    1. [PAMONVAL] HORST Family Deaths
    2. Darrell & Nancy Giles
    3. While doing volunteer data entry at our local library in Ontario, California, I came across this article which might be of some interest to someone on this list. This does not relate to any surname that I am researching personally. Nancy Ontario Family Of Three Killed By Monoxide Gas Monoxide gas claimed its first victims of the winter season here when an Ontario dairyman, his wife and their 5-year-old daughter were found dead last night in their home, Euclid avenue and Riverside drive. The victims were Menno Horst, 25; his wife, Allene, 24; and their daughter, Evelyn Joan. A second daughter, Eleanor, age 13 months was on a visit at the time at the home of her great-grandparents, Mr and Mrs. B. P. Swarzendrubber, 690 First avenue, Upland. Discovery of the triple tragedy was made by Deputy Sheriffs J. R. Murray and D. M. Doughty, who were called to investigate after Mrs. Roy Roth of Upland, a cousin of the Horsts, reported to police she had gone to the dairyman's home to find it dark and that she and a neighbor, A. R. Huffman, had been unable to arouse occupants. The officers, forcing a rear door, found the dead bodies of Mr and Mrs. Horst in bed and that of the young daughter on the living room floor, indicating she was overcome by fumes from an open gas heater, which was burning high, while trying to escape. Relatives said the Horsts, who had previously heated their home by the oven in their kitchen gas range, had just purchased the open heater at a second-hand store. The baby, they said, had been taken to the Swartzendruber home to stay because Mr. Horst and Evelyn Joan were suffering from severe colds and it was believed for that reason they had left the heater on and opened no windows on retiring. Deputy Coroner E. P. Doyle estimated the three had been dead for some 18 hours when the bodies were found. They were removed to the Stone mortuary, where an inquest was pending. Mr. Horst, a native of Chambersburg, Pa., came here 15 years ago from Texas. He is the son of Mrs. L. K. Horst of San Antonio Heights and is also survived by five sisters and two brothers. Mrs. Horst, a native of Upland, was the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. George Beare, missionaries, now serving at Dhamtari, Central province, India. At the age of 6 years, she accompanied her parents to India, but returned six years ago and married. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. The Daily Report, Ontario, California Nov. 16, 1946 Arrange Triple Funeral Rites For Gas Victims Triple funeral services for Menno Horst, 26; his wife, 25, and their daughter, Evelyn Joann, 5, accidently asphyxiated Friday at their ranch home, Euclid avenue and Riverside drive, will be conducted Thursday, 2 p.m., at the Upland Brethren in Christ church, with the Stone mortuary in charge. Deputy Coroner E. P. Doyle, investigating the tragedy, resulting from leaving an open gas heater burning in a closed house, said there would be no formal inquest. Officiating at the funeral will be the Revs. John Leatherman, and Sherman Maust of Alpine Mennonite church and the Rev. Alvin Burkholder of the Upland Brethren in Christ church. Interment will be in Bellevue cemetery. The Daily Report, Ontario, California 18 Nov 1946
