You are exactly right. The original location of the church and cemetery was in Upper Mahanoy Township. The church burned down about 1943 and was rebuilt a few miles down the road in Pitman and was renamed St. James. John
What is the location of Jacob's (Howerter's) Lutheran church? The book by Dr. Schwalm indicates that is was in Upper Mahanoy Twp., Northumberland Co., but is now known as St. James Lutheran church in Pitman, Eldred Twp. in Schuylkill Co. Is this a case of a church being on a county line and rebuilding a few feet away puts it in another county, or has the location of the church been moved a few miles? I assume that any cemetery is in the original location. Lora (not in any particular order) Searcher for Lefflers, NASCAR fan, Collector of Shawnee pottery
Tim, What records from the Court house are you looking for? I know for a fact all the marriage license books are there and intact. I made copies of marriage licenses from the 1800's. Will's from 1901.
From what I read - some of the office equipment was damaged - but it wasn't really a flood - it was a broken water pipe in the ceiling (they were working in the judges chambers above the register and recorders office.) Does anyone know whether any Northumberland County records were damaged in the courthouse flood on January 11? A news report on today's Daily Item web site mentions that the Register and Recorder's Office was affected, but gives no further details. Thanks Tim

Hi all, I sent for 4 death certificates and they were all sent back to me and the reasons they had listed were because of id which I sent and signing the request which I also did, do I went on the site and the certificates went from $3 to $9!!!!! A $6 jump. :( I was very bummed! Birth Certificates are $10 now as well. Just thought I'd give the heads up if anyone was sending for one. :( Heather
I think I already know the answer to this but, figured it was best to be sure. Is there a Shamokin Historical Society? Or is just included in the Northumberland County Historical Society in Sunbury? There was an article in the Shamokin newspaper during the Centennial about my Ggg-grandfather who served in the Civil War. According to the article, the lead bullet that he was injured with and several documents from the war were going to be on display during the Centennial in Welker's Cigar Store on Shamokin St. Some family members believe the items were donated to someone/some place after the Centennial festivities were over. I'm hoping that the historical society, or maybe just some local history buff, can help me find out what happend to these items. Thanks! Heather Sharp-Makal
Hello Heather, It has been along time since we have communicated. How are you doing? I was up to Catawissa over the holidays but only for a few days. I have been so busy at work that I have not had much time to do a lot of research, especially on the Fryberger line. I still owe you a copy of the deed information that I have. I will send it along to you. I also have heard about the display of the bullet and other materials for the Centennial but I never really got a change to research it any further. Hope someone answers your query. I believe at one time there was mention of starting a Historical Society in Shamokin. Someone from Elysburg was trying to get it started but I never heard any more about it. Take Care and please keep in touch. I am Donna Hamersly Carlson from Minneapolis, Minnesota, born in Humboldt County, Iowa. My Northumberland County ancestry is more supposition than fact, but goes like this: From PA Archives, Series 5, Vol. l, pp. 85, "Jacob Hamersley was in the service of the Provence of PA in Capt. James Patterson Co., at Fort Augusta on June 25, 1757. (Father, perhaps, of the following....?) From Pension Application of James Hamersly (Rev War), it states: "On August 26, 1838, James Hamersly, age 72, appeared before the Judge of Pendleton County, KY and swore that he was a private in the Company of Capt. McCoy in the PA Line for 7 months. He stated that he was born on the 14 Nov. 1760 at Fort Augusta, Northumberland Co., PA. He presumes that a brother of his, John, who long since emigrated to Indiana, could swear to his service..... From Pension Application of John Hamersly (Rev War), he states "That he enlisted in the Army of the United States on the 10th day of March, 1778 at Valley Forge in the State of PA for the term of 3 years, by joining a company under the command of Captain Jacob Humphrey and served in the 6th Regiment of the PA Line, and that this Regiment was commanded by Col. Josiah Harmar, that a (WM) Talbot was major. "That at the time of his enlistment he resided in Northumberland County, State of PA"... There were supposedly five other brothers to James and John: among them Isaac, Andrew, and Abraham and it is thought that they came from Ireland (Scots Irish I presume). Any assistance or clues as to how to find more information regarding this family, as well as the "proof", would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Donna
Chuck, not only is Bells on line at Northumberland, but Floyds from 1911 is also there . Northumberland co web page , archives . both are searchable , great site. Hi, I have allot of family buried in Summit Baptist Cemetery, Irish Valley, Pa and I was wondering if anyone knew of pictures of the church that was there many years ago? I'd love to have picture's of it. Thanks for your time. Heather
Dear Sue, What on earth is "Bell's History"? I couldn't find it on the web site you listed either. Are you from Northumberland County? I think there is a Snydertown there too and my birth mother said she was born there ( there are 5 Snydertowns in Pa. which has really presented me with a terrible problem....too, she was so poor that she was born at home never making it into the record books) love'nstuff, Chuck

Would you look for Mary DAVIS, husband Ulysses Grant DAVIS, his father Evan DAVIS, perhaps her father Thomas WENNER, and any of Mary's children or Evan's family? Thank you so much! I'm in Michigan and haven't made it out there, yet! Ann
Bill, Thank you for taking a look in the Harmony Cemetery listing for me. I appreciate your time and efforts. While I don't see the connection yet, it doesn't mean it isn't there, so I will definitely save this email for future reference.
