Does anyone know where 539 W. 5th Av. in McKeesport might have been. There exists no such address today [unless it is just vacant land]. My Mom grew up there until she was ten years old and i'm just wondering. Cora

Hi friends, A short time ago someone on the list was searching for a picture of the now defunct 9th Street School in Charleroi. Currently there is postcard of the school from 1907 on ebay. Sorry, I forgot to look for the closing date of the auction. Just do a search for Charleroi on the home page and it will come up. It is a good picture of the school taken from 9th & McKean Ave. and shows the twin circular "towers". Ironically, the location of the seller is in Tallahassee Fl, but it isn't me! Eva, in Tallahassee, of course ===== Eva Dayle Zippay Tallahassee, Florida evadayle@yahoo.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hi everyone, Just found this list and am impressed by what I see. Am looking for Thompsons in this area, and noticed where several bios were listed. Could you please tell me how I would access these? Other familiar names were also listed. Can you tell I am new at this? Any info on the Coopers, Thompsons and wallaces as well as Sharpnacks would be greatly appreciated. And hopefully somewhere along the line I would be able to help one of you. Thank you and God Bless, Jean Get you free email at http://www.wtvhmail.com
Dear List Members...I just finished this look-up request for one of our listers and thought I would send it to you in case it is of help. The Highland Cemetery in California, Pa. was est. 1888. The Highland Cemetery Records book is almost 300 pages and in chronological order so the search has to be page by page and takes time. Wilson, being one of the more common surnames, is not easy to work with and I hope this look-up will help someone. Rebecca Davis Pauley (Becky) Washington, Pa. Hi, There was a gas station, "Gillingham's", in the 200 block of Fallowfield Ave. across from Second Street Elementary School in Charleroi in the 50s, 60s, & 70s--maybe longer. I attended 2nd St. School so remember it well. It was unusual for 2 things--it wasn't on a corner (one or 2 houses away from the corner)and set back from the road only as far as were the houses on either side of it, and there was a live pet monkey in the window. Hope this helps Eva in Tallahassee --- "T. Gillingham" <tmg@brads.net> wrote: > Am hoping to find information on the Gillingham > family. Am hoping to find information on the Gillingham family. My GGG Grandfather, William Preston Gillingham came to that area in the mid to late 1840's and many of his children made the home there. Would be very greatful for any information at all. Thank you Tom Gillingham
Would anyone be able to go to the cemetery at Venice and see if my grandmother's stone was put in place? No one ever had a marker made. I drove up from KY last year and ordered it. It is just a very small marker and lays flat on the ground. I would like to be sure it got there. It is the United Presbyterian (UP) Cemetery, Venice, PA, the only cemetery in Venice. The family plot is in the center section as you circle down toward the church. It is about halfway down the center drive on the left and sits back several rows to the left. It is in the Johnston family plot: James Johnston, wife, Dohrman Johnston, etc. Her first husband's stone (PYLE) should be right beside her stone. Her name is Clara B. Stewart Dates 1885 to 1961 There is a little rose on the stone. It is flat and only about 16" I would appreciate it if anyone is out that way for any reason. I would feel better knowing that it was in place. Ruth Jordan Wong whillp@kih.net
This was sent to me by Bettie Morrow of Bethel Park. This is just a "pot of gold" for my genealogy file, that I will share it here. The credit goes to Bettie for looking it up for me! from Citizens Library in Washington . . . Washington Reporter, Washington PA - Last Edition Wednesday 28 Jul 1897, front page Robt. Dunn Sr., died of stomach trouble at the residence of his son-in-law J. B. McClure, at Wyland, Wednesday morning. The funeral will take place Thursday at 1 o'clock, the interment to be in the Oak Spring Cemetery, at Canonsburg. Mr. Dunn was a native of County Down, Ireland, having emigrated to this country in 1847, just 50 years ago. Nearly all his life in America was spent in the neighborhood where his death has occurred. He was an excellent neighbor, a kind and loving father and a most consistent Christian gentleman. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church at Thomas, in the welfare of which he took a great interest. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. J. B. McClure, Mrs. Daniel Duncan, Mrs. J. D. Pease; and by three sons, John, James and Robt. Jr. Mrs. W. W. McClure, a daughter, preceded him in death a short time ago. Another daughter and his wife died some years ago. Mr. Dunn was in his 81st year.
I have had a chance to research the stacks of old tombstones that I spotted in the fenced in yard near Bentleyville, believing they may have come from the old Bentleyville cemetery. Although there are some that are quite old, I was currious to find why some of the stones had dates in the 1960's and later (one was 1980). Turns out that the land is being used by one of the tombstone companies, and the stone in question were either "mistakes", "rejects" or "trade ins" (people getting new stones to replace old ones). I guess there may be some clues there, but they have no records as to what cemetery the stones were in , or intended for! Sorry for the false alarm. Perhaps I should have checked it out before opening my mouth (or my email program!!) -- Thanks Mike Donaldson, Bentleyville, PA (mdonald4@bentcom.net) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mon Valley History and Genealogy Website: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pamonval/ Mon Valley: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow: http://www.geocities.com/mdonald318/ My family gedcom: http://www.my-ged.com/donldson ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Listowner of: Monongahela River Valley of Penna Rootsweb mailing list: PAMONVAL-L@rootsweb.com - Mail mode PAMONVAL-D@rootsweb.com - Digest mode Bieneman / Bienemann Rootsweb Mailing list Bienemann-L@rootsweb.com - Mail Mode Bienemann-D@rootsweb.com - Digest mode
I am interested in finding any recorded info on a Phineas Killum ( var. spellings) who was in this area from 1770s to around 1805. Deeds show he owned land in both the Dunkard Creek and in what is now Greene Co, PA areas. Can anyone check the 1790 census or other records that may help.... land, probate, tax, marriage etc? Phineas probably had a son named Asa born in this area who went on to Hardin Co, KY but no other connection has been found.... wife, other children, parents ????? This Phineas may be the son of Zadock who was in the Pike Co, PA area in the late 1700s. Zadock had other sons including Moses, Ephriam, Silas, and John that do show up in census records for Pike Co, PA , but no info is known to exist for his son Phineas who may be the one that owned land in Monongalia co, VA and Greene Co, PA. I know this is confusing but it is all I know at this time. Any help, comments, suggestions will be appreciated. R. Kellems

The cemetery I have been searching for is on the 1876 map of Bentleyville as illustrated in the Dartnell book. It was back of the Mitchell property on Main St., between the schoolhouse and the Taylor property. In 1889, Isaac Mitchell wrote in his will, "The lot in Bentleysville is not to be sold but held in trust for a burying ground." There is now no indication of a graveyard, and it is partly paved over. Various people have told me that the stones had been stolen, beginning in the 1920s, and used for doorsteps or hearth stones over the years. It is possible that Hannah Burt Mitchell and Mary Burt Mitchell, both died 31 Dec. 1823, may be buried there. Mike, if you or anyone finds any Mitchell stones, I would be very grateful to hear about it. Lynne Mayer __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hello all... A while back there was some discussion of a missing cemetery in Bentleyville. It was believed to be near what is now the Main Street extention, and may have been removed to make room for developments. Last night I was driving on Pittsburgh Rd (Rt. 917) and noticed what looked like an old monument. I turned around and drove by again and noticed that there are numerous markers, stones and other older looking monuments, stacked on top of each other (possibly 25 or so that I could see from the car), inside a fence that is mostly an area that appears to be used for storage of some construction items (pipes, etc.) I've been past this place a hundred times but never noticed them before, which leads me to believe that they have recently been stacked there, or the weeds around them have been cut down. My plan is to at least get close enough to read a few names, and to try and track down who manages the site. There is no sign. I will attempt to find out where these stones came from, and will keep you informed. If anyone else has any information, I know there are some on the lists that would be interested. -- Thanks Mike Donaldson, Bentleyville, PA (mdonald4@bentcom.net) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mon Valley History and Genealogy Website: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pamonval/ Mon Valley: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow: http://www.geocities.com/mdonald318/ My family gedcom: http://www.my-ged.com/donldson ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Listowner of: Monongahela River Valley of Penna Rootsweb mailing list: PAMONVAL-L@rootsweb.com - Mail mode PAMONVAL-D@rootsweb.com - Digest mode Bieneman / Bienemann Rootsweb Mailing list Bienemann-L@rootsweb.com - Mail Mode Bienemann-D@rootsweb.com - Digest mode

This list includes a few folks that are in my databases, and many that I have seen on this list. The cemetery in question is now in the process of being preserved as a monument to our ancestors. I'm looking for an OLD obituary. I don't know if one exists or not, but I'd like to try to find out if possible. Robert DUNN, b. bef. 28 Jul 1816 in Ireland, d. 28 Jul 1897 in North Strabane Twp., supposedly buried in Oak Spring Cemetery, and Agnes(s) Dixon DUNN, b. aft 19 Sep 1826 in Ireland, d. 19 Sept 1876 most likely in North Strabane Twp., probably also buried in Oak Spring Cemetery. Would anyone have a way to find out if there is an obituary on either one of these, and might be able to scan it, and send to me? Very much appreciated, any info available! Thank you, Robert D. I am looking for information on the Abbott Family who lived in Fayette and Washington Counties, Pennsylvania. In working through some records and a time line recently, I found a Benjamin Abbet living in Monongalia County VA in the 1790 census. I find him in the 1800 census in Jefferson Township, Greene County, PA, along with a Benjamin Abbet, Jr. I also find a Jeremiah Abbot living in Redstone, Fayette County, PA. In searching history, I find that in 1783, the northeast corner of Monongalia became Fayette County, PA, and in 1796, the northwest corner of Monongalia that was Washington County, PA became Greene County, PA. So, actually these people were living in the same place? Information from another researcher indicates that Benjamin Sr. and Jr. moved on to Ohio about 1805. Jeremiah remains in Washington Township, Fayette County through the 1810, 1820, 1830 and 1840 census'. If anyone has any early records for Monongalia County, VA or Greene County, PA, can you please check them for any evidence of the Abbott family, found spelled a variety of different ways (Abbott, Abbot, Abbett, Abet, etc.). I would appreciate the look-ups and if you could please let me know what source you looked in even if you don't find them. I am considering ordering some publications on Monongalia County, VA and would love to eliminate the ones that they are not in. Thank you in advance for the help. Tammy Knipp
