Westmoreland County History Gongaware I. Michael, came from Germany II. Michael, son the immigrant ancestor, was born in Northampton Co, in 1730. In early life he moved to Westmoreland Co. He was a clockmaker by trade, He died Oct 26, 1826, aged 96, and his wife Catharine, died March 22, 1829. III John, son of Michael and Catharine, was born near Harrold Church, he married Margaret Kepple. Children; Jacob married ___ Brinker, Joseph, Elizabeth, died unmarried, Mary married Tobias Painter, Catharine married ____ Klingensmith IV Joseph Gangaware, 2nd son of John and Margaret Kepple, was born about 1810. He married his cousin, Lydia Gongaware, d/o Philip and Margaretta (Miller). Children; Sarah born 1837, married Simon Long, issue ( Lydia Catharine, wife of Daniel Shrader, and John F.V., married Pearl Weaver). After the death of Simon Long, his widow married Reuben N. Miller. Lewis, born Sept 9, 1839. Amos John, born 1841, died about age 33, unmarried. Maria, the wife of James Stairs. V. Lewis, eldest son of Joseph and Lydia (Gongaware) Gongaware, born Sept 9, 1839. Member of the Lutheran Church. He married in 1864 to Louisa Miller, d/o George and Catharine (Blyholder) Miller. issue, Lydia A. born 1865 married James Cochrane, of Greensburg, Elizabeth, born 1867, married Janes Smail, of Greensburg, Rose, born 1870, married E. L. Blair, of Wilkinsburg, Emma Louise, born 1872, married A. H. Plough of Greensburg, John Joseph Little, born 1875, unmarried, Mary T., born 1877, married William J. Baughman, of Greensburg, Lulu R., born 1884, unmarried. I. Michael, ancestor II Philip G., son of Michael and Catharie, was born 1760, died Jan 18, 1829. He married Margaret Miller, d/o John Peter and Catharine Miller. She died in 1823, aged 57. Children; Margaret, Jacob, John, Elizabeth, Catharine, Jonas, Hannah, Peter, Lydia, and Sarah. III Peter, son of Philip and Margaretta (Miller) was born Nov 3, 1796, died March 17, 1879. He married Mary Naley, d/o Frederick Naley. Children; A daughter died as a baby, John P., married Catharine Baughman, Margaret, married Peter Lenhart, Philip P., Frederick, married Solome Butterfield, Jacob married Mary J. Steiner, Sarah, married Josiah Berlin, and after his death, R. S. Robinson, Catharine, married W.N. Thompson, and Michael died young. Jonas, son of Philip G. and Margaretta (Miller) he married Christina Naley, d/o Frederick. Children; Elizabeth Jane, married Henry Croushore, Mary, married Daniel Gress, Margaret, married William Armburst, Sarah, married Albert Kifer, Philip, married Hetie Eisaman, Peter, Jonas, married Amanda Erret, Lydia married Rev. Myers and they lived in Baltimore, Lebbius, married Lavina Eisman. Jacob, son of Philip G., and Margaretta (Miller), born Sept 1799, he married 1st to Elizabeth Whitehead, d/o Stoffel and Susan, children; John, Margaret married Solomon Altman, Eliza, married Joseph Myers, Lewis married 1st Mattie Alshouse, 2nd Emma Aber, Jonas married Sarah Alhouse. Jacob Gongaware married 2nd to Annie Stiener, nee Whitehead, sister of his 1st wife. Philip P., son of Peter and Mary (Naley) born Feb 21, 1829. In Nov 1850 he married Rachel Jane Whitehead, d/o Peter and Barbara (Highberger) and sister of Peter Whitehead. She died Sept 17, 1893 without issue. On Nov 26, 1894 he married Mary Ellen Henry, d/o Frederick and Lydia (Gross) Henry of West Jeanette. Peter, son of Jonas and Christina (Naley), he married Margaret Kunkle, d/o John and Sarah (Baughman) Kunkle, of North Huntington. Issue; Sarah married 1st Albert Alshouse, 2nd to Daniel McQuade, Eliza Jane, married J. W. Rowe, Jeremiah, Hezekiah, Obadiah, married Anne ___ and they lived in Canada, Samuel Logan, married ____ Parks, Mary Alice, married William Whitehead, lived in CO., Hatty, married Alexander Kistle and they lived in Co. John, s/o Jacob and Elizabeth (Whitehead). On June 6 1850 he married Rebecca Ann Ridinger, d/o of Joseph and Margaret (Chester). They moved in Indianapolis, and while on the trip back home, he fell dead at the small town of Penlinger, IN, March 23, 1855. She married 2ndto John Anderson and had 6 children, and after the death of Mr. Anderson, she married 3rd to Finley Shaner. Best Wishes, Geri
