    1. [PAMONVAL] New Special Collections feature - Mon Valley Site
    2. Mike Donaldson
    3. Hello all... I've created a new feature on the Mon Valley History and Genealogy site. I call it the Special Collections - a place to submit your ancestors hand written notes, from scrapbooks, diaries, letters, bibles, or journals, etc. The link is on the sites Main Page. A great example of the type of info to be found here was submitted by Teri Hewitt. The Scrapbook of Avarilla Bell Hess, hand written notes between 1899 and 1930, contains many familiar surnames from the site and this mailing list. It included 4 of my grand parents, and about 8 aunts/uncles. The first submission from Mrs. Hess's notes contains 282 entries. Thanks to Teri for sharing. One note about submitting material: Please be certain to submit only material that does not infringe on the privacy of living individuals, and also keep the material limited to genealogical or historical subjects. A handwritten letter about a persons travels in the 1860's is fine, but it would be best if grandma doesn't find out that your mom didn't like her brownies afterall, online :-)! -- Thanks Mike Donaldson, Bentleyville, PA (mdonald4@bentcom.net) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mon Valley History and Genealogy Website: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pamonval/ Mon Valley: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow: http://www.geocities.com/mdonald318/ My family gedcom: http://www.my-ged.com/donldson ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Listowner of: Monongahela River Valley of Penna Rootsweb mailing list: PAMONVAL-L@rootsweb.com - Mail mode PAMONVAL-D@rootsweb.com - Digest mode Bieneman / Bienemann Rootsweb Mailing list Bienemann-L@rootsweb.com - Mail Mode Bienemann-D@rootsweb.com - Digest mode

    1. [PAMONVAL] Devers/Sample connection
    2. Hi group, Just today I received some new information on my Devers/Sample connection from the California Historical Society. I wonder if anyone has more info since it could be there are other Dever families living in the area now. This particular obit on Lucius Marchand Devers age 76 died 8 Apr 1951 in the Charleroi-Monessen Hospital and it mentions his parents & my 4th gr aunt Ella Sample Devers and her husband Henry Devers. Lucius's wife was Olivia E. Devers who died 1943. It does mention the names of their 3 children, one of which lived in Coal Center in l951. Henry Devers & his brother Harry are both buried at the Old California Cemetery and were both in the Civil War in WVA units. I saw their broken tombstones when visiting the cemetery last Easter. Would appreciate any info. Patricia-Norfolk, VA

    1. [PAMONVAL] Evans Family to Mon Valley in early 1900.s?
    2. Allene Pierce-Avey
    3. Listers, I have some Evans family that I believe came directly from Manchester, England to the Mon Valley in three waves, first the grandparents (John Thomas Evans and Emlar), then the son and 2 sons (James Smallman Evans with Fred and ?) and then his wife Sarah with Lily, Ruth and Harold in about 1906. James' brother was Benjamin Evans who I believe lived in the area and might have been prominant; perhaps in Brownsville. I would appreciate any contact on the part of Evans' enthusiasts! 1. [PAMONVAL] More Mon Valley photos; Individually identified
    2. Greetings and salutations, all.... As some of you know, some of the photos that I've scanned in are now on Mike McDonald's Mon Valley site; while he's working on setting up the next batches I sent, I thought I'd offer them up to the lists as well for those interested. Batches 4 and 5 : Mystery photos (Feeling adventurous? See if you recognize anyone!) I haven't the faintest idea who any of these people are...if anyone can positively identify them, let me know. ~PS: Photo two (batch 4) was a dageurrotype photo that was rescued from the trash bin when the family was digging out pictures. I scanned it in and lightened it up as best I could. Judging from the garb the kids are wearing, I'd put this in about the 1870s. Batch 6: Photo 1 - JK Davison; Elizabeth PA. Looks to be a boat on the river. Photo 2 - Jim Stearns; 1947 Photo 3 - George Brown Photo 4 - Joe Pettnati; 1920s Photos 5&6 - Allegheny Co. Fairgrounds; 1960 Photo 7 - South Park Fairgrounds; 1959 Once again, I can send these piecemeal, by the batch, or you can wait till they make it online. They're currently scanned in at 150 dpi, .jpg format.( for those of you who ask about things like this). I remain, In service, Melissa Strobel

    1. [PAMONVAL] Scrapbook of AvaRilla (Bell) Hess
    2. Mike Donaldson
    3. Hi Teri. I'm sending a copy of this message to the PAMONVAL mailing list, due to the large number of surnames mentioned in the posting in the posting in question, on the Washington County genealogy site. It would be worth a look to anyone who had family in the Belle Vernon, Fayette City, Allen Township area! go to: http://www.chartiers.com/pages-new/articles/scrapbook.html I just happened to stumble across your posting on the Washington Co site, and was quite amazed at the number of my family members or extended family members included in AvaRilla's notes. Possibly the reason that I haven't found it earlier, is the fact that my great grandfather, James DONALDSON and my great great grandfather John DONALDSON's names are spelled DONALSON, so the page would not come up on a search. Some of the surnames that are quite closely related to my tree: DONALDSON DALE KREPPS TIPPINS FURNIER (Misspelled FURMIER) The above lived in Allenport There are probably a dozen other names that are within my files. Do you know if there is any other information from the scrapbook. Also do you know if AvaRilla (Bell) Hess was related to the people she wrote about, or were these friends? The page title says (Page 1-10) are there more pages? I would be very much interested in learning more about this scrapbook. -- Thanks Mike Donaldson, Bentleyville, PA (mdonald4@bentcom.net) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mon Valley History and Genealogy Website: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pamonval/ Mon Valley: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow: http://www.geocities.com/mdonald318/ My family gedcom: http://www.my-ged.com/donldson ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Listowner of: Monongahela River Valley of Penna Rootsweb mailing list: PAMONVAL-L@rootsweb.com - Mail mode PAMONVAL-D@rootsweb.com - Digest mode Bieneman / Bienemann Rootsweb Mailing list Bienemann-L@rootsweb.com - Mail Mode Bienemann-D@rootsweb.com - Digest mode

    1. Re: [PAMONVAL] John Conaway--Breaking News
    2. Mike Donaldson
    3. Eva, Thanks for that info! It does bring up a couple of questions though. John Conaways youngest child, Willimina "Minnie" Conaway, was born in March, 1870, two years following the death of Rhodias/Rhodes ??. I also have Johns wife listed as Eliza A ___. It appears that Eliza was Johns second wife! (I don't have my documents here, but I got Elizas name from either the 1870 or 80 census. I've also missplaced a copy of Johns will, which was typed on my old computer which has subseqintely crashed! I will have to find my backup and/or paper copies. I'll have to get back to you with that info once I dig up my "stuff". As you can probably tell, I've gotten kinda busy with other things and have let my geneaolgy research lag a bit. Hopefully I'll be able to get "back to normal" soon , what ever that is! 3. Hello all, I have just received the pension application file that John Conaway of Fredericktown & Elco, 1820-1905, filed as a dependent of his son Jesse J. who served in the Civil War. Among other information an affadavit submitted by John Conaway states that he and Jesse's mother (Rhodes/Rodias) were married January 18, 1840 at Millsboro, Pa. by Remembrance Hughes, Esq. and that she died April 8, 1868 at Fredericktown, Pa. He does not give her name--I got that from 1850 & 1860 census returns. 3. Hello All, Melissa Stobel's first batch, actually the first 3 batches, are online now at the Mon Valley History and Genealogy site (Go to main page, click on Mon Valley Photos, then special collections). Permission has been given for those who want to download the pictures may do so from the site. (see note on index page). There are a few unnamed individuals in these photos, so if anyone recognizes any of them, let us know so I can add the info! Melissa, In a previous post, you listed some surnames of folks in the pictures. I assume those names are for people who's pictures I haven't gotten as of yet. If I'm in error, please let me know! Also, for your future batches, once the cheese is removed from your scanner, please send them to this email address, rather than the AOL addy.
