ABEL, 25, of Delabole, Pen Argyl R.D.1, was killed earlier today when his car skidded sideways into the path of a Martz bus near the intersection of routes 12 and 115 Saylorsburg. It was the second fatal accident in the Lehigh Valley in 24 hours. Kathy Louise EICHELBERGER, 10 month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William EICHELBERGER, of 1613 Allen St., Allentown, was fatally injuried early yesterday in a one-car crash in Lehighton. State police from Stroudaburg said ABEL died instantly when he was thrown out of his car at the point of impact. He lay in the middle of the road, where he was pronounced dead by Dr. Robert DREHER, Wind Gap. The car caught fire and burned at the side of the road. Monroe County Cororner Daniel G. WARNER said death was caused by multiple internel injuries. WARNER signed a certificate! of accidental death. The cororner released the body to the William Kresge Funeral Home, Brodheadsville. It later eas transferred to the Pullis Funeral Home, Pen Argyl. The collision occurred at 2:50 a.m. on route 12 near Lilly Pond Lodge, Saylorsburg. Three hours later and a few hundred yards from the scene of the first crash two men were injured when their car was in collision with a wrecker which had arrived to salvage the damaged bus. It was raining at the time of the first collision. State police said ABEL, alone in his car, was traveling west on Route 12. A Martz bus operated by John O'MAHEN, 41, Wilkes-Barre, was going east. O'MAHEN told police that he was entering a long, gradual curve in the road opposite Lilly Pond Lodge when he saw a car skidding sideways toward him. Troopers said the car slammed into the front of the bus and then veered off to the sode of the road and burned. In addition to the driver, the bus carried six passengers who were on their way from Phi! ladelphia to Scranton. None of them were injuried. Troopers said the front of the bus was heavily damaged. The impact shattered the windshield and sprayed the interior of the vehicle with tiny fragments fo glass. Damage to the bus was estimated at $2,000. The car a 1947 model was demolished. Bus passengers were transferred to another vehicle. Troopers said it is not likely the O'MAHEN will be charged with involuntary manslaughter. They postponed a final decision, however, until a conference with the Monroe County Cororner. Volunteers of the Blue Ridge Hook and Ladder Co., Saylorsburg, stood by while the ABEL car burned. The vehicle was filled with flames when the firemen arrived. The Wind Gap ambulance was called to the scene. Its crew stood by until ABEL had been pronounced dead by Dr. DREBER. At 6 a.m., troopers and bu drivers were waiting in front of Lilly Pond Lodge for the arrival of the wrecker. They heard the squeal of tires and a crash at the intersection of Routes 1! 2 and 115. Ath the intersection they found that a new car driven by James A. JOHNSON, 31, Jamaice N.Y., had struck and passed underneath the left rear of the wrecker. The accident happened when the wrecker, traveling south on Route 115 attempted to turn left and proceed to the scene of the first accident. JOHNSON, following some distance behind the heavier vehicle, was unable to stop when he came over the crest of a small hill and saw the wrecker turning left. The Wind Gap ambulance was summoned again. It took JOHNSON and a passenger, Vincent DRAPIEWSKI, Wilkes-Barrem to Monroe County General Hospital, East Stroudsburg. The two men were released after treatment for multiple cuts and bruises.Total damage in the second accident was estimated at $1,250, JOHNSON will be charged with reckless driving.
