Interments were begun here in the 1860's or 1870's when the property was still owned by a coal company. The "Alaska Colliery" was operated nearby, and thus the name "Alaska Cemetery" attached itself to this. In 1880 The Mt. Carmel Cemetery Company acquired about 5 acres here from the Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Company and established their cemetery (later adding more acreage). It was not until 1894 that a then well-known Lodge, the JrOUAM ( the Junior Order, United American Mechanics) acquired ground from the P&R for its cemetery, which became known as the Oak Hill Cemetery. So death records mentioning the Alaska Cemetery almost certainly refer to the former and Oak Hill to the latter. I hope this reduces the confusion surrounding these two cemeteries.

To: Anonymous McClung Since your McCLUNG family came into Pennsylvania in the 1730s, you may want to bear the following in mind. Northumberland Co. was not established until 1772, when it was taken off of Philadelphia Co., established in 1682. You might find some helpful civil records (e.g., land transfers, taxes, etc.) in Philadelphia Co. Your McClungs probably had Scottish roots and as such they were almost certainly Presbyterians. The Presbyterian Church in the USA organized its general presbytery in 1706. Subdivisions over the years have produced a number of Presbyterian denominations in this country. You might get some guidance about archived Presbyterian church records from the 1730's if you contact today's largest single group of Presbyterians. They have direct roots back to the 1706 general presbytery. Their basic Website is at http://www.pcusa.org/ and their index search page is at http://www.pcusa.org/search/index.htm . First: An apology to those who requested naturalization information. I had much less time than anticipated for this at the courthouse, and couldn't get to everything. I expect to return there this Friday, and will try again. But here is at least some info: To Jay M. Osman: I found no Osmans/Asmans in the 1780 - 1800 time period. To Vince Zotkiewicz: No Paul/ Pawel Miedswiecki, but there is a Peter, a native of Russia, age 28, declaration of intent 9.11.1911. I did not have time to look at the actual record, just the index. If this Peter would be of interest, please email me and I'll get this info for you. To Stephanie Boyd: No Michael or Nicholas Gregorowicz. No Jacob Romanowskie, but there's a Jacob Ramanski, a native of Austria, age 25, intent filed 1896 and petition 1899. There are also various Joseph Romanoskis, but this is the only jacob who comes close. Let me know if you want this, and/or the Josephs. John Hodoba: there's a later one, spelled that way in 1899/1899 (age 21) and also a John Huddabe, age 34, native of Austria, 1892/1894. Email me and let me know if you want one or both. To Diane White: No luck on your Boslegos or Pauline Rutkowski, but I found your John Aleksa. I didn't have time to copy his petition, but I did get a copy of his declaration of intent, (my scanner only does letter size, so I clipped the top and bottom, but nothing important.) This is from Dec. Book 5 #1553. I'll try to get the Petition next time. For those who may not be familiar with the declarations (petitions usually contain even more info), I've posted the Aleksa declaration here. (Of course, the info contained in these varied from time period to time period, depending on the laws then in effect) : http://home.epix.net/~ralphs/Aleksa1.jpg (Diane: please email me once you've downloaded this, so I can remove it...I only get so much free web space) --Ralph

The church was founded about 1803, and the actual stone church building was built in 1816. The Northumberland County Historical Society has some transcripts of their early baptisms and burials, but not marriages. I don't believe the church has the original registers anymore because, from what I've heard, members tended to store them in their private homes and they were lost track of over the years. I could be wrong, though, if anyone else out there knows more? John
