Hunter is of Scotch-Irish parentage. Adam Hunter, his grandfather, resided near Londonderry, Ireland. His wife, a Miss Wray, of Glasgow, Scotland, was the mother of one son, Thomas, and a daughter, Martha who became the wife of Andrew Scanlan. Thomas a nattive of Ireland, emigrated to the US in 1842, settling first at Phila. and later Delaware County, PA., he married Henriette, d/o Joseph Schwend, a military engineer and staff officer in the French army under Napoleon, who afterward emigrated to America and was employed by the Raritian Canal. The surviving children of this marriage are Joseph W., Sarah W., who married Robert T. Love, Martha, Mary A., Rebecca, and Henrietta. Joseph W., was born 23 July 1858, in Haverford township, Delaware County He later moved to Lower Merion township, Montgomery Co. In 1878 he married Kate Gentry of Phila. No children mentioned. Berks County History-Hunter Family The Hunter family, which is one of the oldest in Oley township, was founded by Nicholas and Anthony Iager, brothers whose name was later changed by legisation to Hunter. They emigrated in 1738 from the Palatinate, and MARTIN DE TURCK is descended from both, Nicholas being the ancestor of his grandfather, Daniel V.R. Hunter, and Anthony the ancestor of his grandmother, Mary Hunter, born Kemp, who was a grandfather of Daniel Hunter, a colonel in the Rev. army. Col. Daniel Hunter was the only son of Anthony Hunter. De Walt Kemp, the progenitor of this branch of the Kemp family, emigrated from Germany about 1720. Isaac DeTurck, or as then known DeTurk, who was the first to take out land patents in Oley township in171, and was the progenitor of the DeTurck family in this section of the State. He was a descendant of the French Huguenots. Martin Yoder DeTurck, grandfather to MARTIN D. HUNTER, after whom he was named, was a great-great-grandson of Isaac DeTurck and was married to Rachal Levan, a descendant of Abraham LeVan, who was born in 1698., and was one of the of the early settlers of Olney township, being also a desendant of the Huguenots. Martin D. Hunter had one brother and two sisters; Dr. Albert Hunter, of Savanna, IL, Mrs. Annie D. Hechler, and Mrs. Mary D. Manwiller, of Stony Creek Hills Martin D., married in 1890 to Sarah B. Hill, d/o John Y. and Angelina (Breidegam) Hill. Children; Edna M., Louis H., and Ellis D. York County-Gilbert/Hunter John Gilbert, who lived in the west of Cornwall, England, whence, became a Quaker, he was banished in 1663. For some time he was imprisoned in Lancaster jail, and then with others of his faith emigrated to America. John Gilbert settled near Perkasie, Bucks county. He brought his wife Florence, and his two sons, Joseph, the latter being about 7 or 8 years old: and after landing in America another son, Joshua was born Joseph Gilbert married Rachal Loegy of Abington or Lower Dublin and settled on the tract of land left him by his father, where he died Aug. 8, 1765, aged 90. After bearing him several children his first wife died, and he married 2nd to Sarah James. Benjamin Gilbert, son of Joseph, was born in 1711, and in June, 1731 he married Sarah. d/o Benjamin Mason. They had 8 children. Jesse Gilbert, son of Benjamin, married SArah Harding and settled in Bird in Hand, Lancaster county. Children; Amos, married Sarah Kirk, and died in Lancaster, Betsey died in infancy, Benjamin, died in Colerain, Lancaster county, he married Hannah Rakestraw, Sarah, married Henry Bushong, of Lancaster county, John died in Lancaster, Caroline died at 64, in Chester county. Joshus Gilbert, was born 1801, at Bird in Hand, Lancaster county. in 1824 he married Elizabeth Valentine, d/o John and Mary (Taylor) Valentine. Children; Lydia, Thomas, and Anne, all died in infancy, Mary who married John Owen, of Manayunk, Jesse, Sarah who married Benjamin Hagie. Jesse Gilbert, born in Bart twp., Lancaster, Aug 22, 1834, married Anna Hunter, who was born in Bart twp., June 2, 1835. Ann (Hunter) Gilbert's parents were Alexander and Mary (Park) Hunter, the former was a native of Ireland, came to America as a boy. Mrs. Hunter was reared in Chester county. Anna (Hunter) Gilbert had 4 brothers in the Civil war; George, Joseph, a Sgt of Co C. 5th PA Cav., John A., 7th PA, James McCammon Hunter of Clarion, PA, Co I. 107th P.V.I. Hunter-Rev. War-pensions listing PA only Benjamin, NY and PA Lines,enlisted at Fort Montgomery, NY and later at Phila., applied in Ohio George wife Phebe, Cont. Line (PA). soldier married Phebe Bryant 28 Dec 1786, she was born 16 Feb 1769. children shown; Mary Ann, George Heriot, Priestly, Peggy, Phobe, Debby, William Wallace. Soldier died in New Orleans, LA John, PA Line, soldier was born at Oley township, Berks county and he lived in Reading, he applied at Oley, age 74 John,PA Line a son David Hunter was adm'r of widow estate. John was born at New Castle, DE., Dec 2, 1755, he lived in Cumberland Co., PA at enlistment. John, wife Martha, PA Line Patrick, VA and PA Line, soldier was born 1760 in the north of Ireland, lived in VA at enlistment.
