PA. was one of the fortunate states whereby the special census of Civil War Veterans or their widows were recorded and preserved. Western PA. is very well covered in this and the NARA microfilms are available; HOWEVER there is no index to it, so if you know where your relative was living at the time, it narrows things down; otherwise, you have to go, county by county. 3. Thanks, Cora, for the info on western PA civil war vets or their widows! Since I'm not in PA, nor am I in DC (NARA), could this be accomplished through inter-library loans, etc.? And if so, would the records be at NARA AND somewhere in western PA? I would think others of us out of the area would appreciate knowing how we can about getting the records. I use the LDS library a lot and order films, but I don't believe I ever saw anything about the 1890 census records of these individuals. I've just heard others "talk" about how some states/cities had their own records around that timeframe, and info could be "recreated" in a "back-door" kind of way. Thanks!
