Hi list and especially Tom Speers, Do you know of a connection between the Teggarts, the Beelers, and the Griffiths??? My grandmother was Ada Griffith Teggart, whose parents were John S. Teggart a teacher, and Martha Ann Beeler. Middle names aren't just handed out are they? Jan
Hi Mark, Great to hear from you! I'm your cousin. My connection is through Harriet Bennet Thomas, daughter of Benjamin and Hannah, who married William Beeler. I'd love to compare notes. I have Benjamin Thomas' s Bible which has the vital records. I also have my grandfather's notebook which contains letters from the relatives for the family reunions they used to hold. This is what I know about the Alexanders and am wondering if I'm on the right track. According to the Benjamin Thomas Bible, Hannah Alexander was born the 2nd of May 1791 at Ten Mile Creek. Her parents were listed as Joseph Alexander and Rosa Ann Jones. According to descendents letters circa 1910, Rosa Ann Jones was born in Ellicotts Mills, Maryland 17 October 1765 and died about 1850 in Stark County, Ohio. Joseph was born 9 July 1765 in Maryland and died in Ohio 9 June 1847 in Ohio. Do you know more exactly where he was born and died? Joseph's father was Isaac Alexander and his mother was Elizabeth. In doing further searching I'm finding another name, Joseph Mc Knitt Alexander. Is that name associated with our Alexanders? Jan
There are 6 or more Griffith tombstones in the Belle Vernon Cemetery. One is Ananias Griffith who served in the 22nd PA Calvary. Another is a John and Sarah Griffith born about 1864. I did not get a detailed JPG picture of the other tombstones to know what the names and dates are. Hi Jan, Elizabeth & Joseph Alexander were my 5th great grandparents, Also Hannah was my 4th great grandmother. She married Benjamin Thomas of Rostraver Township. The Thomas' were a very large family in the area and are of Welsh descent. They came to America in 1730. I have three conflicting marriage dates for Hannah and Benjamin. they are: Sept. 9, 1811; Sept 11,1811; and Sept 24,1811. They were more than likely married in Webster, PA. They had a total of eleven children and are buried in the historic Fells Cemetery located on Fells Church Road & Fellsburg Road in Rostraver twp. Westmoreland County,PA ( just a ways up the road from Webster). I don't have much on the Alexanders but I have a ton on the Thomas'. Let me know what you need. Here is just a small outline of their descendants. Hope to hear from you! Hi List, Can anyone tell me if Ten Mile Creek in Washington County is the same as Ten Mile Village? I am researching Elizabeth and Joseph Alexander who had Hannah Alexander in 1791. Thanks in advance for the help. Jan
As I was searching through ebay today, I noticed there is a plate listed for the First Methodist Church in Monongahela in case anyone on this list is interested. There is a picture and some church history is given on the back of the plate: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1121364784 - Barbara Heutchy
My husband's family, I have been told, came from this area. His gggrandfather Hamilton Bridges I have found in an 1850 census spelled Bridget but 4 years later he witnessed a will and it was spelled Bridges. He was in the service 1861 it was Bridges. He was married to Sarah Morrow. I can't get past 1850. My husband's ggrandfather Michael Kraska was in a 1900 census in this same area and I can't find anything after that. I would appreciate any information or ideas. Thanks, Susie

I've been told that my maternal grandparents came from this area. Does anyone have any information on the family of Lederer (Leader,Leder) or Weideman (wildeman)? Has anyone heard of the Lederer Brothers Farm. Another name I am looking for is a Pearl Booth who's mother was Bertha Adelia Leader. She had a brother Francis and I'm told she opened the first Bible School in Pittsburgh. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Jean, Are you connected to the Butler Co. Pa. mailing list? There are people on that list researching the Cratty line. Some of that line later moved to Ohio. Also, I'm interested in your Jester line. According to Elias Laughlin's Civil War Pension records he married a Della/ Dulana Jester August 1861 at West or East Elizabeth, Allegheny Co., Pa. Their children were Charles born Dec 27, 1861, Elias born May 17, 1866 and William born Feb. 20, 1868. I know son Charles was born in Pa. but at some point after the war Elias and Della/Dulana moved to Ohio. Elias died Oct 17, 1918 in a Soldiers Home at Massillon, Ohio. Della/Dulana had died before this. Any of this familiar to you? Lona lona@pdq.net > William Cratty married Francis (Fanny) Jester about 1866 in Coal Bluff > Washington County. Sorry about that--I put one too many / in the url-- The absolutely, 100% accurate (I think) url is: http://molecular-genealogy.byu.edu/ Eva (Who feels like she is on that well-known road that is paved with good intentions.) ===== Eva Dayle Zippay Tallahassee, Florida evadayle@yahoo.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hi Listers, Sorry about that, especially because I really do think most of you would be quite interested in the article. I followed the directions on the link that says "Send this article to a friend", so I don't know why it didn't work. Unfortunately, I deleted today's SSD, which contained the url, after I read the article myself (and tried to send it to you.) Try this: http:///molecular-genealogy.byu.edu/ which works when I try it, so hopefully will work for you. The article is about the use of DNA testing in genealogy. Apparently in the not-too-distant future that will be a tool available to the genealogist, although undoubtedly an expensive one. It's really exciting news to me--I think about being able to prove for certain the paternity of my grandmother, who was born out of wedlock, but everyone "knows" who her father was. I'm sure I'm not the only one in this boat. Hope this works!! Eva ===== Eva Dayle Zippay Tallahassee, Florida evadayle@yahoo.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hello Jan and Mark, You may find more info on the early Alexander families in the book on the Fleniken/Flanagan family that were intermarried with them. There are branches of the Alexander and Flanagan families that moved south about the middle 1700's due to the French and Indian War Indian troubles. They moved to the Mechlingburg County Charlotte, NC and York County, SC area where I now live. This is my cousin William Fleniken's family line and not mine. I have not seen the book that was done by one of the Flanagans who lives in Ohio. I believe there has been cross naming of children's names such as William Flanagan Alexander and William Alexander Flanagan. Today, a William Alexander Flanagan lives near Rock Hill, York County, SC and a Flanagan and an Alexander are neighbors just outside York, SC. However, I am interested in learning the parents and families of James and Mame Davidson, and Sarah J. McCrory spouses you mentioned below. Hi Everyone, Is there a website or a place I could call that lists the cemeteries in Monongahela? Thanks for your help, Linda
Dave, I received this from a class that I took in Genealogy. The Effective date is determined by the Federal Government - -Census Bureau. Alot of good information is on Brenda's Guide to Pa. Genealogy. Address is http://www.chartiers.com/pages/palinks.html When Brenda's page comes up click on FRAMES. Dee turekd08@aol.com Researching--SCANLON-BOYD-LEEPER-AMMON
That doesn't mean the Census had to be "completed" by April 1, 1910, it means the information was supposed to be "effective April 1, 1910". Wouldn't matter what date AFTER April 1 the information was gathered. The Census 2000, of which I was an enumerator, (and know for a FACT that information is wrong, wrongly gathered, lied about, etc), the date we did the work was in March, and the "effective date" was April 1, 2000, meaning that the Census was done BEFORE the "effective date." Now, if someone were to die on March 31, they couldn't be included in the April 1 Census, but the GOVERNMENT DOES NOT CARE! They want numbers, regardless of "where it comes from." I live in a "city" of about 27,000 people. Some people KNOW the population of this "town" is under 25,000 but in order to get proper Federal Funding, the population HAS to be over 25,000. So lies were made on Census forms. I was an enumerator (not in this town), but I know what I was taught, and the way they handled things, and I'm not afraid to put my name to it! Robert D. Thank you for posting the Census effective dates. That's something I've always wondered, and even though the Census takers (excuse me, "enumerators" - I was one in 2000) don't always abide by the "rules" (rules? What rules?), it makes a big difference in figuring ages, and other important dates! Thanks, Robert D. Mollenauer, Jr. Ridgecrest, CA
