Where does one find out bounty land for a 1812 soldier? My gr3 - Craton WILLIAMS, was War of 1812 in S Carolina, his pension papers #21780, which I have copies of, show he was given bounty land of 160 acres with a Cert #114150. How can I find out where he staked claim to this 160 acres? Was there a designated area where the soldiers were to claim land? He lived in and around Kershaw Co SC after the War, had enlisted at Camden SC; died there near the county line of Richland Co., SC in 1878. I don't know if the land he was living on was his 'bounty land' or not. He seemed to be renting in some of the Census, as he was in Fairfield Co SC, then Lancaster Co SC on one and then Kershaw on another. I wondered if the War Dept kept track of bounty land? Or should I be looking in the county court house 'wherever' he staked out his claim? - which could be several counties, in his case! I found one deed record where he had 106 acres in Lancaster Co SC near the Catawba River in 1826. But never the 180 acres in his certificate. Then in 1833 he took out a mortgage for 120 acres in Fairfield county SC. I don't know where to look for this....... Thanks for any tips........where to write, etc...... My cousin has been writing to various places and getting a runaround! Diana
