I am interested in information about the community of Monessen. If any one can help or lead me in the right direction I would be grateful. early history of the land and its inhabitants: Native peoples, geology, etc. early family settlers: Manown, McMahon, Miller, Luce, McGowan, Cook, Neil, Mathews, Reeves, Neil. Any family stories about Monessen through the years. Thanks, Cassandra Vivian
Cassandra, A couple of suggestions: Try the Historic Pittsburgh books on line, full text collection, and do a simple search on Monessen. You will come up with many names associated with it and probably history, as well. http://digital.library.pitt.edu/pittsburgh or go to the Westmoreland County History Project http://www.pa-roots.com/~westmoreland/historyproject/index.html where a transcription of the History of Westmoreland County that was written in 1906 by John N. Boucher & John W. Jordan is ongoing. Another suggestion is to go the Westmoreland-Historic group and ask about Monessen. Many of the list members are very familiar with places in Westmoreland County and may have some great stories to tell! They will also know of other books and websites, I'm sure. The website to join that is listed here. http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/usa/PA/westmoreland.html Good luck! Marilyn G.
