The Express Oct. 8, 1963 Asher ABEL Sr., Bangor Banker, Is Dead at 82, Borough Treasurer 24 Years; Former School Teacher Asher G. ABEL Sr., Bangor Banker and former school teacher, died this morning in St. Luke's Hospital, Fountain Hill, where he was admitted two weeks ago. He was 82. His home was at 304 Broadway, Bangor. Mr. ABEL was honorary chairman of the board of the First National Bank, Bangor, since 1962 when he retired as president. He became affiliated with the bank in 1913. He started as a teller and was promoted to the offices of cashier, vice president and in 1948 was named president. Before that he taught school in Bangor Public Schools form 1905 to 1913 and formerly taught at Cross Roads School, Bitz School, and a New Jersey school. Born in Plainfield Township, he was a son of the late Emilious and Irene MILLER ABEL. He lived in the Bangor area all his life. He served as treasurer of Bangor Borough for 24 years and at one tome was a Third Ward councilman. He was past president of North! ampton County Bankers Association and was one of the original members of the Blue Ridge Clearing House Association. He was one of the reorganizers of the First National Bank. In 1959 he was the recipient of the Bangor Exchange Club's Golden Deed Award. Mr. ABEL was a charter member of the former dean of directors and treasurer of the Slate Belt Building & Loan Associaton. He served as president of the Bangor Red Cross for many years. He was a member of the Trinity Evangelical Church and served as treasurer of the church more than 40 years. He also was a member of the church council many years. He was a member and past worshipful master of Pen Argyl Lodge 594, F&AM. He also was a member of Bangor Chapter, Royal Arch Masons; Hugh DePayens Commandery, Knights Templar, Easton; Rajah Temple, Reading; Lehigh Valley Joshua Association of Free Masonary, Bangor Lodge, BPOE; Easton Aerie III, Fraternal Order of Eagles; Blue Mountain Rod and Gun Club and the Bangor Library Board. Survi! vors include his widow, the former Lucy UHLER; a son, Asher G. Jr., Bsngor R.D.; a sister, Mrs Stewart SHOOK, Bangor R.D., and a grandson. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Hough Home for Funerals, Bangor. Jersey Man Hurt In Rt. 191 Crash --- Anthony DESOLA, 55 of 634 Burkley Ave., Orange, N.J. was injured last night when his car struck a utility pole along route 191 near the Rosteo Rod and Gun Club in North Bangor. DESOLA was admitted to Northampton Hospital with face cuts and chest injuries. He was listed in satisfactory condition today. Police said the northbound car went out of comtrol on a curve. It was damaged badly and was towed from the scene. Burglars Get Tires, Wheels Worth $300 -- Burglars took tires and wheels valued at about $300 from the P.R. HENDERSON garage, 136 S. Third St., Easton, sometime last night or early today. Easton police said four new tires and wheels were taken from the trunks of new cars. Six new tires were taken from a storage room and two used tires from customers cars. The thieves entered by forcing the padlock on the front over-head door. They left by forcing open a rear door. The theft was discovered at 7 a.m. today. Detective Sgt. Chester PENSYYL is investigating. Phony Collectors Loot Phila. Home Philadelphia (UPI) -- Two men posing as collectors for charity forced their way into a Germantown home Monday night, bound a 17 year old boy and ransacked the house of more than $700 in cash and jewelry. Mark PRINCE told police the men pointed guns at him when he answered the doorbell. One of the men stood guard over him while the other went through the house. PRINCE mother was visiting friends at the time. Data on Arthritis Drive to be Distributed here Mrs. Bertha FRIEDMAN, Easton director of the Arthritis and Rheumatism foundation drive, has announced that she will be at the 25th Street Shopping Center tomorrow from 12 noon to 2 p.m. to register all persons who wish to receive free literature on these diseases.
