Hoffman was a very common name in Germany and in PA. I have John Hoffman born 1829 in Germany. On his death certificate is states that George Hoffman/Huffman was his Father. I do not have a Mary Elizabeth (Marillas) Hoffman in my database. Maureen in CA above this question. Sue, sent a lot of information on the Hoffman. Sue, I don't see anything on a George or John Hoffman in that information. John Hoffman was in Maryland in 1854 when his first son was born. John Hoffman and his second wife Margaretha Muller/Miller moved to Marion County, Iowa around 1870. Nicholas Hoch and his family moved to Marion County, IA about the same time. Nicholas Hoch wife was Catharine Baeirlipp b 1818 Bavaria, Germany. On John Hoffman death certificate it states that his Mother's maiden name was Baeirlipp. John's Mother and Catherarine Baeirlipp could have been sisters. Just going by dates and can not prove. In Marion Co., IA John Hoffman daughter Louisa Hoffman, born in PA, married Jacob Smith. Louisa and Jacob were my grgrandparents. This is where the Smith is connected to the Hoffman. Smith is a very common name to research. The Hoffman's could have been in Indiana for awhile. My grgrgrandfather Jacob Smith, SR enlisted in the Mexican War in 1847 at Brookville, Franklin Co., IN. One of John Hoffman son's John K. Hoffman b 1860 Bucks Co., PA maried Philomena Bauer in Logansport, Indiana in 1908. Baerlipp is spelled several different ways. The name could have been Baerliss. Thank you all again.
