. One thing you'll want to do when you visit the area is go to the cemetery. As I recall it's outside town in an area called Springfield on a hill overlooking town. Most of the churches had cemeteries up there and over the years they merged into one large burial area. There's a caretaker's building where there are maps of the burials, but it's hit or miss whether you'll find the caretaker there. Also, the library downtown has a cabinet of burial records and other genealogy related materials. And you night want to check with the offices of the undertakers in town. I believe one is called Chovka. He did a lot of the Slovak burials. He has not only his own records, but those of some of the funeral homes that have gone out of business. Author: wwmccollum Surnames: Barder Gerrity Smallets Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.northumberland/10011.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Just another small town coincidence - my wife's aunt, Helen Gerrity Smallets, lived next door to Andrew and Barbara Barder on Sixth Street in 1930. She worked in a silk mill and Andrew was a watchman in that mill. My wife has a centenniel book (1868-1968) for the Archdiocese of Harrisburg that has a short history of The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church. Your Andrew Bardar is mentioned as one of the Slovak men who met in St Stanislaus Hall on November 2, 1891 and formed the "Catholic Church Society of the Assumption." The did a survey of Shamokin and found 94 Slovak families. In 1892 they bought land at the corner of Cherry and Clay Streets and in October of that year asked for permission from the bishop to establish a separate parish for the Slovak-speaking people of Shamokin. The first Mass was held in the church on February 2, 1893. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
