My Uncle John GRADWOHL was visiting in Ohio this week(from Nebraska), so I have been "picking his brain". He recalled his Father (my Grandfather) Elmer Adam GRADWOHL speaking of when his Grandmother KEIM (Catherine WARNER 1856-1933) would visit in Easton (she lived in Bethlehem); they had trouble communicating. Elmer did not speak much German, and Grandmother KEIM did not speak much English. I believe the implication here is that the generation, Owen Milton KEIM (1848-1914) & Catherine, spoke German at home. But in the next generation Lillie Daisy KEIM (1875-1948) m. Herbert Elmer GRADWOHL (1876-1958), they spoke English at home. By the time I was growing up in the '60s, only a few words & phrases of German were used, and those are more of the Penn-Deustch type; e.g. "Ve grow to soon oldt, and to late schmart"; dunderkoff, schotze, etc. Has anyone else found this in their line? Is anyone researching a DELANEY or DOLAHEN family in Northampton County? During the 1850 census, there was a Michael Delaney, age 35, in Williams Twp. and Matthew Delaney, age 33, in Easton. Does anyone know who the parents or siblings of these men were? Dalice

In an effort to resolve a question (only important to me) related to the Hoeth massacre, and to figure out where the Hoeth property was, together with the Serfass property, and as a result where Fort Norris once stood, I mapped the surveys of the Hoeth property and surrounding tracts. Dale Berger shared a lot of his Serfass information with me and I wanted to show him, and others I work with and who share my interest in this area, what I learned--and what I learned of the land transactions of Frederick Hoeth. At this point, I'm confident the location of these tracts is as close to accurate as I can get. I'm continuing to map the areas around these tracts and only time will tell how right I am. But in the meanwhile, enjoy. Marie Robinson New e-mail address: marie50@charter.net (no, the 50 is not for my age--I'm only 49--my husband apologized profusely for selecting it).

Recently, while reading a genealogy of the Ackerman family of Northampton County, I came across this passage which refers to Mennonites in Lower Mt. Bethel. Does anyone know anymore about this congregation? (I will need to see what the reference to Wenger is on my next trip to the Marx room.) "On May 7, 1825, Harmon Godshalk and Jacob Ackerman again are mentioned as "Trustees of the Mennonist Congregation of the Twp. of Lower Mt. Bethel. (See Wenger - p. 235) "Jacob was probably operating the mill before his father's death. And to him fell the task of dividing his father's estate equitably among the six sons, acording to Mennonite custom." (From "The Ackerman Family Association, comprising the descendants of George Ackerman, Mennonite, of Lower Milford Township, Bucks County, Pa., and some of the descendats of Stephen Ackerman, Lutheran, of Haycock Township, Bucks County, Pa." compiled by Claire Ackerman Vliet, 1950, p. 112.) Be grateful for any information on this. Marilyn

Burial Ground of the Religious Society of Friends of Stroudsburg (sign on gate). Located on Quaker Alley between 5th and 6th Streets just north of Main Street, Stroudsburg. Partial listing. The Hicksite branch of the religious society of friends (Quakers) purchased this tract of land from Elizabeth Stroud Colbert, sister of Daniel Stroud, in 1831. Friends worshipped here in a frame meetinghouse which stood between this burial ground and Main Street from about 1828 until 1872, when they occupied a new meetinghouse at 7th and Sarah Streets. Today, our only visible reminder of the early Hicksite Quakers is this burial ground, which is under the perpetual care of the Richland monthly meeting (Quakerstown, Pa) along with friends and neighbors of Monroe County.
