Sorry for cross postings VA has made it easier and faster for the public to get answers about family history. The agency has put on the Web 3.2 million records for veterans buried at 120 national cemeteries since the Civil War. The VA's Nationwide Gravesite Locator, at http://www.cem.va.gov, also has records for some state veterans cemeteries and burials in Arlington National Cemetery since 1999.
The story just does not die out we are suppose to be related to Indians. This is the closest I have found to Indain. Can any one please give me an idea who this LOGAN family might of been? 1728 Shicellamy/Swataney (Our Enlightner) a man of strong character and statesman like vision. The Iroquois confederacy appointed him as "King" of the Lenape in 1752 to replace Shingas. He was part Lenape and was go between for the Lenape and the Pennsylvania Government. He died at Shamokin in 1748. He had 4 sons. John Shickellamy and Tahgahjute who later became John and James Logan. Head Chief. . JAMES1 CHERRY He married MARGARET LOGAN June 05, 1760 in PA. . Floyd History book. . The name of James Cherry appears as a taxable in Shamokin township in 1788; he was probably the first settler, and cleared land at Luke Fidler, Springfield, (East end of a Shamokin on a Hill)Another member of this family had a distillery on the hill east of Shamokin. Thank you Jeanie
Can some one please tell me more. In Shamokin I am told there is suppose to be a Luke's Fidlers colliery. Does any one know is this old cemetery still visible and how do I find it? The "Cherry family" were the first settlers in the Shamokin area, He cleared off a farm at Luke Fidler, . Shamokin's first burial plot was located there. The erosions of time have obliterated grave markers; however, a low concrete wall surrounding the original enclosure is still visible. This may still be seen and is located adjacent to Route 61 on the south side. Cherry's sons or relatives also settled here. Joseph Cherry settled on the plot near where the F&S Brewery stands. By the division of the Clark tract in 1803, John Cherry was assigned the lower western portion. Prior to the war of 1812, Abraham Cherry built a saw mill on Shamokin Creek opposite the Cameron Colliery. Another member of the family had a distillery on a hill east of Shamokin. . Thank you Jeanie
Marie That sounds like a worthwile project but shucks anyway and I was thinking (hoping) that I might have a new lead. Thanks for the reply anyway. Ray --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. I don't have any connection to Henry Ware. Most of my family is from Northumberland County so when I came across an item on Ebay I bought it. I would like to get it to Henry's family free. The more that I think about your query the more interesting it becomes. My Samuel Young was born in Cumberland co and moved to Northumberland co where he served in the militia. Many years later here in IL two of his sons married daughters of a Malachi Ware. We do not know where that family came from. It would be interesting to know if the two families were acquainted in early PA. When was your Henry Ware in Northumberland co?? Thanks Ray --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. I have a difficult search I hope some one can please help me with.. Does any one have a JOE Meiser BOOK for the Shamokin Cemetery they could please look up these names for me and see if there is any notes besides the names. for Catharn RISH and her husband buried next to her is buried as John RASH. In the Shamokin Old Cemetery . Death dates for her are July 10 1888 for Cathern and for John RASH September 10 1880 I am trying to find more on Catharn / Catherine -RUSH/RISH/ROSH/RASH her first husband was an ? OSMAN/OSSMAN/ORMAN I have not found them yet in any 1870 census I would think in Coal TWP Northumberland CO PA? . Since she is there in 1880. She is the mother of Henry A , Frederick , John and Martha all born in Prussia but live in the USA as of 1866. I have found them in 1880 census list them as ORMAN and on a Tombstone one is OSSMAN but the family uses the name OSMAN. Catherine was a Widow and she remarried and in 1880 she lives in Coal TWP in 1880 with all four children above. But her name in the 1880 census is Catherine RUSH and she is 59 years old. Her husband name is John ROSH in the very same census records. He is only 40 years old. He died in a Coal mine accident in 1880. Thank you Jeanie
I found the following Mount Carmel photographs for sale on Ebay. All seem to have been taken by same photographer and located in the same estate sale so are most likely the same Mount Carmel family. Hi, Janet. I am not researching this family in particular, however, my 3rd Great Grandaunt married one of David's son's, William D. Eckert. I have David's obit, but unfortunately it does not mention his parents. If you would like me to send you a copy by email, let me know. I also have pictures of his and Elizabeth's headstones if you'd like those as well. The Milton library does have the local newspaper on microfilm. Your thought of there being a write-up on their 50th anniversary is a good one. I have a few anniversaries copied from the newspaper as well, so I know they covered such events. Just out of curiosity, are you tracing all of his descendants? If need be, I could help you out a bit with his son, William, and family if you are. Also, do you know where David and Elizabeth were in the 1830 and 1840 census records? You mention 1850, but if they were married in 1827 you may be able to find them in 1830 and 1840 in their own household. Perhaps a brother or the parents live close by if you can locate David in these records. I'll glance through my notes to see if there's anything else I have written down they may be of help. Hello, Thought I would pass this along.... the one on the left is animated. http://www.negenealogy.com/pa/pa_maps.htm Rebecca
Teri, Have you checked this out: www.pagenweb.org/map/index.html? It contains maps of Pennsylvania county formation over time. It might narrow things down a little. And I believe most of the county sites in the PaGenWeb project have info about their county's formation-- exact dates, from what original county, etc. Stephanie > Don, > > Thanks for the information. Stephanie, Ya, I saw those maps. Those were the one's I was going by when I went to the Phila Genealogical Society to do research. They have a Pa book of map formations though, and it was a little different than what's online. I've been using both since then just to get an idea of the counties formed at what time. Thanks! Don, Thanks for the information. I think with the time periods and counties the way they were, I might have to check in Virginia, Maryland and Delaware as well. Maybe even New York and New Jersey. Been looking for the parents of this guy so long. I'm grasping for anything I can think of. He was in Northampton Co. when he married Elizabeth Christman in 1827. The Northumberland Co. History says he was a native of Northampton Co. By 1850 he was living in Milton, Northumberland Co. Any clues anyone? Also, David and Elizabeth were married 50 years. Thought if I had any luck, there might have been a party and it might have been written up in a Milton Newspaper. Anyone know if they are microfilmed anyplace.
