I was wondering if anyone on the this list might be able to give me any help or advice on finding further information on my ancestor James Armstrong. My James joined the 2d Pennsylvania Battalion as Regt. Quartermaster, 20 Feb. 1776. He rose rapidly through the ranks; 2d Lt.. 21 May 1776, 1st Lt.. 2d Cav. in Lt. Col. Henry "Light Horse Harry" Lee's Legion 1 Apr. 1777, Capt.. 1 Jan 1779. Taken prisoner at Dorchester, SC 13 Dec. 1781 and was prisoner at the end of the war. After the war he settled in Georgia and died there about 1800. There is evidence from Georgia, which I am not sure is reliable, that he was born about 1728. I suspect that there may have been a connection to the Lee family which preceded the Revolutionary War, as he named my 3ggf Ludwell Armstrong; "Ludwell" being a frequently used given name in the Lee family, and Ludwell Armstrong was born prior to the Revolutionary War. It was tracing potential links to the Lee family that led me to the Armstrongs of Greene County, PA. Henry Lee's grandfather (also named Henry) was first president of the Ohio Company, which sent the first settlers into the Greene County, Pa. area. I found a book the "Horne Papers" that stated that John and Robert Armstrong were among the first 63 of Christopher Gist's original settlers into the Greene County area: The book "The Horn Papers" by W.F. Horn, a historical book about early settlers of Western Pennsylvania, describes the following Armstrong family: "John and Robert Armstrong, sons of James and Sarah Armstrong, of Scotch-Irish descent, were born in New Jersey. In 1744, they settled in Frederick County, Maryland. After the close of hostilities, in the French and Indian War, these brothers joined Christopher Gist's Company, and settled on the east side of the Monongehela River in 1763. In April 1766, they removed to the west side of the river. John Armstrong, John Swan, his brother-in-law, and Henry Van Meter erected Fort Swan and Van Meter on the site of the Delaware Indian Village.... (The areas mentioned on the east and west sides of the Monongehela are in present day Fayette and Greene Counties, Pennsylvania, respectively.) ...Near the home of Andrew Jackson Young whose wife was a great-granddaughter of John Armstrong who settled there in 1766. Robert Armstrong died at the fort in 1791 and was buried at the homestead. Joseph Armstrong, another brother, lived here at the fort after the close of the Revolutionary War in which he served for four years. He died in 1795 and was buried in the Armstrong graveyard." This seems to be the same John Armstrong described later in the book: "John Armstrong was born in Virginia in 1734. He married Sarah Kenedy, a sister of Alice Kenedy, the wife of Col. William Crawford (Monongahela Bill Crawford.) He was one of Christopher Gist's first sixty-three settlers east of the Monongahela River in 1763. In 1766, he settled near the west side of the river where he tomahawked seven hundred sixty two acres of land, only part of which was patented in 1785. With Jesse Van Meter and John Swan, he erected Fort Van Meter in May and June 1766. In May 1767, these men erected Fort Armstrong. In 1797, John Armstrong gave this land and fort to his youngest son, William, who was born in 1781. Some historians recorded that Abraham Armstrong, the eldest son of John and Sarah Armstrong, was the first white child born in the area, but this is an error....." I obviously suspect that my James is related to this family in some way, but I have not been able so far to find a record of a James that fits the bill. I would very much appreciate any help or suggestions that you might be able to offer.
Does anyone on the list know if the Belle Vernon Baptist Church has a Web Site or an Email address? I need to get some dates from the church. Thank you, Marilyn (Jenkins) Prinzing, Lake Co. IL; marjenp@mindspring.com.
Is anyone researching these families? Trying to determine if the JUSTICE family is connected to my KELLY family. Daniel Kelly lived in Cross Creek Twp., Washington Co., PA in 1790, Brooke Co., (W)VA 1800, 1820-1831 Union Twp., Harrison Co., OH. He died 1831 in Union Twp., Harrison Co., OH. His son Jonathan Kelly, b. 1791 Cross Creek Twp., Washington Co., PA named his eldest son Justice Kelly. However Jonathan Kelly's wife was Sarah KERRIGAN. I've yet to find Sarah's parents unless they were actuallly KERNAGHANs, she could possibly be the d/o Joseph Kernaghan who died 2/21/1852 Harrison Co., OH. Thanks for any clues! During World War II people who had someone in the service put banners in the windows of their homes. They had a star on them for the number of those serving. What was the difference between the banners of those alive and those who died? Dee
OOOps... Before I get flooded with emails, I noticed a "stack" of obits that were submitted and that I somehow left out of the latest Vol (#5) of Online Obits. I am working on adding them to the site. I did a little math. Since there are about 240 folks on this mailing list. If they would each submit ONE obit per month, We would have 2,880 obits in a years time. If ONE obit per week were submitted by each, there would be 12,480 obits by this time next year! ...just a thought! -- Thanks Mike Donaldson, Bentleyville, PA (mdonald4@bentcom.net) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mon Valley History and Genealogy Website: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pamonval/ Mon Valley: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow: http://www.geocities.com/mdonald318/ My family gedcom: http://www.my-ged.com/donldson ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Listowner of: Monongahela River Valley of Penna Rootsweb mailing list: PAMONVAL-L@rootsweb.com - Mail mode PAMONVAL-D@rootsweb.com - Digest mode Bieneman / Bienemann Rootsweb Mailing list Bienemann-L@rootsweb.com - Mail Mode Bienemann-D@rootsweb.com - Digest mode

HELP!!! On the marriage license the name is Lisey, on her tombstone, it's spelt Lisyj, on his tombstone it's spelt Lisi. The Americanized version that we go by is Lacey. Joseph Lisey married Kati Michoylo June 10, 1913 in Brownsville, Fayette Co., PA. His wife died May 6, 1913 and her husband died Dec. 26, 1912, I believe in the same town. They each had children and together they had Mike Lacey, born June 7, 1916. His older brother that remained in the area was Peter Lacey. I have not been able to find them in the census. Can anyone help me find more info on this family? Thank you, Jennifer Lacey
Yes, Eva. The name was spelled Garlick on two separate obits for John. In fact, when I checked my grandfather, Robert L. Jenkins' Death Certificate, I found that Ida Garlick had given the information on him. I thought Ida Garlick was some woman that my errant grandfather had taken up with. Now, I know that was his sister. Marilyn ----- Original Message ----- From: "Eva Dayle Zippay" <evadayle@yahoo.com> To: <PAMONVAL-L@rootsweb.com> : Marilyn, : : Are you sure the name was GARLICK? I am so sorry if the virus that I became a victum of, due to my own stupidity, affected any of you on the Lists. It was awful to sit here and watch it attach itself to everyone sending in email and go back to them with my name on it...and being helpless to do anything. I hope no one on the Lists opened that attachment! It was a stubborn virus to get rid of. And I have Windows ME which made it worse because they use backup files....double the work. But my wonderful nephew helped me through it for two days, and supposedly I have a wonderful anti-virus program to keep this from happening again. Great to be back to normal! Again, please accept my apologies.....I am not as naive as I was three days ago! Becky Pauley Wash., Pa.
