Kin Seekers: "SL" or "Sl" is used in Soundex and Miracode Indexing Systems to mean Sister-in-law or Son-in-law. "Hk" was for Housekeeper, "Se" for Servant, "Se.Cl" for Servant's Child. Many census takers used their own Abbreviation, even if they were not 'official'. I highly recommend The Census Book by William Dollarhide. He lists 129 Relationtion Terms and Abbreviations Used in the Soundex and Miracode Indexing Systems. (By the way, he only lists Son-in-law for SL ). Many of these abbreviations were taken from the unoffical abbreviations used in the census schedules.I have this book and several others and would be more than happy to try and find answers to general questions concerning the census.
