Thanks to Penny, Cindy, and the recent information from Leslie Hoffman, the "bits 'n pieces" on the children of Owen Milton Keim and Catherine R. Warner are beginning to make some sense. The mystery is Jennie C. Keim. From the census records Jennie C. was b.~1874. Leslie did not find Jennie C's christening in the St. Thomas Church records that she trancscribed. We do not know when Owen and Catherine were married from the St. Thomas Church records. The guess is 1873. We know of their son Melvin who was b. 2/17/1874 bp. 3/29/1874 and died ? bfr. the 1880 census. His dod was not included in the info. Leslie transcribed. If Jennie was Melvin's twin, she would have been christened on the same date, true? So, it is likely that she was b. bfr. 6/1873. This assumes that Melvin was a 9 month gestation, if he was a "premie", Jennie could have been b. later in 1873. Any flaws in this logic? In the 1880 census Jenny C., age 6, is living with Catherine's parents, Charles Warner & Catherine (Engler) in western Bethlehem (pg.312). In the 1890 census substitute she is Jennie Kleine in western Bethlehem. The census substitute sorts by surname, and I can not tell who she was living with. However, she and the Warner's are in western Bethlehem, while Owen & Catherine are in the twnshp. Why did she live with her grandparents and not with her parents? On January 7, 1893 Jennie C. Keim married George W. Hoffman (s/o DeWitt Hoffman & Emma E ?); St. Thomas records. On 4/27/1898 their daughter, Emily F. was born in Bethlehem. I am not aware of their having had any other children. I have not yet found Jennie and George in the 1900 or 1910 census. In April of 1914, Mrs. Jennie Hoffman is living in Bethlehem, and listed as a surviving daughter of Owen in his obit. Note: The other married daughters of Owen are listed as Mrs. Husband's first name and Husband's surname. Did Jennie divorce George, or is this just an oddity? ( I believe that widows continued to be Mrs. His name; see Emily Post and Judith Martin.) Neither Jennie nor George are in the Ancestry.com index for 1920 Northampton Co., PA. Had they died? Are they in the Genealogy.com or Heritage index for 1920? Emily went on to marry Edward F. Lane(1897-1980)on an unknown date, stayed in the area all of her life, and d. 2/11/1990 in Allentown. If they had children, they did not survive Emily; thank you to Penny & Cindy for the cite to the obit in the 2/13/1990 Morning Call. Any additional information or thoughts on where to search next would be appreciated. J.R. Maxwell Delaware Co., OH
Hi, This is a tidbit I picked up last week when I was researching in Easton. You may already have it, but it could refer to the death of Melvin, below: The Easton Cemetery records this entry: WARNER, Owen K's infant April 18, 1879 plot D-262 Even though it's indexed to Warner, I'll bet you it refers to Owen Keim. This fecund couple had so many children, it's hard to keep them all straight. Have you established any twins among them? The numbers of single births are staggering, otherwise. Regarding Jennie C., my guess is that she could have been illegitimate, fathered by someone other than Owen. That frequently was the case with an "oldest" child who would end up being raised by the mother's parents. But another explanation is that older people needed helpers and daughters were usually offered up to older relatives. In my experience, the daughter "adopted" out has been the second daughter while the oldest would be kept at home to help her mother.
