Greetings, Could anyone tell me if the Alaska Cemetary and the Mt. Carmel Cemetaries are one and the same? I have tried to reach the Volunteer lookup who said she has directories for them, but evidently the e-mail address is no longer valid. Carol
I live in a rural village. Our township supervisors spend money to mow and maintain old church and family cemeteries located in the township. We are fortunate. It is not the case in some surrounding areas. Students from the college and boy scouts sometimes take on the clearing of a cemetery as their project, but that is usually a one time affair and within a few years it is overgrown again. I do believe that it is the responsibility of the governing body to take over the care of these abandoned resting places. I know property owners who still care for graves located on their properties for people to whom they they are not related. And thanks to genealogy a family who found the resting place of their ancestors fully restored the plot and maintain it in an adjacent town. Nancy

From the Shamokin News-Dispatch, Thurs., August 27, 1964 TOWNSHIP MAN DIES FROM EFFECT OF INSECT STING A 64-year-old Coal Township man, who doctors described as being super sensitive to insect stings, died yesterday after he was stung three times by bees in the back yard of his home. Death of Arthur Roy Deppen, Burnside, widely known service station proprietor and supplier of mine lamps and explosives for independent mine operators throughout this section, was due to anaphylactic shock caused by the stings. Deppen collapsed a short time after he entered his home and told his wife that he was stung three times by bees while cutting the grass in his back yard. He was taken to Shamokin State General Hospital in Fairview Fire Company Community Ambulance but was pronounced dead on arrival. The death of Deppen is believed to be the first of its kind in this area during recent years attributed to hypersensitivity to insect stings. Family members said Deppen had been stung on previous occasions and in each incident became violently ill from the insect attacks. A special vaccine had been ordered for Deppen by Dr. James Gehris, local physician, and administration of the serum was to have started yesterday. Prior to collapsing in his home, Deppen told his wife that he was stung in the back of the head behind the ear, on the one arm, and under the arm. A short time before the attack, the Burnside businessman had visited the site of a cottage he was building in the foothills of Line Mountain. Born in Hebe, November 13, 1899, Arthur Roy Deppen was a son of the late Charles and Helen (Geise) Deppen. Educated in schools of the Hebe area, he later moved from Hebe to Gowen City, where he resided until 36 years ago when he moved to Burnside. Mr. Deppen was a carpenter at Burnside, Bear Valley and Henry Clay Colleries for many years. During the past 18 years he operated the Lone Oak Gas Station at Burnside and served as a supplier of miners' lamps and dynamite for independent mine operators of the area. The late Coal Township man was married July 3, 1917 to the former Miss Mary Anna Dewalt. He was a member of Burnside Union Chapel. In addition to his business affiliation, Mr. Deppen was widely known for his interest in hunting and fishing. He was an ardent sportsman for many years. Survivors include the widow, three daughters, Mrs. William (Mary) Heitzman, Burnside; Mrs. Kenneth (Beatrice) Whitmer, Meadowview; and Mrs. George (Betty) Wolf, Campbelltown; seven grandchildren; and one great grandchild. Arrangements for the funeral are under direction of Farrow Funeral Home.

Boozeman, Thanks for the info. I am overwhelmed with the great response I received. I really appreciate it. Kay, Thanks for your help. I have to admit that I didn't think anyone would have any information because most people think I am making it up when I mention the poor house. There was a poor house in Treverton and one in Sunbury there may of been others. I heard my grandma talk about the Poor house in Sunbury. The one in Treverton may still be there it was called this in 1956 and my great great grandma died there. Institutional District Home "Treverton Manor" Treverton Road, Northumberland County PA I think it is still there. As a home for the aging. Do you know the person who was in one if it was one of these years 1900/1910/1920/1930 they would show up in the poor home in a census count. And possibly earlier 1850/1860/1870/1880? I can only look up 1860/1870/1880/1900/1910/1920. Jeanie -------- We would like to invite you to re-visit our website, The POORHOUSE STORY (a clearinghouse for information about 19th century American poorhouses) at http://www.poorhousestory.com We have just published information about how to find the complete list of staff and inmates of The Philadelphia Almshouse in the Blockly Township portion of the 1850 Census in Ancestry.com's Images Online. DIRECTIONS: At the homepage (link above) click on POORHOUSES BY STATE, then on PHILADELPHIA on the table of states. You can find the information either on the PENNSYLVANIA BULLETIN BOARD (link at the bottom of the state page ... below the list of links to county pages) or on the page for PHILADELPHIA County. If you have been to the website recently you may have to click REFRESH or RELOAD on the browser to see the new information. There are other pages on the site which may give you some interesting perspective on poorhouses. They are off the homepage and include: the HISTORY page and the LETTER TO GENEALOGISTS (which explains why you might climb over your own "brick walls" at the poorhouse) as well as FEATURED ARTICLES. There are great tips for researching poorhouse records for yourself on the RECORDS page; and you might want to subscribe to our (almost) monthly newsletter (which you can do in the lower right corner of the homepage). The information on our site will only grow through the submissions of generous readers. If you would like to e-mail me ... please do so off-list because I cannot maintain subscriptions to as many lists as we post messages on. (You can use an e-mail link off one of our web pages.) We hope you enjoy the site! There was also one in the Paxinos area which is in Shamokin Township. It was just down the road from where I lived. I was just little about 6 or 8 years old when it burnt down so I doubt there are any records that survived.
