My Grandfather's name was James Birch born 1891 Shamokin P.A. Parents-Joseph Birch born in Lancashire England, mother Hannah Birch nee Filer born in South Wales U.K. Joseph and Hannah married in Northumberland county in 1890 and returned to Wales around 1902. My grandad tried for many years to obtain a certificate from the States but with no success ( you're explation would i'm sure be the reason ) and of course it was in the days before the internet. He always said that he was born on board ship or on "American Waters " wheter this tale was true i've no idea and hence the hunt for the record of his birth. I can't imagine my great gran marrying in P.A. coming home to Wales and returning while heavily pregnant, but who knows. The Birch family attended the Church of England here so i guess they must have attended the Protesant church while living in Shamokin. Thank you for taking the trouble to try and help, it's very much appreciated. I'll leave my e mail address if that would make it any easier. Best wishes. Janet. Do you have a name and denomination for your grandfather? There would not have been a government issued birth certificate at that time, because most US states did not start issuing them until about 1920. The church should have recorded the birth/baptism. There were a number of Catholic churches whose members were split among various ethnic groups, so knowing his national origin would help. There were relatively fewer Protestant churches, particularly after the influx of immigrants from East Europe to work the coal mines. The Catholic churches dwindled in number after the Depression and their records have been consolidated and are maintained by the Mother Cabrini church. The names I sent you were the only named burials. The rest were unknown. You can see them on the web at www.findagrave.com. The baptism and marriage records for St. Edward's are maintained by the Diocese of Harrisburg. Here is a link tot heir site: http://www.hbgdiocese.org/Default.aspx?PageID=f33e16bc-601f-4eb0-83a1-f8eb0e71ad57. I used the online form and requested the church records for my Coal Township families. I was told death records are still kept locally, so you would need to contact St. Edward's for those. I have not done that yet for my families. Eileen Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. This case is getting more confusing each time information pops up and his children, my aunts, that are still alive, for some reason refuse to help. His death certificate doesn't list his parents at all and even his head stone lists his birth year as 1892. It seems that no one here really know much about him and really nothing about his life or family in PA except that he had 2 sisters and 1 brother, possible a twin. It's really hard getting more information when you know so little to begin with. Thanks again Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. But, I have a theory based on what I've seen. There appear to be 3 birth dates for him. 27 Feb 1884 (WWI Draft Registration) 28 Feb 1886 (WWII Draft Reistration) 29 Feb 1888 (Cournoyer Family Tree Public Member Tree Unsourced) Preview Name: Wilbert Ford Birth: 02-29-1888 (29 Feb 1888) - PA Death: 1943 - Southbridge, Massachusetts, USA Wilbert Ford Rose Marie Girard unknown unknown I did find a "William" Ford, born in Feb 1888, listed as "nephew" living with John and catharine HALL in Mount Carmel in 1900. There are also a set of twins, John and Alfred FORD, b. June 1885, in 1900 living in Mount Carmel listed as "boarders" with Joseph and Mary FORD. Looking at the 1880, there is a couple who does not show up in 1900 named John and Mary FORD with children, Joseph aged 10, Maria aged 5, Harriet aged 4, and Mary E aged 1. They live next door to Alfred FORD age 60. So, it may be possible that John and Mary are the parents of twins John and Alfred, and possibly of "William" or Wilbert who would have gone to live with relatives upon the demise of their parents. Have you looked for Wilbert's Death Certificate from MA in 1943? Just a theory... Greg Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
