Hi.. What great dialogues re: foods, traditions, dialect. I'm learning a lot. Thanks to each for adding different twists. My Deutsch ancestors left so early I have no tie of knowledge, other than what I read here .. What sets mine apart: 1) They're early; came in early 1720s to PA from NY. 2) I'm not sure they're all Deutsch. John Holder b. 1694 in London lived there for the first 15+ years of his life. He emigrated to N. Am. 1710, or earlier, with his mother, Sybilla Graeff (German?). John's dad, Reu Holder, "left the family early" according to John's memorial, Moravian archives. Was Reu Holder English even though they probably lived in an immigrant area near Tower of London? 3) They were known to be English speaking, but John, like his dad, married a German girl in NY, Barbara Volck. The Volcks senior were from the Palatinate arriving with Kocherthal's first party. Even though they were granted land along the Hudson R. ("Hochland" = bluffs?), they sold it and, along with John Holder, set out for PA. Volck's neighbor, named Fisher, sold and moved (somewhere) at the same time. Who knows what happened to John Holder's mother. 4) John Holder's sons became divided on the issue of the impending Revolution; my line remained loyal to Britain, in the 1770s-80s, and started over in Nova Scotia. 5) My 19 yr old 'Loyalist's parents, John Holder (Jr.) and Rebecca (Custer) Holder disappeared during the Revolution. No traces. My heart aches for the missing information. I'd love to know possible areas of origin for those with interesting names. Any words of wisdom, glimmer of recognition.. or educated conjecture (even uneducated).. is welcome. w

Ludwig Maentzinger or Mensinger Born in 1746 in Eppingen Germany. Moved to New world in 1751 at age 5 with father, Leonhard and grandfather Martin. (Both these parents/grandparents may have had a given name of Johan but went by the second name.) Ludwig was in the Northampton Militia in 1778, Company 2, Third Battalion, Northampton county Militia 7th class. He may have been a blacksmith and farmer.. He did live and pay taxes on 150 acres, in Penn Township, in1785. He is also listed in the census for 1790. I need all of the information I may receive. Wife, names, age, where married and childrens names plus birthplaces. It is as if he lived without touching anything permanently. I have much more information on his father and grandfather than I do on him. He is my GGG Grandfather. Nothing seems to work . So here is the shotgun approach again. I will reply to every message I get... Lee J. Mensinger 1229 Fredericksburg road, New Braunfels, Tx 78130 1-830-620-6575 lemen@x25.net

Hi all, While I'm not against having Roll Calls on the mailing list, I do ask that I be consulted first. If you are going to participate in the Roll Call please: 1 - Place the "major" surnames you are researching in the Subject line 2 - Place any other surnames in the body of the message 3 - DO NOT type "Roll Call" in the Subject Line of your message. With the volume of messages that are generated folks are obliged to open up every message where if you had followed step 1 they could easily be screened. Thanks!
