George BEtz, married Rebecca Hummer, d/o Jacob and Rebecca (Freimeier) Hummer. George died in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland Co, in 1885, aged 73. His wife died died in Lewisberry, York Co., PA, aged 60 Jacob Hummer was a son of John George Hummer, born at New Holland, Lancaster Co. in 1758 and died at White Oak in 1854 aged 96. His wife Rebecca Freimeier, passed away in 1815, aged 38. One of their daughters, Catharine Hummer, married a nephew of Dr. Benjamin Rush of Phila. Dr. Israel H. Betz, son of George, was born in Penn township, Lancaster County, Dec 16, 1841. In 1869 Dr Betz marriedd Rebecca F. Weitzel, d/o John and Nancy (Fisher) Weitzel. John Weitzel, the paternal grandfather of Rebecca F., was of Dauphin County, and was survived by his widow, Christina (Marsh) Weitzel, who was born in 1777 and died 1850. She was buried at the Weitzel plot at Salem United Brethren Church, in Fishing Creek Valley. John Weitzel, father of Mrs. Dr. Betz, was one of the orignal members of Salem Church, and was also the first person to be buried in its cemetery, in 1844. Gottlieb Fisher, the maternal great-grand father of Mrs. Dr. Betz, was an early settler of Fishing Creek Valley in York County. From Gottlieb Fisher and his wife Ursula Fisher sprang a large number of descendants in the upper end of the county, many of whom to distant locations. His son, David Fisher was the grandfather of Mrs. Betz. Best Wishes, Geri
Maryann- I've had a lot of email problems the past two weeks so only got it fixed yesterday (hopefully) and saw your message. In my research for the name "Souders" I've found half of them indexed under "Sanders" so did take notes on this couple a while ago. I thought that Peter "Sanders" could have been a Peter Souders who disappeared from Warren Co., NJ, after 1840. Then I found Peter Souders' older brother Michael Souders living in Towamensing Twp., in 1850 (under the name Souder) and was even more convinced that that Peter Sanders was the one I was looking for. There was an 1840 census record for Peter Souders in NJ but there was also an 1840 census record for a Peter "Sauder" in Towamensing Township, Northampton Co, PA, p. 256: SAUDER, Peter Males: 1-under 5 2-bet 5-10 1-30-40 Females: 1-under 5 1-bet 5-10 1-30-40 On the same page or an adjacent page was a census record for an Isaac Moyer and my Peter Souders named a child "Isaac Meyer Souders". It was not impossible for someone to be enumerated in two censuses for the same year if they'd moved. Then, I found my Peter Souders listed in the 1850 census for Trenton, NJ, while there was that other census record for "your" Peter Sanders in Towamensing Twp. in 1850 so I concluded they were two separate people. Somewhere I have a marriage record for Peter Sanders and Juliana. From the top of my head, I seem to remember her last name as Rosen and that they were married at the First Reformed Church or German Evangelical Church of Easton. As this was where my Peter Souders marriage was recorded (as Peter "Sanders" to Lydia Meyers in 1835) I thought the marriage to Juliana could have been a first marriage for him. I will point out that the surname "Sanders" deriving from an English family is quite rare in this area. Almost all the Sanders I've found are really Sauder/Sauders/Souder/Souders/, particularly if they go to German churches. There is another German name, Xander or Zander, which is sometimes rendered as "Sanders" which you should consider. Another group of bona fide English Sanders resided in Morris County, NJ, some of whom moved further west. Please get in touch if you have more questions.
