I have a Charity CHEESEMAN who > married a John Gaston in 1760 in Monmouth Co New Jersey and came to > Washington county. I told you I remembered something about this -- well, I haven't run across my copy of that section of the Peters Creek Watershed history -- but did run into the bio of Joseph Moore CURRY (from Beers or perhaps Crumrine). "In 1845 the subject of this sketch (Joseph Moore Curry) was married to Mary J, the daughter of Robert Campbell. In 1852 he purchased a tract of land one mile below Finleyville, from J S Gaston, and there built a large store, mansion house, a number of tenant houses and shops, thus founding the town of Curryville, which he afterward had changed to Gastonville, in honor of the original landholder." Now when I find the other reference I'll let you know. Russ

    1. [PAMONVAL] HORN Book by Ed Porter
    2. I was in contact with Ed on Friday, and he says he has plenty of books left, and they are available for $60 each, including postage/packaging. He can be reached at edtporter@earthlink.net, or send your payment to him at 7302 Onyx Dr. S.W., Lakewood, WA 98498-6435. He also needs you address and phone number. He asked me to go ahead and post this, since he has quite a number of books left. I paid $63 for mine, with postage, and it's probably one of the best genealogy investments I've ever made, especially since I'm a HORN decendent. The book primarily covers Christopher HORN, but has some pages and descendents of Christopher's brothers, John & Hardtman. The book is entitled "The Horns of Colonial Pennsylvania, 1740-1999 ..... Their descendants in North America and some of their related Families". There is gravesite and cemetery information, it's 8½"x11", and two inches thick, 795 pages of information (my family is on pg. 795, having been submitted just before going to the printers). Ed Porter has written other books as well, that are shown on Page 811 of the book. It's a very worthwhile book, especially if you have HORN roots! Robert D. 1. [PAMONVAL] Horseshoe Bottom Cemetery
    2. Hi all, I spent last week with family in Charleroi, PA and visited the California Historical Society as well as the Washington Co. Historical Society. I found some pictures of my grandfather taken in 1911 and a group picture of the members of the Phillipsburg Presbyterian Church about the same year. If any of you get a chance to visit the area, the CA Historical society is a MUST. They have lots of unidentified old pictures and others that have been named. I also got a copy of the actual lot owners of the old California (Union) cemetery and was surprised when the lot owners names varied from those actually buried there. I can do look ups. The Washington Co. Historical society was interesting too, I bought a book called "The Centennial Celebration of the Organization of Washington Co. PA 1781 to 1881" printed & published by E. E. Crumrine in 1881 for $5.00. They recently found a couple of forgotten boxes of these books stored in a closet in the Lemoyne House, so there are plenty left. If you want to buy one you can call 724-222-6330 or write to the Historical Society at 49 East Maiden St. Washington PA. 15301. Their website is www.wchspa.org. I can do lookups in this book also. And saving the best part for last, I finally found the Horseshoe Bottom cemetery! For the last several years I've looked for this cemetery while on my annual Easter visit and no one I asked knew where it was. It was actually by accident my cousin & I found it. We were cemetery hunting and saw an old one up on an embankment next to some houses so we pulled off of the highway and climbed the embankment. I nearly fell off the embankment when I saw the plack "Horseshoe Bottom Presbyterian Church" founded here in 1785." The only stones left that are still standing and readable are: Thomas Wells born in Coleraine Ire and died 1 May 1813, age 71 yrs Wm. F. Blythe died 3 Nov 1864 Alexandria, VA age 18 yrs. He was in Co.E. 6th Heavy Duty, 212th PA Regt. Wm. Blythe born 22 Feb 1800 died 31 Jan 1893 Mary S. Blythe born 1812 died 23 Sept 1865 age 53 yrs, wife of Wm. The above are in a fenced area. Simeon Willson (he is listed as Simon in the Old & New Monongahela book) born near Enniskillen Ire, died 7 Feb 1864 age 76 yrs Rebecca Willson died 17 Feb 1868 age 66 yrs, wife of Simeon Wm Wilson born near Enniskillen Ire in 1795 died 19 June 1868 age 78 yrs Eliza Jane (Wilson) Colvin died 17 Apr 1870 age 34 yrs, wife of Enoch Colvin John Wilson born near Enniskillen Ire, died 23/27 Aug 1842 age 80 yrs The only known Rev War Soldier buried there is Pvt Michael Power & His wife Hannah. I have some info from the CA Historical Society on Michael & his wife Hanna if anyone is connected to them. Sorry this is such a long e-mail but I was excited about the finds and had to share them with you all. Patricia Ewing-Norfolk, VA. 1. [PAMONVAL] [Pafayett-L] CROW - JOHNSTON - GREGG...Ireland?
    2. Lucinda C. Durbin
    3. Hello, All, If there is anyone on the list that can give me any help on this, I'd appreciate it very much...here goes: In my records, I have my great-great-great-grandmother on my mother's side as Margaret Gregg b. Abt 1752, Londonderry, Ireland. D. 10 Dec 1852. Her husband was Lawrence Crow, b. abt. 1748 Londonderry, Ireland, d. Mar. 1793. They settled on what was called "Crow's Egg" which was "Patented" to him in 1785. Again, according to the information I've obtained through several sources including records at the Citizens Library in Washington, PA, and from other Crow researchers, this couple had nine children, though there is a discrepancy in Margaret's birthdate in which some people have it as 1752 and others as 1760 -- makes a BIG difference in the children's parentage. Here is my problem/curious circumstance...today, while going through some more of the boxes of my mother's things from storage, my husband and I found seven linen napkins, obviously old, with two pieces of paper folded into them. On reading them, I'm more bewildered than before about "Margaret" and her name and her origin. One handwritten note says: "Irene CHALFANT FRYE's first napkins -- She and her sister Ruth made them before her marriage to John H. FRYE. The linen was a sheet, woven in County Down, Ireland by Margaret JOHNSTON, great-grandmother of Irene C. Her husband's name is nit recalled by Ruth CHALFANT. The JOHNSTONs had 8 children die in Ireland -- 4 children lived after their emigration to U. S." My records show only nine children born to the couple. The other note is typed by Price G. FRYE, daughter of John Hamilton FRYE and Irene Jane CHALFANT FRYE. Cousin Price did a lot of research into the family, but there are definitely some errors on the "tree" that she constructed back in the late 1940s-early 1950s period. This is what she had to say: " This is one (it was fastened to one of the napkins) of a set of napkins made by Irene Chalfant before her marriage to John H. Frye. She was assisted by her sister Ruth. The linen was a sheet, woven in County Down Ireland by Margaret, Crow, great grandmother of Irene Chalfant and wife of Lawrence Crow. There were 12 napkins in the set and i have seven of them. Price G. Frye, great, great, grand daughter of Margaret Crow who wove the linen." Now, the second note doesn't really have any new information in it, but the first one, in which Margaret // CROW is named JOHNSTON instead of GREGG is very puzzling to me. I'm hoping that someone on the list might have something definitive about this that would let me know a bit more about Margaret GREGG/JOHNSTON? CROW. IF there is a JOHNSTON connection with Lawrence CROW's wife, I wonder if it connects in some way with Jane JOHNSON, daughter of James JOHNSTON and Sidney ???, who married Lawrence and Margaret's son William CROW and who was the mother of my "Lucinda" great-grandmother. HELP!!!! (Ain't genealogy grand?) Sincerely, Cindy Lucinda Cunningham Durbin <http://www.paperdolls.org>
