    3. James M. Bensley, was born Sept 13, 1836, in Lehman township. Israel Bensley, his great-grandfather, is thought to have been a Scotsman by birth. During the Rev war he served as a soldier in the British army, and was captured by the American forces at the battle of Trenton. He came to PA in an early day, in company of a Scotsman named Stewart, who was taken prisorner wih him, and they settled near Bushkill, but as that place is so near the line between Monroe and Pike counties it is not definitely known which county he made his home. He was a tax-payer in Pike county, however in 1804 and 1814, and records show that he settled in Lehman township before the birth of our subject's father in 1810. Several of the Stewart;s great-grandchildren reside in the neighborhoold at the present time. Adam Bensley, grandfather, was born in Smithfield township, Monroe Co., he moved to Leham township, Pike Co. He married Anna Impson of Pike county. Children, Israel, never married, Sarah who married Jacob Gagger, Catharine who married Adam Von Gordeon, Daniel, never married, Elizabeth who maried Aaron Bergstresser,Hannah married Joseph C. Latimore, Mary A., who married John Bergstreser, Elsaa, married Benjamin F. Fralick, Jane married Adam Davis, Susan married Burris Ward, and John who married Mary Davis. Jacob Bensley, father, born Sept 30, 1810, in Pike Co., his wife, Sally Anne (Clifford), a native of Pike Co., children; Oliver, Elizabeth, J. Madison, Charles, Ryma and Jane, twins, Maria, Solomon, Joseph, Albert, John S., William, Robert P., Martha, Franklin, and Jacob. James S., married Nov 18, 1855 to Maria Gariss. Mrs. Bensley was born Feb. 20, 1839 in Lehman township. Her paternal grandfather, Samuel Gariss, native of Bethlehem, PA, was a miller at Flatbrookville, Sussex Co., NJ. He married Mary Smith of NJ, d/o of Philip Smith, a native of NJ. Philip Gariss, father of Mrs. Bensley, was born in NJ. He died at Newton, NJ in Oct. 1894, he was married to Elizabeth Arnst, whe was born in Lehman township, Pike County, PA William Arnst, Mrs. Bensley's maternal grandfather was born in Germany, came to America, making his home in Monroe Co. He married Catharine Ace of Smithfield township. Children; Elizabeth, married ___ Gariss, Mason D., Lydia, George and Barbara. Hickok, Asa, W., a native of NY, born in Elmira, Jan 23, 1844, s/o Asa and Mary A. (Glynes), both natives of PA., The father was born May 5, 1811 and died in Clayton, Mich., in Dec, 1887. Asa W. Hickok married Feb. 11, 1868 to Rebecca Kunkle, she was born in Kunkletown, Monroe Co., Feb. 11, 1847, d/o John and Sarah (Spragle) Kunkle, natives of Monroe Co. They made their home there until 1851 when they moved to Warren Co., NJ and 7 years later moved to Rush township, Sus.Co. Mrs. Hickoc's paternal grandparents were John and Rebecca (Huston) Kunkle of Monroe County, and her maternal grandparents were Jaocb S. and Catharine (Myres) Spragle, of Monroe County. Huston Family of Monroe Co., Col. Huston, was a well know resident of Stroud township, where he died Feb 1861 when he was between 60 to 70 years of age. He married Anna C. Shafer, and they had children; Jacob, Samuel who was the first to cross the plains to CA., later he settled in Iowa, Robert, who died in Strousburg, Joseph of Iowa, Frank, of CA when last heard from, Eliza, married ____Frantz, Rachel who married ____Marvin of NJ and they lived in Monroe Co., Mary who married ___"Kemerer", Ellen, died unmarried, Lavina, Jeanette, who died in the West, Tacy Ann, who married Chauncey Walter and the moved to Idaho in 1865 but moved to S. Dakota. John Walter, the father of Mrs. Fetherman, was born at Bushkill, Aug 17, 1812 and died Feb. 22, 1886. He married Lavina Huston, born 1821 and died in 1897. Children; Anne E., now Mrs. Fetherman, Charles of Monroe Co., Emma married ___Bossard and settled near Scranton, Ellem, the wife of Sheriff Learn of Monroe County, Mary, married Henry Warner, of Bangor, Pa and Nettie and Minnie died in childhood. John Fetherman, was born June 12, 1836, in Hamilton township. On Feb. 1, 1859 he married Anne E. Walter, Mrs. Fetherman, was born in Stroudsburg, July 25, 1841. Member of the Reformed Church. Her great-grandfather, Mathais Shafer, native of Germany, settled in Northampton Co., at a very early date, and her great-grandfather, Jacob Walter, and her grandfather Huston were both born there. The former settled near Bushkill, Monroe county about the time of the sepeartion of the counties, ad he died near Stroudsburg at the age of 84.
