Meiser Jr. 06/24/2005 Email to a friend Printer-friendly Advertisement Bloom Health KENTUCKY — Dr. Joseph A. Meiser Jr., 84, passed away Wednesday, June 22, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, JoAnn Meiser Deans and her husband, John. Born in Stonington on Jan. 27, 1921, he was a son of the late Joseph A. Sr. and Sallie M. (Bahner) Meiser. Educated in Shamokin Township and Snydertown Borough elementary schools, he attended Sunbury High School, graduating with the Class of 1938. He subsequently received a bachelor of science degree in dairy science from the Pennsylvania State University in 1943. Following enlistment in the U.S. Army during World War II, he saw combat duty with the U.S. 9th Army in Europe. Returning to civilian life, he was awarded an industrial research fellowship at the Pennsylvania State University, which enabled him to obtain a doctorate degree in 1948. On June 12, 1948, he married the former Sarah A. Roadarmel, daughter of William A. Roadarmel and Lottie Hocking Williams of Elysburg. Two daughters, JoAnn Meiser Deans and the late Diane M. Meiser, and one son, John Addison Meiser, were born to this marriage. Following an eight-year appointment at Michigan State University as an assistant professor in teaching and research, Dr. Meiser accepted the position of plant manager of Twin Pines Dairy Inc. in Detroit, Mich., in 1956. He was subsequently elevated to president and general manager of the multi-million dollar corporation. On Sept. 3, 1973, he joined the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. In the ensuing years, he served as program director of the Central Milk Testing Laboratory, Dairy Commodity Leader, associate director of Milk Industry branch, associate director of Farm Products Quality branch and director of Dairy Inspection branch. Dr. Meiser served in every phase of the dairy industry — farming, education, research, processing and government — and filled hundreds of speaking engagements before civic and industry groups throughout Canada and the U.S. He is a life member of two National Agricultural Honor Societies, Central Pennsylvania Genealogical Pioneers and the Northumberland County Historical Society. In January 1986, he retired and devoted full time to his favorite hobby, genealogy. In the ensuing years, he and his late wife, Ann, published more than 50 books pertaining to individual family histories and cemetery records of Northumberland and surrounding counties. Copies of their publications number in the thousands and appear in every major genealogical library throughout the U.S. Surviving are his daughter, JoAnn Meiser Deans and her husband, John, and their children J.J. and his wife Michelle, and Patrick; a son, John Addison Meiser and his wife, Jane, and their children, Jennifer and David. http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=14752372&BRD=2311&PAG=461&dept_id=482258&rfi=6 +------------------------------------------------------------------------+ + As featured in the on-line version of The News Item. + Web Address: http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?brd=2311 +------------------------------------------------------------------------+ --WebTV-Mail-31591-112--

    3. Linda, I'd like to read that article about Samuel F. Wheary in the Mt. Carmel Daily News - how did you find it? I'd known he had a tobacco business, then later a motorcycle franchise, and still later a machine shop in an alley between Maple & Oak and between 3rd. & 4th Sts. He was quite mechanical and his name is in the Ford museum in Michigan for his work with autos. I'd heard he invented the rotary engine, but certainly didn't patent it, if that was true! Also, I remember years ago an article sent to my mother by an older aunt which was a reprint of a 1903 Mt. Carmel newspaper article showing a photo of my grandfather, the same Samuel Weary driving the very first automobile in Mt. Carmel - not his, he was just a driver we think. We had the article for many years, but it has been lost by this time - unfortunate none of us were interested in genealogy back then. Sam Weary was just a young man when he helped Edison with the Mt. Carmel lighting, just a worker, I'd be surprised if his name showed up anywhere connected with that endeavor. Sam Weary also was quite good at furniture making - all done in Mission Oak style. I have a plant stand he made right here in the room I'm in now. Unfortunately, the larger pieces he made, desk, buffet, dining table were sold when the Mt. Carmel house was disbanded almost sixty years ago. Many thanks for sharing this information with me. 2. There is an historical marker on Front Street in Sunbury. This is the text of that sign. First Electric Light First successful use of a three-wire electric lighting system was made July 4, 1883 in the City Hotel building in Sunbury. Thomas A Edison directed the work. The Edison Electric Illuminating Co. was at 4th and Vine Streets. Lee

    3. > So I wonder when Mt. Carmel had its street lights installed and > operating? Elida and interested others, According to: Souvenir Art Edition, The Mt. Carmel Daily News in the year 1896. "Mt. Carmel has had Electric Light since Jan 22, 1894. Mt.. Carmel has the distinction of being the first town in the world to be lighted exclusively by electricity. Up till the time the Electric lights were first turned on, Mt. Carmel streets were in darkness as there was no gas or other illumination of a public nature. The Edison Illuminating Co. of Mt. Carmel was incorporated November 17, 1883, with a paid up capital stock of $15,000. The plant was then located near the corner of Fourth and Maple streets, but in November , 1890,the capital was increased to $25,000 and the plant was moved to the present (1896) location at the foot of Oak St." The article lists officers but does not mention the name of Wheary in this article. Samuel F. Wheary article and picture recounting his success in retail tobacco, cigar, and confectionery business established about 1895. Joseph B. Young article and picture are on the same page detailing his drug store located at Oak and Second St. I have seen these names recounted here before. I hope this is of some interest and help. Linda

    3. http://www.northumberlandco.org/tourism.html This link says that Mt. Carmel was the first town in the world to have electric street lights. Sounds like my grandfather knew whereof he spoke. It mentions the lighting of the hotel in Sunbury 1883, renamed the "Edison Hotel". So I wonder when Mt. Carmel had its street lights installed and operating? My guess would be no earlier than 1888, when my grandfather was age 14. The story is that as a young man he worked with Thomas Edison doing the Mt. Carmel street lights. Interesting, too, that the Mt. Carmel power plant was at 4th and Maple Streets. I had an aunt who lived on the block of Maple between 3rd and 4th Sts., but I can't picture the corner with the power plant way back before 1940, but I was young. Take care, Elida of Dixie

    2. Hello, I have an article that relates to electric lights in Sunbury and in Shamokin. If you would like a copy send me your email addresses and I will send it. This was regarding Edison and my g.grandfather Hezekiah Floyd who worked with Edison, and learned about wireing electric lights and then Floyd and his son wired St. Edwards Church for electricity. It was supposedly the first Catholic Church in the world to be lighted by electricity. The article was in a newspaper called The Catholic Witness dated Aug.22, 1968. Names I am researching are Holshue/Reed/Rinard/Eisenhart/Keiper/Floyd/O'Gara in Pennsylvania. Diane Tesene

    3. I was born in Sunbury and raised nearby. Have been in Sunbury's Hotel Edison many times. The story they tell tourists is that this hotel is the first large commercially oriented building in the world that received electrical lighting. I never heard the story that Sunbury was the "first electric-lighted town," even though my home was in that area for fifty-some years. I wonder if the story of "whole-town" lighting might have grown by exaggeration from the early electrification of the Hotel Edison. If anyone can provide me a reference to an historical account of Sunbury city's electrical street lighting, I would appreciate it. Nelson R.
