    1. Odd name ?????
    2. Jeanie Stout
    3. In looking for my Mary Ann Rockwell before she was married in 1865 probably in Mt Carmel Pa at the young age of 16 . I find this name Mary MAHANOCK A Mary and John in 1860 Mary is 9 and John is 7. My Mary should be 9 the same year. . Both Mary and John are living in Mt Carmel in 1860 with older people from Ireland not parents in a large boarding home but these kids are born in PA. My Mary Ann parents are suppose to be born in Wales. Maybe Mac cay/Mackey/Macky etc That the name another family member gave to me but I can not find her in 1860 under any similiar name. But all I find is the strange name above and can't find John later either. I do not have 1850 census to hunt for a similiar name for her folks. Jeanie

    3. Ray, so do I. A distant cousin says she remembers Sarah (unknown) sitting on the porch smoking her corncob pipe in the Tamaqua area. Apparently either a Frank or a Jacob Maury (various spellings) "went west for awhile' and came back with an "Indian" bride. I have records on the Maury's in Schuylkill county, but cannot find Sarah. We are not even sure if her name was Sarah in reality. Somewhat frustrating, huh? 3. According to what I've been reading, Shickellamy was born to a French father and a Cayuga mother and raised in the tribe. He was then captured by the Oneidas and raised in their tribe. Because of his mental acuity, he was selected by the Iroquois to represent the tribe in negotiations with the white man. He did this for 20 years. Two of Shickellamy's sons were Tachnechdorus and Tagahjute. The prior followed in his father's footsteps and became known as John. The later became known as James Logan. In error, Tachnechdorus became known as John Logan, brother of James Logan. I have not found references as to the nationality of Shickellamy's wife, but if she was a white woman, Shickellamy's sons would have been 3/4 white and 1/4 Indian. Never say never. 3. Hello There seems to be quite a bit of Indian heritage showing up here so I will ask about my brick wall. Does anyone know of a YOUNG that was married to an Indian or was raised by an Indian in the Northumberland/Cumberland co area during the period around 1750. My Samuel Young was born in Cumberland co in 1762 and served with the Northumberland co militia in 1778. We know nothing of his parents but have many family stories about him being part Indian. 3. Of course, other sources say it was whites who attached the logan name to the sons: from http://www.cynthiaswope.com/withinthevines/penna/native/Mingo.html " Conrad Weiser records in his journals that he had little difficulty distinguishing between Shikellamyís sons. The elder of the two was called Tachnechdours, or John, and the younger Tahgahjute, or James Logan, so named by his father in honor of the Secretary of the Provincial Council of Pennsylvania. For the next 15 years, both sons were generally referred to as the 'Shikellamies,' and it was not until 1765, when they went their separate ways, that white men began to attach to John's name the surname 'Logan,' by mistake. So it was that both brothers became 'Logan.' Without the name John or James attached to Logan, it became virtually impossible to tell which Logan was meant when spoken of. ....." --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
