    3. Thanks, Mike, for passing along the link. Very interesting reading. My father, Charles Jenkins, born in 1908, use to speak of the influenza of 1918. Everyone in his family were too ill to care for themselves. The task of caring for his parents and siblings rested on the small shoulders of my then 10 year old father. For some reason dad did not get the flu even though he was considered to be a fragile child. He was laid aside by the doctor at birth because the doctor considered him to be dead. It was only though the heroic efforts of a nurse that he was forced to breathe. Dad had several life threatening illnesses and events in his life; but, his determination and will to live kept him going until 1990 when he died at nearly 82. I believe that we should cherish and learn from our elder generation as they have had to face many hardships and have learned how to survive.
