Dear Jane, The Female Seminary in Bethlehem was founded by the Moravians in 1749 as the "Seminary for Young Ladies." It was known as "Fem Sem" for generations of Bethlehemites. In 1913 courses were added to bring the institution top the level of college study and a new charter granted as the "Moravian Seminary and College for Women at Bethlehem, PA." In 1953 the institution merged with Moravian College. Moravian College continues today as a fine private liberal arts college, "A Small National Treasure."
