    1. [PANORTHA-L] More problems
    2. msouders
    3. After I sent the notification about Pennsylvania library budgets being slashed 50%, Dick Musselman, a highly respected (at least by me!) Northampton County genealogist sent the following, alarming message: Northampton Co. may be facing a double whammy. The Northampton County Archives, probably the best county archives in the state, will be demolished later this year to make room for a prison expansion. The county appears to be taking a step that will make all the archived records much less accessible to the public. They have not announced a plan for any new archives facility. I suspect it will be at a remote site and require a person make a request for a specific item which will then be returned to the courthouse in a couple of days. This is a big step backward from the current immediate access we enjoy. If the new process is implemented it will eliminate the possibility for any "out of the area" visitors using the facility unless they stay for an extended period of time. It will also make it much more time consuming for anyone to do research since many searches require multiple steps during the discovery process. Sorry I had to deliver more bad news, but this archives holds records of many families that are now dispersed across the country and around the world. Our local county executive and county council does not appreciate nor understand the importance of these records despite taking the credit for our county's 250th anniversary celebration last year. He went on in a subsequent message: It might be helpful to contact the following with your concerns: Glenn Reibman, County Executive Northampton County Government Center 669 Washington St. Easton, PA 18042 Phone: (610)559-3191 Frank Flisser, Clerk to Council 669 Washington St. Easton, PA 18042 Phone: (610)559-3195 It might also be helpful to contact one of the local newspapers with a Letter to the Editor. I do not have the contact info for the Express-Times, but the Morning Call can be reached at letters@mcall.com On a personal note, a few years ago I was introduced to Dick at the Marx Room and after talking about where I'd looked and where further I should check, Dick recommended the Northampton County Tax Records in these above-mentioned archives. I spent an afternoon there and was able to trace the movements of one elusive ancestor and establish some other facts as well. At the time I sent a posting to this list suggesting everyone take advantage of this wonderful resource. And now, more than ever. Sincerely, Marilyn

    3. Hi, most Goulds (Rev. War) were from the New England are, but a few from NJ. Some went by Gold and some went Goold. There are only 4 Golds (with pensions) 1 from NY, 2 from MA., and 1 from CT. Since Peter Merwine married a Denton from NY, it might help to research Denton. Sorry I couldn't help more. Best Wishes, Geri

    1. [PANORTHA-L] Gold in Northampton Co.
    2. Mea Culpa. The Ginther GEDCOM only lists 3 generations of Gold. It gives multiple generations of Stocker. As there is only the one Elvina Gold at Worldconnect, I suggest doing a search for her, let table load, then click on Elvina. I checked at www.familysearch.org and found this Gold family for multiple generations (back to Moravia,Germany) by searching for John Gold, rather than for Johannes. (Elvina>George>Johannes) Neither website listed primary sources, so I have noted this information as leads, needs to be verified. J.R. Maxwell Delaware Co., OH

    2. Pat Palmer
    3. I just sent this email to all of the officials listed below. Anyone who wants to use it has my permission, just change the appropriate personal information. But PLEASE, do let them know how much we need them. Pat I am writing to you as a family genealogist with all of my paternal ancestors having resided in Pennsylvania, esp. Northampton, Berks, and Bucks, Montgomery Counties. I live in Oregon and have only been able to make one trip back there in recent years, but I spent most of my three weeks there in the Easton Public Library, Marx Room. However, there are several volunteers who will look up information for those of us who are unable to visit personally, and they use the census and newspaper film, city directories, biographies, as well as manuscripts only available in the Marx Room and not available for inter-library loan. To cut the funding to the libraries by 50% would be devastating to the whole world because with the advent of the internet, the use of your library's data is now world wide. I sincerely request that you think very carefully about how you cut. We, in Oregon, have had to face cuts also, and one possibility would be to cut the hours of operation, rather than any of the services. Another would be adding a fee to out-of-state requestors. I would be most willing to pay a reasonable fee for your library's services. Sincerely yours, Patricia L. Palmer patpalmer5@attbi.com http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/p/a/l/Patricia-L-Palmer/ All outgoing mail scanned by Norton 2002 ----- Original Message ----- From: msouders To: PANORTHA-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, May 02, 2003 5:37 AM Subject: [PANORTHA-L] Library Funding I am not a Pennsylvania resident but I do use the Easton Public Library Marx Room several times a year and have come to admire and respect that collection and the people who keep it running. 3. I have temporarily the Private Records of Rev. Henry Fegley (1874-1906) which includes his records at Jacob's Church in Jacksonville. The followimg is included in the records: David Bachman of West Penn married Ellen Jane Kistler of Weisenberg on July 31, 1881. Ellen Jane's obituary is also in these records. She was born on Oct. 1, 1861 and died of heart disease on April 15, 1899 and was buried at Jacob's Church. Her parents were Jeremiah Kistler and his wife Fyanna Gaumer. David and Ellen had one son and 3 daughters living at the time of her death. Hope this helps.
