>From the Charleroi Mail, Saturday, May 6, 1944, Page 2: "Proposed Two Way Radio May Aid Police Work Uniontown, Pa.----Uniontown police department, faced with a manpower shortage due to the Selective Service Act, may find a partial solution for its problem in the proposed purchase of two-way radio equipment which long has been advocated for greater service to the city. Council, at its meeting this week, authorized Mayor Russell E. UMBEL to advertise for the furnishing of frequency modulated police communication type, two-way radio equipment to be installed at the police station and in the prowl car. At the same time, reading was given an ordinance providing for the appropriation from the current general fund of $2000 to the department of public affairs for meeting cost of the equipment. The department, at the present time, is short three men who now are in military service. Five more are within draft age, with one already having passed the required physical examination. 'All of these men will not be replaced, pending their return from the Armed Forces,' said Mayor UMBEL. 'We may have to temporarily employ several men but these will be above draft age. 'The two way radio equipment may help, at least partially, to solve the manpower shortage. At the same time, such equipment, without doubt, will materially aid in the promptness and efficiency with which the police endeavor to serve the residents of this city.' The mayor explained that some investigation already has been made and that should the equipment be purchased, it will be subject to approval of the War Production Board." ===== Eva Dayle Zippay Tallahassee, Florida [email protected] __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
