Johannes (John) and Johan Nicholas (1750 - 1823) were brothers, possibly sharing or maybe dividing the original homestead. Leonard, the immigrant, migrated to Albemarle County, Virginia sometime around 1776 with 3 sons and one or two daughters. He died there in 1797. Three sons: Johannes, Johan Nicholas and Jacob (who died unmarried in service of the Continental Army in 1784), as well as at least one daughter, Margaret, whom we are fairly confident married Adam Swavely; stayed here in Berks. Nicholas moved to Northumberland County in about 1805. The apparent movement of John and Nicholas here in Berks from Western District to Earl, and then to Pike was due to the area being assigned to those different municipalities by the movement of their borders. (part of Western District became Earl when Earl was formed in 1782, and a part of Earl later became the southwestern part of Pike) I can give more details on these families if you like. In respect to the ongoing speculation about the origins of the GRANTs in question, the existence of records with spellings such as GRAEND and GRONT could be viewed as evidence for either case. As one who spends time with Amish and Mennonite folks as well as the "dutchy" folks "down in Oley," I can say that these could be phonetic spellings rendered by German pastors, whose pronunciation of "GRANT" would sound very much that way. Of course, given what we know about the German ancestry of most locals then, as well as the trend toward anglicizing of German surnames during that period, I would consider German origins to be more likely. Has anyone found German records of GRAEND or GRONT families? I am a descendant of Daniel Heffelfinger born in 1807 and was baptized at the Tulpehocken Trinity Church Jackson Twp. Lebanon County. He was the son of Martin. I am looking for information on this Martin, birthdate and his parents. I have seen a Martin born 1774 son of Martin and also a Martin born 1769 son of Johannes. I was wondering if you may have some useful information for me. Thanks Roy Zimmerman
