The paternal grandfather of Joseph D. was Joseph Schmale, who when a young man left Germany and came to America with his two brothers. Joseph settled in Eldred township. Here William Schmale was born, the grandfather of Joseph D., who married Barbara "Seilfece"His son, David, father of Joseph D., was born 1818 he married Barbara Serfass, of Polk township. David Schmale died March 16, 1866 aged 47. His wife died in 1892. Both are buried at the Kunkeltown church cemetery. Children; David , Joseph D., Charles, Elizabeth, wife of Peter "Trable", Paul of Eldred, Reuben of Northampton Co., Adam of Luzerne Co,Henry, Nathan, Thomas of Clearfield Co. Joseph D., was born Nov 11, 1844. On March 26, 1866 he married Elizabeth Serfass, who was born Jan 22, 1841, d/o Aaron and Elizabeth (Hawk) Serfass.
