Hi! I'm new to this list. My father had told me stories about his grandfather Frank Lederer who lived in this area. He was a glassblower along with other members of his family. Can anyone tell me if glassworks are a big thing there in the Valley? This would have been at the end of the 1800's. Does anyone know anything of the Lederer (Leader,Leder) family? I am also looking for the surname of Booth which also came from this area. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hi Nancie, Yes, glassmaking was and still is a big industry in the valley. There was a glass factory in Belle Vernon, Fayette Co.--I don't know if it is still operational or not. Also, Charleroi, across the river in Washington Co. has always had glassmaking. In the first part of the town's history Pittsburgh Plate Glass had a factory there, and now Corning has a plant there. The Corning plant has been there at least 50 years, probably more. I recall a George Leader, who was, I believe, a local politician around the 50s or 60s, but I have no further information. Eva, The glass factory in the Fayette Co. section of Belle Vernon was shut down when I was a kid. Don't recall whether it was in the late 40s or early to mid 50s. What I would like to know is where was the Albany Glass Co. located in PA. My g,g,grandfather Stephen Whetzel was a master teaser at glass factories one of which was the Albany Co.
