There are some tax lists from that period (c. 1776) in the published Pennsylvania Archives, which can be found online, complete and free of charge, at Footnote ( http://www.footnote.com/documents/185749/pennsylvania_archives/ ). I am very fond of this source, but I could not find any reference to "Lackaway" or "Parish" or Parrish" in it. I've poked around a lot in Northampton, Westmoreland, and Clarion Counties, Pennsylvania, in my own research, but I don't remember coming across "Lackaway". So I did a Google search for "Lackaway AND Pennsylvania". From this I quickly learned that the "Lackaway settlement" was part of the "Westmoreland District" of Connecticut, and that it is in present-day Pike County, PA. I do recall that a portion of northeastern PA was claimed by Connecticut in those days (just as a portion of southwestern PA --including present-day Westmoreland County, PA-- was claimed by Virginia in those days). This probably accounts for Lackaway tax lists not being found in the Pennsylvania Archives. Some highlights of my Google search were: Chapter 9 of the 1893 History of Luzerne County Pennsylvania, edited by H. C. Bradsby ( http://files.usgwarchives.org/pa/luzerne/history/local/bradsby-9.txt ) talks about the Lackaway settlement and mentions "Capt. Parrish" and Isaac Parrish; Tax list for districts of Westmoreland Co., Colony of Connecticut, August, 1776 ( http://www.teachout.org/du/nan/uptheriver.html ) says copies of these tax lists can be found in the "Proceedings and Collections of The Wyoming Historical and Geological Society," V: 209-218, and lists Zebulon, Stephen, and Isaac Parrish. This page is a transcription, but it does give a published source. A second Web page for the tax lists for districts of Westmoreland Co., Connecticut, August, 1776 ( http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~genbel/oct/conntax1776.html ) is actually a second transcription from the same published source as above. I also did a Google search for "(parish OR parrish) AND Lackaway AND pennsylvania". This returned just 5 results, and they might be of interest to you. I struck out at the LDS Web site, and I'm sorry I cannot tell you which LDS microfilm to send for. But I do hope that something I've said may be of assistance to you or another list member. --John Best Debbie Freeman wrote: > Hello All, > > I hope this is the right list to ask this. > > I need some guidance to figure something out. > > I would like a paper copy of the 1776 Lackaway District Tax List. > > Which microfilm from Salt Lake City (LDS) do I need to send off for to > receive the 1776 Tax List for Lackaway District? > > I located on the internet a reference to a 1776 Tax List for a Lackaway > District that has a Zebulon Parish and Stephen Parish listed. > > If I understand the county formations correctly this Lackaway District in > 1776 is in Northampton Co., PA. > > Thank You > Debbie Freeman > > > > > > *** Your comments and contributions to the postings are most welcome and enjoyed. > > - Nancy > > PAGenWeb Northampton ~ http://pa-roots.com/~northampton/ > > Northampton Archives ~ http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/pa/northampton/ > > PAGenWeb ~ Bucks County ~ http://www.pagenweb.org/~bucks > > Bucks County History and Genealogy ~ http://www.BucksCountyHistory.com > > Pennsylvania GenWeb ~ http://www.pagenweb.org > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to PANORTHA-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message > > >

Sorry, Richard! The correct site for Ohio histories is www.heritagepursuit.com, and the book Historical Collections of Harrison County in full view can be found through www.heritagequest.com or in limited preview at www.books.google.com. Mary Lou
Hi, Richard, I'm sorry I won't be much help here, but can offer a suggestion maybe. Your Philip Swank may have been in Ohio prior to 1800. The first census that included Ohio was in 1820. If he was in Belmont County in 1820, you could try Historical Collections of Harrison County found in a limited preview at www.books.google.com. This book is also available in its entirety through heritagequest which may be available through your local library with your library card. Another site for Ohio history is www.heritagequest.com which also includes a number of what I call "mini bios". There is a book there on the centennial of Belmont County 1803-1903. This site is searchable as well. I have a fourth great grandfather who settled in Belmont County in 1801, and I found information (accurate!) about him in both books. Even with the last name of Merritt, I had to try various spellings in the Harrison County book, but it was very much worth it! Good luck!!! Mary Lou
