    1. [PAMONVAL] J. D. PEASE, in 1915
    2. re: Washington County Farm Directory, 1915, North Strabane Twp. A cousin of mine looked in this book many years ago, and found that J. D. PEASE (John Dickson PEASE), Box 35, Wylandville, Highway 70, was a Principal in a High School at the time (1915). Would anybody be able to find out what school it was, and if that school might still be around, or if any records for the school still exist? Also, my grandmother, Grace Dickson PEASE (Mollenauer) was a teacher at the time, and very possibly in the same school as her father. Anyone have any way I can find out more? Thanks, Robert Dickson MOLLENAUER, Jr. Ridgecrest, CA "Gateway to Death Valley National Park" (in the middle of nowhere).

Phillips Cemetery Privilege $5.00 George J. Long Funeral $62.00 S.W Croft Funeral Expenses $9.00 Leman Roley Laborer Does anyone on the list recognize the above men? My focus here is to discern exactly where Peter Shevlin might have been buried or would there be any funeral records so that we can confirm when Peter Shevlin died. I think that the Leman Roley listed was actually Lemon Roley the oldest son of Hulda Anne Howe. Her second husband was Peter Shevlin. Thank you, Marilyn Prinzing.

    1. [PAMONVAL] William How(e),Washington Co./Whisky Rebellion
    2. Marilyn Prinzing
    3. Hello, I am wondering if someone can clear up just where in the Colonies William Howe lived prior to his coming to SW PA with Washington's troops to help put down the Whisky Rebellion. This is the information that I have: The Great Whisky Rebellion, Rebels With a Cause, by Helene Smith, pages 55 and 56. "Major General Daniel Morgan's Winter Encampment Site, Allegheny County: When Washington recalled the army of occupation consisting of four battalions, one each from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and New Jersey, following their march to southwestern Pennsylvania, Morgan's troops were chosen to stay behind and to keep order during the fall and winter aftermath." From: History of Washington County, Pennsylvania. I am not sure of the author since this was given by my cousin; but, it most likely is from Beers, Crummrine, or I think McFarland. "William Howe was an Englishman. He cam to the West with the United States troops at the time of the Whiskey insurrection, and here remained. He married Margaret Jackman, on the 30th of March, 1796. He took out a warrant for a tract, which was surveyed to him the 5th of September following as "Malabar", containing three hundred and twenty acres. It was situated on the bank of the river adjoining lands of Robert and henry Jackman, and the heirs of Laurence and John Crow. Mr. Howe lived here until his death and was buried in what is known as the Howe Cemetery. The Howe Church was erected on his farm. He and his wife were prominent in the early history of Methodism in this section and were foremost in the establishment of this church. The date of his death has not been found. His widow Elizabeth Howe died March 16, 1834, at the age of sixty-two years. They had fourteen children who are now all dead. Two went to Virginia, two emigrated to Illinois; Alexander and Samuel remained in this country. The former married Elizabeth Rush. William Howe, Esq. of California, PA is their son. Samuel married Lydia Morrell, Johnson Howe, a son emigrated to Illinois. Lydia Riggs now living in the township and eighty years of age is a granddaughter of William Howe" Note: William had two children to Margaret Jackman and 14 to Elizabeth Clark. I need to learn from which state William Howe was living before he came to SW PA to put down the Whisky Rebellion. I suspect that he may have been from Virginia; but, cannot prove it at the moment. Thank you for any help I can get. Marilyn; Lake Co., IL; marjenp@mindspring.com.

    3. I just received the Death Certificate for Edith (West) Jenkins of Charleroi who died in 1967. Edith's parents were William Henry West and Sarah Elizabeth Soles. The person giving the information was Edith's daughter, Ruth Lauderback who, in 1967, lived at 308 Washington Avenue, Charleroi, Pa. Is there anyone on the list who has any information on Ruth or had relatives living in the same general area who might know what happened to Ruth or her family? I really need to make a contact with a descendant of John Jenkins and Edith (West) Jenkins. I have Emailed the Presbyterian Church of Charleroi to learn if any their descendants still go to the church; but, have heard nothing yet. Thank you, Marilyn(Jenkins) Prinzing; Lake Co., IL; marjenp@mindspring.com.

PA. was one of the fortunate states whereby the special census of Civil War Veterans or their widows were recorded and preserved. Western PA. is very well covered in this and the NARA microfilms are available; HOWEVER there is no index to it, so if you know where your relative was living at the time, it narrows things down; otherwise, you have to go, county by county.     3. Thanks, Cora, for the info on western PA civil war vets or their widows! Since I'm not in PA, nor am I in DC (NARA), could this be accomplished through inter-library loans, etc.? And if so, would the records be at NARA AND somewhere in western PA? I would think others of us out of the area would appreciate knowing how we can about getting the records. I use the LDS library a lot and order films, but I don't believe I ever saw anything about the 1890 census records of these individuals. I've just heard others "talk" about how some states/cities had their own records around that timeframe, and info could be "recreated" in a "back-door" kind of way. Thanks!     3. Ron, Unless there are still some state records or you can piece information together, along with directories and such, you won't find much of the 1890 census -- it was lost because of a fire and events that followed. There is a very interesting article in the NARA records about the real tragedy of the 1890 census fate that some of you might enjoy. http://www.nara.gov/publications/prologue/1890cen1.html (Note: If your e-mail program supports hypertext links, the URL will be "clickable" and will launch the web site in your browser.     1. [PAMONVAL] HORN; HORNE; GRACE;
    2. Rod Horn
    3. I am new to your list. I am looking for ancestry information about my GGfather, Captain B. F. (Benjamin Franklin) Horn, b. 1827-1830 at Wheeling, VA (now W.VA.). Later federal census information says both of his parents were born in PA. No other early information is available. I believe Capt. B. F. Horn was raised on a river / rivers. His obituary in December 1900 states: "He was promoted to Captain & Pilot on the Ohio River in 1855". It also states: "He worked the southern rivers during the Civil War". He was very young to be promoted to Captain & Pilot at 25 - 27 years old??? but maybe possible if his entire life had been spent on the rivers. I have searched long and hard for a connection in the "The Horns of Colonial Penn", written by Edward T. Porter. I cannot find any connection. I have reason to believe, my Horn ancestors were English or Scottish. (my grandfather told me,"the Horn / Horne name can be German or English - we are definitely English") This is possibly why I am not able to connect to the families set out in Mr. Porter's book. I am told there were / are Horns in an area south of Pittsburgh, along the Monongahela River and that they may have been of English Ancestry. I understand this area includes Washington County, PA which is also home country for many Horns of German ancestry (from Ed Porter's book). I have the whereabouts of Captain B. F. Horn semi-captured on the Missouri River from 1866 as "Captain Of The Steamship Emilie" found in the City Directory of Leavenworth, KS. In 1879 He was Captain of the "Union" & the "Denver" at Bismarck, now ND. In 1880 He was Captain of the "Last Chance" that docked at LeBeau, SD (above Pierre, SD). From 1881 to 1896 He was Captain of the Ferry Boat "Jim Leighton" that traveled between Pierre and Fort Pierre, SD. In 1896 1899 He was Captain of the "Portus B. Weare" on the Yukon River during the Gold Rush Days in the Yukon. H died in December 1900 at Pierre, SD of "lung fever". I will certainly appreciate any clues that surface. Thank you. 3. Does anyone have access to the 1800 census? I would appreciate a look up for Daniel Kelly. In 1790 he was listed as HOH in Cross Creek Twp., Washington Co., PA. He might not even still be in Washington Co., PA, he might be in Brooke Co., (W)VA as he owned land there. Trying to narrow down an approximate birth date. Thanks, Cindy

    1. [PAMONVAL] Settlements of Estate/Wills
    2. Ellen Ballas
    3. Dear Listers & especially Newbies to research, This is a little reminder that can mean a whole lot to those new at searching in any register of wills office. When you obtain a will for your ancestor that is only part of the search. One needs to examine all the settlement of estate papers or valuable information may be overlooked. An heir may have been the child of another marriage & named as such in paperwork. This is only 1 of countless possible things you can find out. If the will is very early you may also find that there is some opposition to your seeing the actual paperwork due to the fragile condition of it. Therefore, if you have a clear-cut line, you might not need to go further, but if you have other circumstances in question, an examination of these papers may prove to be very important to you. This is also why it sometimes takes actually visiting the courthouse or having someone else do it for you.
