    3. Dear Jane, The Female Seminary in Bethlehem was founded by the Moravians in 1749 as the "Seminary for Young Ladies." It was known as "Fem Sem" for generations of Bethlehemites. In 1913 courses were added to bring the institution top the level of college study and a new charter granted as the "Moravian Seminary and College for Women at Bethlehem, PA." In 1953 the institution merged with Moravian College. Moravian College continues today as a fine private liberal arts college, "A Small National Treasure."     3. Shiffer-Northumberland County Charles Shiffer, of Sunbury, was born Dec 8, 1847,at Effort, Monroe county, son of Abraham and grandson of Conrad. Conrad Shiffer lived at Brodheadsville, Monroe County. Children; George, Conrad,Charles, Jacob, Abraham,John and Sally Ann, who married John Kresge. Abraham Shiffer, was born May 18, 1823, and died May 5, 1892. He lived at Brodheadsville, he was a member of the Reformed Church. He was married to Julian "Searfos", d/o William, she was born in 1829 and died Feb. 1881, they had a son, Charles. Charles Shiffer married in 1871 to Savanna Williams, d/o Jacob and Hannah ("Workheiser")Williams, who then lived at Gouldsboro, then Luzerne now Lackawanna county. They had two children, Hubert F., Jamison City, Columbia County, married Esther Sutliff and had one child (La Rue). Raymond, manger of the Western Union Telegraph Company at Sunbury. LaBar, George, grandfather, in 1829 he settled in Middle Smithfield township. He lived to be 112 years old, dying in 1874. Northampton County Jones, Oliver K. of Freemansburg, was born Nov. 28, 1838, s/o Joseph B. and Eliza (Keck) Jones, the latter born in Northampton the former in Lehigh. John Jones, the great-grandfather, was said to have been a native of Wales, came to America as a young man. Oliver K., married Feb. 3, 1863, Clara Oberly, d/o John S., and Catharine (Shimer) Oberly. They were from Northampton County. Children; Harry O., and Charles, both of whom were employed in the War Department of the U.S. Government at Bethlehem under Capt. McNutt. Jones, Joseph E., of Bethlehem township, was born in Northampton County, June 3, 1826, s/o Joseph and Mary (Butz) Jones, also native of Northampton. Griffith Jones, the great-grandfather, was a native of Wales, and was one of the first settlers of Bethlehem township and came to this county in 1750. Joseph E., married Anna E. Messinger, and they had two children, Isabella C. and Flora A. Bethlehem Shaw, Joseph, one of the English members, who was said to have studied for the church but was obliged by ill-health to abandon it. He served as a teacher first among the indians, and then at Walpack and Dansbury, in the Minisinks among the white settlers. There is first wife, Mary Jones, of Phila., died. Buried at Bethlehem Jones, John, 1714-81, blacksmith from Skippack, moved to Bethlehem in 1749, He left 5 sons and fifteen grandchildren. Jones, Rebecca, 1729-59, from Norfolk, Va. Lost her parents when yet a child, came with a family to NY, where she heard the Rev. Jacob Rogers preach. Jones, Joseph, 1755-1824, born on the Jones Farm near Bethlehem. In his 20th year he married Hannah Horn, and lived to see 27 grandchildren. In 1810 he married 2nd to the widow, Maria Nitschmann, nee Van Vleck. Jones, Margaret Pugh, nee Davis, 1784-1814, born in London, England. Jones, Maria, 1740-65, born at Elizabeth, NJ, joined the church in 1756. Lehigh County History Jones, Benjamin, native of Glamorganshire, South Wales, born Aug. 29, 1847. Came to America in 1866 locating to Catasauaqua. Moved to Northampton in 1900. He married first to Emma Kinsey. d/o Alonzo W. and Cecelia (Cabb) Kinsey. of Newport, England. They were the parents of 2 children; Joshua C., of Wilkes-Barre, and William Alonzo. Mrs.Jones died April 26, 1876. He married 2nd to the sister of his first wife (Elizabeth Kinsey), and they had one son, Edwin K. William Alonzo, married in1897 to Lucy Seyfried, d/o Lovine and Elizabeth (Freeby) Seyfried. Mrs. Jones died May 27, 1904. Children; Bessie S., Edith F., William A., and Miriam, who died in infancy. Mr. Jones married 2nd to Talitha Peters, only daughter of Lewis and E.emina (Peters) Peters, and they had Emma Peters Jones. Jones. Walter L. former alderman of Allentwon, native of Wales, was born March 4, 1840. Came to this county with his parents. In 1865 he married Mary C. Kline, d/o Charles and Caroline (Ludwig) Kline, and granddauther of Benjamin Ludwig. Mr. and Mrs. Jones had 8 children, 5 of whom are deceased. Children; Guy R., Helen who married N. Guiley Finch. Walter Jones, father of Alderman Walter Jones, was born Oct. 1842,native of S. Wales, settled in Carbon County. He died age 85, buried in the Union cemetery, Allentown. (He was a noted singer). He married Mary Lewis, who died in 1878, aged 81. Children; 2 who died in infancy, a daughter, died in childhood, David, who was killed on the railroad in 1842, soon after coming to America, Edward, who died in Tamaqua, Sarah Ann, who married Hugh Griffith, of Allentown, she died in 1908 aged 75, John, of Minersville, William, and Walter L. Jones, John M., of Slatedale, Lehigh County, was born Sept. 7, 1851 at Waverly. In 1876 he married Ella Lewis, d/o John and Susanna (Walter) Lewis, of Caenavonshire, Wales. Children; Walter died as a child, Jennie, married G.R. William, and they had (Bessie), Llewellyn, married Emma Dorward., Salie, married D.R. Faust and they had (Heston), Gorden, married Ellen J. Remaly and they had (Claire), Harrison, died at 5, Morris and Edward. Ellis E. Jones son of Ellis, was born in 1823, came to this county at age 19. He died Nov.1890. He married to Anna Moses, d/o John and Elizabeth (Williams) Moses, of Caernorvnshire. Children; John M., Maria, died young, and Angelina, who married R.R. Jones, and they had (Dora, Mabel, Bertha, Frank, and Lizzie). Ellis Jones, the father of Ellis E., and they grandfather of John M., lived at Caernarvonshire. Among his chidlren were; Robert, John, Griffith and Ellis, the father of John M. Jones, John L., of Slatington, was born at Anglesea, in Wales, 1830. He married Ellen L. Jones, d/o Pierce Jones, of Festeurog, Merronethshire, North Wales, and they had 4 children, John H., Elizabeth, who married Rev. Tedivil Williams, of Shamokin, Pierce H., and Robert. Membersof the Welsh Congregational Church. John H. Jones, son of John L., was born in 1860, in 1889 he married Mary A. Members of the Baptist Church. Mrs. Jones's parents were natives of Wales, and in emigrating to America, they landed at Boston, where she was born,and then they moved to Slatington. Jones, Elmer E., of Allentown, was born at Scranton, Sept. 14, 1868. In 1890 he married Mary Howells, d/o Lewis and Mary A. (Jones) Howell. Children; Blodwyn H., married William J. The Bartos are of French Huguenot extraction, the French form of the name being Perdeau. Three came to America in the early days, one John Barto locating in Berks county, in 1730. Isaac Barto mentoned was a large taxable in Oley township, in 1759. His descendant are still living in Washington township. Some time prior to 1735 Jean Perdeau located in Colebrooke township, Berks Co,where he died in 1770. Their son Charles, married Laura Wagner and they had children, (Pearl, who married William Osmer, Flora, and Andrew C., who after his mother's death was reared by his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Shell). Masser, Jacob, son of Johannes, married Catharine Christ, who was born Oct 14, 1816, d/o Jonathan Christ and his wife Maria (Hepler), and the sister of Emanuel Christ (1794-1831). Mrs. Masser died Dec 15, 1890, the mother of 14 children. Jacob B. Masser, son of Jacob, was born June 8, 1838, just across the Northumberland line in Schuylkill county. He married Catharine Wagner, d/o Jacob and Elizabeth (Haas) Wagner, granddaughter of Jacob Wagner, great-granddaughter of Jacob Wagner (July 6, 1725-Nov 30, 1802), and his wife Lovina ( March 1, 1736-July 1, 1827). Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Masser; Richard, Nora, who married Moses Trautman, and Monroe. Hon. Simon P. Wolverton, (subject) was born in Rush township, Jan 28, 1837, s/o Joseph and Charity (Kase) Wolverton, and on the paternal side is English Quaker. According to well authenticated tradition three brothers emigrated from Wolverhampton, England abotu 1700 and settled on Long Island. Of the three brothers who originaly came to this county Charles Wolverton, the lineal ancestor of Simon, in 1714 moved to Hunterdon County, NJ, where the family resided from several generation. Charles Wolverton, a descendant of Charles, who was one of the original immigrants, was the great-grandfather of Simon P. He served in the Rev. He owned a large tract of land in Hunterdon which he granted to his son, Isaac, on Feb 12, 1816. Isaac, was born in Hunterdon County, NJ, Aug 11,1777, and came in 1800 with his father to Northumberland county. The father died in Augusta township, as did the son, who passed away 1855. By his second marriage which also took place at Phila., to Ann Emlen, children; Samuel E., Lemuel and Mary Ann VI. Warner Mifflin, s/o Warner, born 4/6/1777 married Sarah Ann Newlin, d/o Thomas, of Chester county. He married 2nd to Elizabeth Lawas, d/o Samuel and Elizabetth (John) Laws Rebuck, Samuel, son of John, was born June 17, 1810, died March 30, 1882, he is buried at the Salem Refored Church. He married _____ Brosius, who was born Mach 5,1809 anded Feb. 23, 1894. Arrivals Elias Pearson, of Kirklydam, of York, aged about 54 came in the ship, Sheild of Stockton, 1684 History of Bucks County Pearson, Charles M., (subject). The pioneer from whom the Pearson families in this county are descened came from England with William Penn. It is said that he christened "Chester" county in this state. His son Jesse married Hannah, d/o Gideon and Hannah Vore, of Chester county. Nine children were born to this couple, of whom John was the 6th child. He married Martha Miller of Reading, PA., and had 13 children, of whom 7 are living. Charles M., was the youngest. In 1859 he married Lizzie, d/o John and Elizabeth Rockafelllow, of NJ. They had 4 children, Martha, Clara N., Bessie H., Charles E. History of Chester County Peirce, George, (or Pearce as the name appears to have been written by him), or the parish of Winscom, in the county of Somerset, England, and Anne Gainer, of Thornbury, in the county of Gloucester were married 1/12/1679. George, wife and 3 children emigrated from Bristol,the seaport nearest his residence, in 1684. He arrived in Phila., prior to 9th mo 4thd 1684. He died in East Marlborough about 1734, having moved to that that township two years before. Children Betty, born 1680, married Vincent Caldwel George, 1682 Joshua, 1684 Ann 1686, married James Gibbon and William Pim Margaret, 1689 Mary, 1690, married Joseph Brinton Caleb, 1692, married Mary Walter Gainer, 1695 married Sarah Walter Hannah, married Edward Brinton. John, 1704, died before 1720 Joshua Peirce, married 1st 8/28/1713 to Ann Mercer, d/o Thomas and Mary, of Westtown; 2nd marriage, 9/15/1722 to Rachel, d/o Joseph and Hannah Gilpin, of Birmingham. Children by the 1st wife were George, 1714, married Lydia Roberts; Mary, 1717, married William Cloud, Ann,1718, married Caleb Mendenhall, and Adam Redd, by the 2nd wife, Josha, 1724, married Ann Baily, Joseph, 1725, Calab, 1727 Pearce, Cromwell (Col.). His ancestors for several generation resided in the town of Enniskillen, county, Fermangh, Ireland. Col. Cromwell Pearce's great-grandfather (whose name is not preserved) was a member of the Church of England, and with his 4 sturd brothers, served in the Enniskillen corps at the famous batteof Boyne, July 1,1690. His son, Edward,was born in Enniskillen, Aug 6. 1701, and had several brothers, three of whom were named Cromwell, William and Peter. Edward married Fraces Brassington of Dublin, of whose family is only known that she had several brothers and sisters; that 3 of the brothers were Richard,John,and Marmaduke, the latter an eminet physician of Dublin. and that one of the sisters marriad ____Dillon. Edward and Frances (Brassington) Pearce had 3 children born in Ireland and they sailed for Phila., in 1737. Two of the children died of small-pox. Cromwell was the only surviving child, born Dec 1732. They rearched Phila,, in 1738, and they moved near St. David's church, Randor, Chester Co.,. Cromwell, son of Edward, married Margaret Boggs, and they had 9 sons, Richard, Edward, John, George, Cromwell, Marmaduke, and Joseph and two not named, and 1 daughter, Frances who married Isaac Weaver , of West Chester Col. Cromwell, grandson of Edward, married April 23, 1801 to Isabell, d/o Thomas and Sarah (Gronow) Bull, of Tredyffrin, and resided for about a year in Phila., where his son and only child, Lewis Gronow Pearce was born.
