lancaster examiner aug 25, 1831 married at new holland, by rev. j. w. richards on the 4th, james burkheiser to miss catharine griffiths, of chester co. feb. 28, 1839, on 3 jan. by rev. john wallace, of pequea, christian berkhyser to sarah ann church, both of leacock twp. laws of pa. 1816-17, elections. st. clair twp. bedford co.., will vote of john berkhimer's bensley, james m., of pike county, civil war vet.. he was born sept. 13. 1836, in lehman twp. israel bensley, great-grandfather, is thought to have been a scotsman by birth. during the rev. he served in the british army, and was captured by the americans, at the battle of trenton. he came to pa.l at an early day, in company of a scotsman named stewart, who was also taken prisoner with him, and they settled in bushkill, but as that plac is so near to the line between monroe and pike counties it is not definitely known in which county he first made his home. he was a tax-payer in pike co., in 1804-1814. several of stewart's great-grandchildren reside in the neihborhood at the present tine (1900) adam bensley, grandfather, was born in smithfield twp., monroe co. he moved to lehman two, pike co. he married anna impson, of pike co., and both in delaware twp, he in 1857. children; israel, deceased, never married, jacob, father of james m., sarah, w/o jacob gagger, catharine, w/o adam van gorden, daniel, of deleware twp., never married, elisabeth, w/o aaron bergstresser, hannah, w/o joseph latimore, mary a., w;/o john bergstreser, elsa,, w/o benjamin f. fralick, jane, w/o adam davis, susan, w/o burris ward and john who married mary davis.
