So far in my "digging" I have not come across my line spelled like your line, HOWEVER, I am told they are one in the same and the "mispellings" were because: 1. some family just didn't know how to spell and did the best they could. 2. Some changed the spelling to disassociate themselves from family members because of disagreements and fueds of one kind or another. At the present I can't put my hands on my large family notebook because my house is for sale and it is packed up. I will however try to find it and check for the husbands name...it doesn't ring a bell but it has been several years since I really went through my research. I am going to keep your name and address in my files and I will get back with you. Again, thanks for the response! Patti

    2. Nelson Sulouff
    3. Donna, For this response I'm including the ListServs that have been affected by your interesting comments on the town of Pillow and other counties involved in the discussion. It's easy for a subscriber to delete any duplicated messages received. I've driven through Pillow a fair number of times in my younger days and always had to be careful not to blink when I knew I was coming up on it!(:D) We lived in Point Twp. across the river from Sunbury, and us "Dutchified" people spoke of Pillow, Mandata, Malta and Dalmatia as being "Dowen pack uff Suntpury." My PENNSYLVANIA LINE p. 267 agrees that Pillow is in Mifflin Twp., Dauphin Co., but my AAA highway map clearly shows Pillow located north of the Dauphin-Northumberland Co. line, and that would place it in Lower Mahanoy Twp., Northumberland Co. Did AAA make a mistake? To resolve the conflict I looked up Pillow on the Topozone map, which portrays topographical features and boundary lines if you want to know about such things. The map at http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=40.64083&lon=-76.80278 clearly shows Pillow folded within a "half-circle loop" of the Mahantango Creek, virtually surrounded by steep mountain sides, except for the inlet and the outlet of the creek. Quite an unusual geological feature and worth looking at! I don't think there's another place quite like it, anywhere. When one looks at the surrounding topographical features, one can easily see why Pillow did not become a larger town! Its boundaries were set by nature. Since Pillow lies south of Mahantango Creek, the dividing line between the two counties, it must lie in Dauphin Co. The people who drew the AAA map made the mistake when they drew a straight line south of Pillow for the county line instead of circling around the north side of Pillow the way the creek does! Just a lesson on how to study topography when studying ancestral areas. It's enlightening. 1. [PANORTHU-L] Mt. Carmel Library Newspapers on Microfilm
    2. Eileen Souza
    3. I don't think my reply to the lister who inquired about Mt Carmel Library and newspapers got through so just in case I will repeat it. I recently researched the newspapers on microfilm at the Mt Carmel Library. I know they went back to at least 1900. I researched the year 1906. It can be a long process because theold newspapers did not have sections for birth, marriage, obits as we do today. You must review every page because they put this information all over the paper. It took me two days because my great grandfather died 12/25/06 and I started my search 1/1/06. It is a daily paper. I am sure they have 1912. The phone number to call to see if they have 1895 is 570-339-0703. Another thing the library does to raise money is sell an annual historical calander full of great old pictures. Good Luck, Eileen

    1. [PANORTHU-L] Couldn't Keep Fascinated Public Away From the Tomb
    2. The following article taken from a 1935 edition of the American Weekly, Inc. is of interest to Bohner descendents: COULDN'T KEEP FASCINATED PUBLIC AWAY FROM THE TOMB "Burial vaults and coffins are such unpleasant things that most people try to avoid the suggestion of them, but in a cemetery in Pa it has become necessary to close up the vault of a man and his wife to keep curiosity seekers away. On a number of occasions spectators have broken into the vault, impelled by a well-known type of morbid curiosity. The two persons occupying caskets inside the vault near Pillow, Pa are Daniel and Julianna Bohner. They have been there more than a quarter of a century, but as time goes on, public interest in the vault and the glass-topped coffins inside it seems to grow. When the well-to-do farmer and his wife, thirty years before on their quiet hilltop of the same soil which had brought them prosperity and happiness, they did not take into consideration the intrusion of a curious world. Anxious never to be parted, even after death, and hoping never to allow waning years to blur the memory of them among their ten children, the couple set down and systematically figured a plan of burial. Glass topped caskets were the solution. So that they were sure that their plan would be carried out to the last detail they purchased the coffins and placed them in the attic of their farmhouse after the underground vault had been completed in 1874. The death of Julianna Bohner, the wife, occurred at the age of 81 years on Dec 8, 1898. For six years her loyal husband went regularly to the "burial room", lifted the lid of the coffin and sat with her. She was in her "best" grey satin dress, and looked as lovely as she did in life. On March 29, 1904, the second glass-covered coffin was brought down from the attic, and the 93 year old husband was borne between the aisle of trees, through the heavy iron door and down the steps into the couples vault. In compliance with their last wishes, members of the family and friends "visited" with them frequently. Keys to the lock which barred outsiders were distributed among them. But the quiet communion which they had planned for their family was destined to be disrupted. Gradually the community of Pillow grew in population and consequently new graves appeared around the Bohner vault. Word of the strange burial place was passed mouth to mouth and the curious flocked to the site to get just a glimpse of the interior as the door swung open to admit relatives. Dissatisfied with this meager view, people began breaking the lock and forcing entrance into the sacred room. Just as rapidly as the locks were broken, members of the family replaced them. During one of these forced entrances, the handle on the coffin in which Daniel Bohner was resting was broken, allowing air to seep in and start decomposition. Not long ago another of these intrusions resulted in the glass being shattered on Julianna Bohner's coffin, but his time there were no signs of decomposition. Investigation disclosed her body to be as soldid as a rock, as though petrified. At once the family feared that if this knowledge were obtained by exhibit hunters there would be danger of the body being stolen. Today the iron door is bolted, by order of William Bohner, a grandson who is a mill owner in Pillow. And so, side by side, their wishes fulfilled for more than 30 years after death, Daniel and Julianna Bohner are for the first time being completely shut off from the living world." 1. RE: [PANORTHU-L] Old Mt. Carmel Newspapers Available?
    2. Eileen Souza
    3. Yes they do because I searched 1906 for my great-grandfathers obituary while I was there. I believe they have them quite early. You might try calling them, their number is 570-339-0703. Be prepared to spend a lot of time in those years. They did not have an obituary, marriage or birth section in those days. The imformation is scattered all over the paper. The librarian is very helpful. I started at 1/1/1906 (having got the year from the tombstone) and it turned out to be in 12/25/06 issue. Took me two days at the library. 3. Hi Chris My Northumberland co YOUNGs are at least a generation before the family that you are looking for but, I have a couple clues for you. There is a John Young family listed on the LDS site that could be very much of interest to you. The name John is prominent in my line. My Samuel YOUNG was born in Cumberland co in 1762 amd moved to Northumberland co where he served in the milita under a Capt Samuel Young. From the histories of Northumberland co I find that Capt Sam had brothers James and John. There are many Youngs in Dauphin co PA that you might want to look at.
