I will be at the courthouse in Sunbury either the end of this week or the beginning of next. Since there seems to be considerable interest in naturalizations, I'll make this offer to PANORTHU list subscribers: Anyone searching for a specific name (not just a surname) within a reasonable time period, please email me privately (to reduce the number of posts) and I'll look for it. An example: "John Smith, between 1900 and 1915." PLEASE use as your email subject header: NATURALIZATION REQUEST--SUNBURY and please submit your request by September 4. I will post my findings afterwards in one general post, so all listers can benefit from the results, and will also cc the individuals who made requests. --Ralph

Plus, when I was there myself, i saw that the folks that work there, though very pleasant, do not really understand the passion behind the whole genealogy thing. It is that attitude which kinda puts these types of requests on their back-burner so to speak. Going there yourself, if that is at all possible is a very rewarding experience. I spent the beter part of an entire day, along with my mother there. We found many documents. I cant wait to go back again because i realized i missed looking for even more. Good luck in your search!

Dan et al, What you write about "Blue Mountain" is very true for Berks Co. I also have copies of records written by Pr. Caspar Stoever that mention the "Blue Mountain" in the area of Pennsylvania where he served. My answer was posted on the Northumberland Co. I have the following Smalec's listed on the 1930 US Census for Northumberland County, Coal Township. I can give you more specifics on the village they lived in if you like. My family also lived in the same area for many years. Interestingly, the US Census states "SMALEC" but, my family always knew them as "SMALLETS". John Smalec, Head, 48 yrs old, married. Barbara, wife, 36 yrs old Children: Catherine (14), Melia (11), Anna (9), John (7), Michael (5) and Dora (2). All the children were born in Pennsylvania. Both parents were born in Poland. Her grandfather was Seman Smalec, born August 2, 1874. He was known as Simeon Smalec after he immigrated in 1899 to Shamokin. He first lived with his brother Walter in 1900, then married Catherine Worhacz in 1903. After that the name was spelled various ways (Smolits, Smaletz, Smallets). Walter (Vasil) and Seman had a brother, Theodore, who immigrated in 1908. Many families from Florynka came through Cohoes New York where they lived in a boarding house and worked in the textile mills or foundries. I'd like to know your Smalec background. I'm certain the families are related. Meanwhile, I've attched some photos of Florynka taken when my eife visited in 2000. ==== PANORTHU Mailing List ==== Please visit and make suggestions to enhance the Northumberland County, PA GenWeb site located at http://www.rootsweb.com/~panorthu/
I was under the impression that the Blue Mountain is the rise in the land that basically separates Berks and Schuylkill Counties. It starts in Lebanon County near Green Point and runs to the northeast along the Berks/Schuylkill boundary. It ends northeast of Port Clinton is what I believe is called Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. The Rev Stoever married an ancestor, Christian Stutzmann Jr to Katerina Eckert and his entry carried the phrase "across the Blue Mountain". Perhaps this is what you are looking for. "Blue Hill" is on the west side of the Susquehanna River, at the confluence of the North and West Branches of the Susquehanna. It is in the southeastern tip of Union Co. From the top of the hill, now part of Shikellamy Park, there is an overlook with a grand view of Northumberland across the river and the island in the river between Northumberland and Sunbury. Be advised this area was in Northumberland Co. from 1772 until 1813 when Union Co. was taken off of Northumberland Co. I was resident of the area for many years and never heard of a "Blue Mountain" in or near Northumberland Co.. so I presume this is the place you want to find. You might like to look at the Shikellamy Park Website at http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/parks/shikellamy.asp A lookup on Topozone maps lists Blue Hill separately in both Union Co. and in Northumberland Co., but the listing for Northumberland Co. is in error. If you use the Topozone locator to go to both maps, both maps that come up will show you the Blue Hill in Union Co., on the west side of the river. Nelson R. According to Floyd's book he is buried in Shamokin Cem. His name was Joseph Snyder - died Feb 1, 1876 and his wife was Annie (Haller) Snyder - died Aug 5, 1881. I have uncovered much about him from both Floyd and Bell's books as he was one of the pioneers of Shamokin where he kept a hotel in the first half of the 1800s. I would appreciate any info that could steer me to his grave - section and plot. Thus far he is the only one of my 16 grt grt grandparents whose graves I have not visited and photographed. I did not have the patience to look through that large cemetery on my last two annual visits but perhaps you could steer me in the right direction for my next annual visit in 2004.
