Hi Diana and all, I saw what you said about no Conrad in Oley in the = book Oley Valley Heritage and you said it only goes up to 1775. I have Conrad's in my family. My Conrad's are basically from = Ruscombmanor and Rockland Twp. I am still working on them. There are so = many branches I have no info on them. So I've been gathering what info I = can find to try to connect them. Also my Conrad's changed their spelling = from Cronrath to Conrad. There are various variants and I'm told it was = originally something like Grunrate. Looking at my records I have a Jacob = Conrad but no location. Jacob Conrad md Maria Catharina=20 children: 1. Joseph Conrad bn 6 Jan 1759 I have other Conrad's from mostly the Rockland Twp area born in that = time period. Most of it is of my direct line.=20 I also believe that branches of my family moved to the Upper Bern, Upper = Tulpehocken, Bethel and other areas around there in Berks County. My = Conrad, Noll, and Batz surnames do appear up there and I know the widow = on one of my Nolls died in Upper Bern Twp in 1835. I believe the Conrad, = Noll and Batz up there and in Bern are related to the ones that were in = Rockland and Ruscombmanor and yes they did go to Oley (it's right next = door to Rockland). And they went to District and Longswamp and even = Muhlenberg Twp.=20 crystal Dear Diana, Would it be possible to look up Conrads in your book = Oley Valley Heritage, The Colonial Years: 1700-1775 by Philip Pendleton, = 1994? I have found records of my ancester Jacob Conrad living there before 1770 = and wondered who his family might be. Thank you. 3. US-IMMIGRANTS-POST-1800-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, December 29, 2004 12:00 PM It is a list of vessels sailing out of Gloucester Massachusetts, and their crews who were lost at sea between the years 1830 to October 1, 1873. There are 1437 names of those lost, plus the names of 296 Vessels in this set of records. Sometimes passengers were on board, as well as crew members Olive Tree Volunteers have finished up to 1860 so I have put these online. The rest will follow as completed. Start at the intro then click through by year for lists of those lost. http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/gloucester.shtml Some of the places mentioned where the ships went down are given as Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, Boston, Maine, and more. There are interesting tidbits with the lists, both of those who died and those who survived. For example the tale of this young man on board the Sevo in 1857, would be great to have if he is your ancestor! "Winthrop Sargent, a lad of twelve years crawled out to the end of the bowsprit, and as the vessal was going down, grasped a splitting table which floated by, and by his cries attracted the attention of those on board the steamer, who rescued him with much difficulty" The story goes on to add "On the return trip of the steamer, young Sargent was brought home, and at two o'clock in the morning, was landed at Eastern point, and lad though he was, commenced his lonely journey of walking to town. He reached his father's house at about four o'clock, and knowing that he slept in a bed-room on the lower floor, tapped on the window. His father immediately awoke and exclaimed, "Who is there?", "It's your boy Winthrop, " was the reply. Mr. Sargent at first thought it must be the ghost of the lad, as he had given him up as drowned, but young Winthrop had no idea of being taken for a ghost, and soon gave evidence that he was alive and well, which caused great rejoicing in the family. " Here's an example of what you can find written about those who perished: "Schooner JOHN FRANKLIN was lost while coming from Prince Edward Island, in the winter of 1858-59. Had several passengers on board, and it is supposed fourteen persons went down in this vessel. Her Crew list was as follows: John McDonald, Master; Dennis Murphy, Mate, John Cogle, Neil McNeil, Angus Chisholm, Edward Malady. The family of Cogle were among the Passengers"

    2. Some of you may recall that I have been looking for DAVIS, FETZER, and WENNER family in NE PA and Northumberland Co., among other places...and, although Deb and Elaine have been super helpful, I had a real brick wall going back in the family. On Rootsweb, I signed up for a single name e-mail listserv (DAVIS) and we had a new list administrator. So we had a mini-roll-call...and I was found by a third cousin in the DAVIS line who shared a *ton* of info with me! Elaine said "it wasn't going to happen," when I had hoped for a researching family member to appear...but it did! I am so excited! Happy New Year to you all! 2. Hi: Just a short note. You mention Mahantango twp, but I'm not sure why. From the description of the land in question, this would seem ot have been in Mahanoy Township (later it could have been Jackson, Washington or Upper Mahanoy.) If you provide the full deed description I can probably locate this tract on a current tax assessment map so that you can know precisely where this land was. ---Ralph Schwalm > > From: Marie Brasington <madamemab@yahoo.com> > Date: 2004/12/27 Mon PM 09:31:13 EST > To: PANORTHU-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [PANORTHU-L] HOUTZ/PFEIFER, GREEN BRIAR CREEK, 1783 > > Searching for information on Philip Peter Houtz and > wife, Catherine, who sold 100 acres located about a > half mile from Green Briar Creek in 1783 to a John > George Pfeifer who owned the adjoining land at that > time. > > According to a copy of an indenture that I have, these > lands were obtained from the Proprietaries of > Pennsylvania May 5, 1777 by Philip Peter Houtz. 3. Searching for information on Philip Peter Houtz and wife, Catherine, who sold 100 acres located about a half mile from Green Briar Creek in 1783 to a John George Pfeifer who owned the adjoining land at that time. According to a copy of an indenture that I have, these lands were obtained from the Proprietaries of Pennsylvania May 5, 1777 by Philip Peter Houtz. In 1783 when this indenture was made, Philip Peter was listed as a resident of Bethal Township in Lancaster County. Are these two family names common to Mahantango Township as found in early records?? Does the Green Briar Creek still exist or is it the same one as the Swabian Creek which runs through this township? Is the Houtz name found in any of the Mahantango Twp. church/cemetery records? This indenture was recorded February 27, 1796....could this mean that is when Philip Peter Houtz died? Marie __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? 3. Hi, Just to make sure that other Northumberland Co., PA researchers know about their ancestors and relatives who were at Valley Forge - check the listings of "Who Served" on the webpage: www.ushistory.org/valleyforge my ggg-grandfather is there with his name as Christian STOLSMAN. We knew him as a STUTZMAN, but I have copies of his Revolutionary pay envelopes with the surname as STOLZMAN, and on it as corrected to STUTZMAN. Actually, the earliest spelling of his surname in America is STUTZMANN, over in Germany and Switzerland it was STEUDSMAN. This STUTZMAN family was Evangelical Lutheran, in Germany, Switzerland, and Pennsylvania in the counties of Philadelphia, Berks, Schuylkill, Mifflin, York, and Northumberland. A bit more information of this family is that Susan was the daughter of Adam STUTZMAN, born 1809, and his first wife whose wife was named Susan - no maiden name known. Adam was a teamster and living in a county just west of the Susquehanna River. Later is second wife was Barbara SNYDER, born 1838, the daughter of Hannah DIETRICH and Adam SNYDER and they were living in Mt. Carmel. And, yes, these families were very much involved in the Anthracite Fire Co. of Mt. Carmel. I remember in the 1940's that my grandmother Laura STUTZMAN WEARY baked doughnuts for the Anthracite Fire Co. - think it was on Donut Day, Shrove Tuesday, but the date may be wrong - I was living in Philadelphia then, and just visiting Mt. Carmel usually during summer breaks from school. for more on Adam STUTZMAN, see my webpage: www.angelfire.com/sc/elida ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jeanie Stout" <msjbostian@earthlink.net> To: <PANORTHU-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, December 27, 2004 8:55 AM Subject: [PANORTHU-L] On line books > Here is the two in Northumberland that I used often. > Does any one know of any other great on line books? > Jeanie > Northumberland Co., History Books. > > http://www.rootsweb.com/~panorthu/ > > This has Herburt C Bell 1891 > > J L Floyd 1911 books. > > Columbia Co., History Books. > http://www.rootsweb.com/~pacolumb/cchome.htm? > > > Hanna DIETERICH, born 1813, married Adam SNYDER. 2. There was a Peter Stroup who served in the Revolutionary War from Philadelphia, later moved to Northumberland Co. and served from there as well, but was buried in Philly in 1793--and not with his family. Around that time Stroups starting appearing in Philly. My 3rd great grandmother was a Stroup. I'm trying to connect the Northumberland and Philly Stroups. My 3rd gr grandmother was Sarah Louisa, known as Louise, daughter of Samuel C, born about 1825 and son of (I think) another Peter who married Elizabeth Hartgen in Philly in 1815. I'd appreciate any help and direction you can give me. Merle
