    1. [PANORTHA] Researching Jonathan Depuy
    2. Doug Eggert
    3. Hi, My GrGrGrandfather was Jonathan Depuy b 2 Oct 1816 in Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland, or Pennsylvania depending on the source of the information. He married Sarah (Sally) Ann Kleintob 2 Jul 1837 or 1838 in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. She was born 19 Jan 1816 in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Most of their children were born in Luzerne County. In 1847 they moved to Lee County, Illinois. My GrGrandmother Sarah Jane Depuy was born there in 1851. This is what I think I know; on familysearch.org, Jonathan's parents are listed as Jonathan Depuy b 1790 in Maryland and Rachel Winner b 1794 in Maryland. I have found Federal Census records for Jonathan Depue for 1800 and 1810 in Lower. On the 1820 census Jonathan is listed in Smithfield, Northampton, Pennsylvania. There were many different spellings of the name that I have run across whether deliberate or accidental by census takers; Depuy, De Puy, Depew, Deprey, Depue, Depui, DuPuis, and Dupuy. It looks like they were all over from Pennsylvania to New York. As prevalent as these people were, I was hoping that someone from the list could help me get more information. Thank you, Doug Eggert

Feb. 1757, to Christian and Barbara looks promising. Where in Berks County did Daniel Shoemacher reside and do you know what community or church the records refer to? I know that sometimes clergy traveled wide and far to service communities in a circuit-like fashion. Perhaps some of the other children listed in the will can be found in Daniel Shoemacher's records. Are the records accessible? I would very much like to search them for further information. The Jacob Miller born to Jacob and Elisabeth 06 Oct. 1758 also looks like a possibility. Is the Christian Muller above also known as Christian Miller of the Forks of the Delaware or is that a different guy? I very much appreciate the time and effort you have put forth bringing this information to my attention. Kindest Regards, Jim Heather PS - I tend to favor a birthdate of 1757 or 1758 for Jacob because his age at death is very specific and detailed - 79 years, 2 months and 19 days Do you agreee with this reasoning? ----- Original Message ----- From: geri brennan To: jheath01@telus.net ; panortha@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, April 14, 2008 7:34 AM Subject: Re: Emailing: Descendants of Jacob Miller jim as far as spelling, on an easter sunday, my "family" went to ch., same ch. same minister. they were godfried vaelker, his wf. maria valker, his dau, barbara velker, another dau. magd. valker, his son, george volker. i showed this to the guy sitting next to me, and he said, looks like the minister was covering all bases. so do i think spelling counts, no i don't. berks co.-births miller, no jacob miller, john jacob, 11 march 1774, john and wife mueller, jacob, none mueller, john jacob, 24 sept 1728, john jacob and wf mueller, john jacob, bp 31 march 1766 nicholas and wf muller, jacob, 1721 john muller and salome fuchs muller, jacob ca feb. 1757, christian and barbara-records of daniel shoemacher muller, jacob, 19 july 1761, jacob and elisabeth muller, jacob 28 oct 1777 josua henrich and catharina muller, jacob (t) 6 oct 1758 jacob and elisabeth muller, johan jacob ca may 1764 johan jacob and anna mararetha muller, johann jacob 7 march 1766 peter and eva barbara lehigh co. muller, jacob 25 feb 1788 john george and _ muller, johann jacob ca may 1764 johannes and anna mgt muller, johann jacob 7 march 1766 peter and eva mueller, jacob 9 jan 1793 christian and eva cath. miller, jacob 21 oct 1798 conrath and mgt miller, jacob 17 july 1790 sebastian and cath miller, jacob 17 july 1790 george p., and eva miller, jacob 6 june 1779 jacob and elisabeth miller, joh. jacob 3 april 1776 sebastian and cath miller, johann jacob 25 nov 1783 jacob and sarah miller, john j 26 feb 1785 conrad and mgt miller, john jacob 11 may 1791 valentine and eliz miller, john jacob ca 1800 frederick and susanna Best Wishes, Geri

From Briar Creek Union Cemetery, Columbia County his date of death is given as 07 May, 1837, age 79 years, two months, and 19 days. Based on this information, I calculate his birth date at about 18 Feb. 1758. Where did the birth date come from? This certainly bears investigation. It is possible that a name change from Muller to Miller occured at this stage. If so, how is this handled in a genealogical sense? The other birth information you supplied is not even close to the estimated 1757 date, so if Jacob was born in Northampton County, then this could be the correct person. It is also possible that he was a soldier in the Revolutionary War (1775 - 1783) as his age at the time would have made him a candidate. I am cautiously optimistic about this and anxiously await your reply. I am very grateful for your help.
