Gearhart-Northumberland County. I. Capt. Jacob Gearhart, great-grandfather, was born in Strasburg, then France, now Germany, in 1735. He came to America in 1754, settling in Hunterdon County, NJ. He married in NJ to Katherine Kline. He enlisted in the Rev. war, becoming a Sgt. of the 2nd Regt. of Vols. of Hunterdon, soon promoted to ensign and then to Capt. In 1776, when Washington crossed the Delaware to attack the Hessian troups then emcamped at Treton, Capt. Gearhart was detailed with Capt. Van Tenye to take charge of the boats with orders to destroy them should the expedition prove a failure. Capt. Gearhart took part in the Battle of Brandywine. In 1790 Capt. Gearhart, with his wife and family, left the old homestead in Hunterdon, and journeyed by means of horses and wagons into central PA., encountering many hardships on the way. Upon reaching a point near a spring in what is now Gearhart Township, Northumberland county. His family consisted of 11 children; (1). Jacob, born 1763, died at age 78, married Margaret Runkill, and they had (John who was born 1789 and married Sophia Brown and they had; Jacob, 1818, Sarah, 1821, Margaret, 1823, and married I.H. Torrance, Mary born 1825, Henry T., 1829, Jesse, 1833). (2). Herman, 1765. (3) William, 1766-1854, married Sarah Maclay. (4). George married Achie Runyan by whom he had children; (Bonham, Benjamin, Eliza, and Rebecca, by his 2nd wife (Phoebe Lutt) he had children; Alice, George, and Herman). 5. John born in 1771, died in 1858 and they had 8 children ((a).Annie E., who married Wislon Metter and they had children; Sarah, who married ___Hoffman, Susan M., who married Hugh Vastine, Spencer C., married Anna Brandon, and Anne; (b). Tunis who moved to Iowa, (c) Jacob who moved to Ohio, (d). Willliam, (e) John, (f) Sarah, (g) Catharine, (h)Elizabeth). (6). Benjamin, (7). Elizabeth who married Jacob Depew, (8) Margaret, who married John Gulick. (9) Kate who married Asa Moore. (10) Charles who married Sarah Ephland and they had (a. Charles Perry, 1818, married in 1850 to Agnes Blue, daughter of Isaiah and Agnes Blue. They had 6 children. (11). Isaac who lived in Ohio. Herman Gearhart son of Capt. Jacob, born 1765, died aged 81. He married Abigail Baylor and the were the parents of the following, Mary who married Henry Yorks and had (Clinton, Amanda, Ellen, who married David Unger): George, who lived in Ohio and had 2 sons and 2 daughters; Margaret who married Jonas Wolf and had (Donald, Gearhart, Willington, and three daughters); Jacob, never married; Hannah who lived at Riverside (in 1910) aged 89; Peter Gearhart, son of Herman, married Celestia Koup, and they had children; George, Gertrude, Mrs. Charles Chalfont ; Lillian, who married Dr. Nelson Smith. John Gearhart, 5th son of Capt. Jacob, married Anna Cool of NJ and moved to PA., about 1790 with his parents to what is now Riverside. Mr and Mrs. John Gearhart were the parents of, Anne E., Jacob, Tunis, William, John, Sara, Catherine and Elizabeth. Anne E. married Wilson Mettler, and they were the parents of Mrs. Susan (Mettler) Vastine. William, son of Capt. Jacob, married Sarah, and they had a son John. John Gearhart, married Martha Martin, and they were parents of one son, Wilson M., who married Jane Beaver, d/o Jesse of Danville and they had 3 children; and one daughter, Sarah, who married Alfred Sober Charles Gearhart, son of Capt. Jacob, married Sarah Ephland. children 1. Charles Perry, married Agnes Blue, d/o Isaiah and Agnes (Childs) Blue, and granddaughter of Michael Blue, a soldier of the Rev. They had 6 children, Arthur Clarence; Amanda, who married S. M. Obendofer; Edith who married Phillip Mettler, and they had, Charles G., US Army, Agnes who married John Smith, Edith, Alice, John, Catharine, Mary Alice, the wife of E.M. Eckman, Gertrude G., the wife of G.H. Sonneborn, Charles P., 2. Samantha married Thomas Jaminson and they had, Helen, unmarried, Charles who married 1st ____Lyon, by whom he had 3 children, Nellie who marrie Harry Billmeyer, and had one daughter, Martha, Thomas, who married Elsie Kardishy, and Loue who married V.V. Hidaker; 2nd Elisabeth Laubach 3. Arthur, his wife Lucy __, children; Arthur, Anna, William who married Lena Herman, and Sarah who married Samuel Detwiller, and had 2 children, Lucy and Clara . John Gearhart, son of Capt. Jacob, married Anne Cool, of NJ.. children; Anne E., who married Wilson Mellter who was born 1813, s/o Philip and Susan (Carter) Mettler, they had four children, Sarah Elizabeth, married a Hoffman, Susan M., who married Hugh Vastine, Spencer and Alma ; Tunis; William Cool; Jacob and John.
