    1. Re: [PANORTHU] Michael and Appolonia
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: mannandrolls Surnames: Schaeffer, Shaffer Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.northumberland/2132.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My wife is a decendent of Johannes Schaeffer, son of Michael Schaeffer. I have found a lot of confusion over Michael Schaeffer since there was another Michael Schaeffer, son of Johannes Schaeffer and Maria Eva Saab. This latter Michael married Maria Elisabeth Brosius 4 July 1777 in Northumberland County; therefore, they cannot be the parents of Johannes Schaeffer. Johannes Schaeffer, b. 6 Nov 1773 married Maria Margaretha Elisabetha Schneider around 1794 in Northumberland County. Johannes and Margaretha's daughter Eva b. 30 Sept. 1797 was sponsered in baptism by Michael and Appolonia Schaeffer. I have not had much luck on finding more information on Michael and Appolonia other than speculation that Appolonia was born Maria Appolonia Brosius. Johannes Schaeffer (Shaffer) and family moved to the wilderness of Armstrong County (now Clarion county), Redbank Township, about 1800. They made a journey back to Northumberland County in the summer of 1806. Two sons were baptized at Himmels Church that fall, Benjamin and Simon Peter. They then returned to Armstrong County (now Clarion County) where Johannes and wife Margaretha died in 1838 or 1840 of Typhoid fever. I have for children of Johannes and Margaretha Schaffer: Maria Sara, born 3 April 1795 in Northumberland County Eva, born 30 September 1797 in Northumberland County Johann Nicholaus, born 9 November 1799 in Northumberland County John (Johannes), born about 9 December 1800 unknown location and died 15 February 1873 near Shannonville, Clarion County Benjamin, born 7 August 1804 unknown location Simon Peter, born 11 October 1806 in Northumberland County and died 21 October 1876 in Shannondale (This is my wife's ancestor) Christina, born around 1808 in Redbank Township, Armstrong County Susanna, born around 1810 in Redbank Township, Armstrong County Solomon, born 31 January 1811 in Redbank Township, Clarion County Abraham, born 12 May 1812 in Redbank Township, Clarion County Catharine, born around 1815 in Redbank Township, Clarion County Adam, born around 1820 in Redbank Township, Clarion County and died in 1838 or 1840 of Typhoid fever in Redbank Township, Clarion County The Johann Andreas Schaeffer mentioned married Maria Magdalena Schneider, elder sister to Maria Margaretha Schneider above, in 1793 in Northumberland County; however, there is a reference to Andrew having died in 1835 in Mahanoy Township, Northumberland County. This may be incorrect as the same source also has Andrew being born 1763 the son of Johannes Schaeffer and Maria Eva Saab. As mentioned above their son Johann Michael Schaeffer married Maria Elisabeth Brosius in 1777. It is evident to me that there must be 2 separate families of Schaeffer haveing similar names that moved to Northumberland County between 1765 and 1778. What may also make it more confusing is that Johannes and Maria Eva Schaeffer's daughter Maria Magdalena married Johann George Peiffer. Anyone else who could help by sharing information on these families could help in untangling the confusion. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [PANORTHU] Madeira Mamore Expedition to Brazil, Metropolis Mercedita & Richmond
    2. Bob Moyer
    3. Hello everyone, I have finished indexing the names for a new database for the Madeira Mamore Expedition of 1878 which involved constructing a railroad in Brazil by US engineers, contractors and laborers. The names are mostly PA, NJ, NY, DE, MD, WV, KY and OH. My project started as a search for person named Philip BOWERS in my family tree who I finally found in one of the newspaper articles and my project since expanded into something much more. Since I had collected so much information I thought it might be a good time to share it with other researchers. The project consists of two web pages: 1) a source or reference page (bibliography) with links to where the names were found, and 2) the database of names to which it is linked You can access both at the web site below: http://web.rtmc.net/~bobmoyer/1878/sources.htm I you have a missing person from this time period you need to check the database, especially if they were from PA, NJ, NY, DE or MD. The names in the list are not currently found by searching the Internet or Rootsweb. Rootsweb support said the names will all eventually become indexed - indexing runs in two month cycles. Short Synopsis: The Disastrous American Expedition of 1878 that included the contractors P. & T. Collins (Col. George Earl Church) and the laborers who went to Brazil to build a railroad was also called the "The Railroad of Death" and a "railroad from no-place to no-where". It was estimated that a worker died for every sleeper that was laid in the jungle and the loss of workers was on a scale that rivaled the Panama Canal project. The purpose of this project is to create a database of names by transcribing newspaper accounts, books and other sources about the expedition. Careful attention has been given to separate these names from the later Farquar/Jekyll expedition of 1907-1912. Thousands of men from many countries lost their lives in both expeditions. I've read that many men kept diaries while working in Brazil and I have a few in my sources but I'm sure there are others. If you have anything to add I would welcome your contribution. Happy Hunting - please let me know if you find anything helpful. Sincerely, Bob Moyer Instructor, Ed2go - Genealogy Basics Researching the Pennsylvania names of Moyer, Rempp, Klug, Mattern, Magargal and BOWERS, the name that originally started this project.

She married William F. Eich, and is shown in the 1910 census living in Northumberland County. I can't find anything else about her, am wondering if Lucy is her given name or possibly a nickname. Please let me know if anyone has any info on the Mervine's living in that area. John Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I see too that there is a wife looks like it says Katha. So frank was his brother and Jan his nephew. Looks like he brought over the nephew and then came back for the wife That seems odd. I originally thought Jan was the brother Looking into family history especially when you lack info is hard. e-mail [email protected] Thanks for your help Monica Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
