Most churches have a friendly and informative voice mail message, but the one I got was a computer generated voice asking me to leave a message. I did verify that the number is current and correct, so I'll give it a day or two before following up. I'm not that familiar with Episcopal weekly religious practices, so they may only have someone at the church on Sundays. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Charles was my grt Gran's {Hannah Filer} father's brother. Elizabeth was his sister. To have an address and the actual dates of their deaths is wonderful. My grandfather James Birch and his parents left P.A> to return to Wales in 1902. I think i may apply for Aunt Agnes and uncle Charle's records as at least this would give me an idea of where the family were in Shamokin. The extra info you supplied is a bonus { Newport is in Wales not England } and thank you again for taking the trouble to look it up for me. Kind regards Janet. I have no further information on John. My source for this information is "Burial records for Northumberland Co. PA, Vol. 5" by Meiser. In his listings for Shamokin cemetery on page 264, he lists: Charles Rehrer 8/26/1845, Shamokin - 9/3/1942, son of Jacob J. and Sarah Kreigh Rehrer and his wife, Emily Reese, b 2/22/1869, Newport, England, died 7/28/1938, daughter of John and Elizabeth Filer Reese. The same information is verified in the listings of the Farrow Funeral Home Burials, 1878 - 1988, Pt. II, on page 739. Also on page 265 of Meiser's book, two children: Wlliam Rehrer Apr. 1, 1898 - May 10, 1898 unamed infant Rehrer Oct. 13, 1894 - Oct 16, 1894. PA Birth Registrations were kept at the county level from 1893 to 1905, after which they are kept by the State. This means that a record might be found for Agnes and Charles. James would have been permitted to file a delayed registration of birth after 1940 in the county of his birth with supporting documentation and affadavits from a relative or non-relatives present at his birth. Pennsylvania required birth certificates be kept by the counties starting in 1893, then began keeping them by the state in 1906. Prior to 1893, church records and family Bibles are the main sources. Some would say that PA makes getting birth certificates sufficiently difficult that other means are still the best source. ;>) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have been looking into baptismal records in my area of Michigan. I have called several times to get information but being they are to old to touch them. (Catholic church) for around 1880 time frame. What I found?when I called the Diocese that covers our area they had the old ones microfilmed. I am going next week to look at the microfilm. This may be another source to look. Do you have a name and denomination for your grandfather? There would not have been a government issued birth certificate at that time, because most US states did not start issuing them until about 1920. The church should have recorded the birth/baptism. There were a number of Catholic churches whose members were split among various ethnic groups, so knowing h is national origin would help. There were relatively fewer Protestant churches, particularly after the influx of immigrants from East Europe to work the coal mines. The Catholic churches dwindled in number after the Depression and their records have been consolidated and are maintained by the Mother Cabrini church. My Grandfather's name was James Birch born 1891 Shamokin P.A. Parents-Joseph Birch born in Lancashire England, mother Hannah Birch nee Filer born in South Wales U.K. Joseph and Hannah married in Northumberland county in 1890 and returned to Wales around 1902. My grandad tried for many years to obtain a certificate from the States but with no success ( you're explation would i'm sure be the reason ) and of course it was in the days before the internet. He always said that he was born on board ship or on "American Waters " wheter this tale was true i've no idea and hence the hunt for the record of his birth. I can't imagine my great gran marrying in P.A. coming home to Wales and returning while heavily pregnant, but who knows. The Birch family attended the Church of England here so i guess they must have attended the Protesant church while living in Shamokin. Thank you for taking the trouble to try and help, it's very much appreciated. I'll leave my e mail address if that would make it any easier. Best wishes. Janet. They indicated they married about 1890 and that she had had 4 children, three of whom were still living in 1900. They were James (born August 1891 in PA); Agnes E. (born April 1893 in PA); and Charles (born October 1896 in PA). They lived at 910 Sunbury Street in Shamokin and Jospeh worked as a coal miner. Joseph was a naturalized citizen by 1900. I found an immigration record for Hannah that shows she arrived in Philadelphia on March 24, 1888 aboard the British Prince out of Liverpool. She was traveling with her probable brother George and sister Eliza. George was living in Shamokin in 1900 and was single living in his sister's house. Eliza (Elizabeth) was apparently a widow, with the last name Ruse. I'll let you know if we find anything more. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this l ist. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
