    1. [PAMONVAL] Krepps / Frost / Todd connections
    2. Hi All.. Trying to connect a Mary Ann FROST to the right parents. Mary A. was the second (of three) wife of James L. KREPPS. They lived in Allenport, Washington Co. I found a will of Susan (Frost) TODD, also of Allenport, who died Oct. 28, 1892, that gives the following family clues: Brother: Isaiah Frost who had two daughters; Linda and Jennie. Niece: Mary A. Krepps This leads me to think that Mary's father, also a brother of Susan had died prior to this. Susan's husband was Dr. Ostrander Todd, who died in 1881. The Todds had an adopted daughter also by the name of Mary A. (Later Mrs. William BLACK) Attention FROST researchers. The above info was found in a very well done book by Charles Frost, Descendants of Josiah Frost (Frostburg Maryland) found at the Citizens Library, Washington. Unfortunately, although Mary Krepps was mentioned in the will of Susan Todd which was reproduced in the book, She was not found in the charts or any other place in the book!! James L. Krepps' (1836 -1920) wives: #1. Lucinda DONALDSON (1842-1877) 5 children < My great grand aunt. #2. Mary A. Frost (1835-1893) 0 children #3. 1. [PAMONVAL] George Barringer, PA
    2. Marilyn Prinzing
    3. Does anyone on the list have a George Barringer b. 1831, who enlisted in Company D., 79th PA Cavalry in the Civil War? He enlisted on Sept. 9, 1861, at Monongahela, PA, which was two days after my g,grandfather William Barringer and his brother, John, had enlisted in Co. D, 79th Cavalry. For the longest time I thought the George Barringer above was my g,g,grandfather, George Barringer until I got the Military Service Civil War Record for this George and saw his age listed as 31 in 1861. This George Barringer was captured by the Confederates at Nolinsville, Tenn. and remained a prisoner for about a year. He either was released or escaped. I get the feeling that he and a few others escaped. The War Department sent him to a hospital in Murphysboro, Tenn for several months. Finally, on Sept 5, 1863, he was transferred to the Invalid Corp. by the order of the War Department. I am awaiting the rest of his record which will pick up once he was in the Veteran's Invalid Corp. I am also awaiting his Pension Records. I think that this George b. 1831, could possibly be a son of my George Barringer and Mary Shallenberger. Would appreciate hearing from anyone who might have more info on this man. Thank you, Marilyn(Jenkins) Prinzing; Lake Co., IL; marjenp@mindspring.com.

    1. [PAMONVAL] Land & probate Records
    2. Cindy Owens
    3. Julia, Thank you so much for the resources, I need all the help I can get! I'm at a real concrete wall on my ancestor John Courtright. He lived in the OH Valley area from c1799 to 1830: 1799-1818 various townships in Beaver Co., PA, never taxed for land only 1 cow! I have looked through the Beaver land records & he's not mentioned. 1820 Columbiana Co., OH census , according to several co. histories he moved there in 1818. I've looked through these land records as well, nothing. 1830 Smithfield twp., Jefferson Co., OH is when he last appears on the census. I haven't found an older man living in the 1840 census of his children so "assume" he died 1831-1840. I've had several people do look ups for me in the Jeff. land/probate records, nothing. Where else should I look? He left 10 children, the youngest 2 were minors when he died, IF he died 1831-1840. I feel that his land was somewhere in the Short Creek Twp., Harrison & Smithfield Twp., Jefferson area. That's where his kids were concentrated for a time after his death. With so many Courtrights in the area for generations it baffles me that none of them left a will? I recently received death certificates for about 20 or so of them in the OH Valley area alone! I can connect all except one to my John Courtright. One more question: I know John's son James died 1834 of cholera in Beaver Co., PA as it's in an old newspaper article . I'm assuming it was a problem on the west side of the river as well. Do you know of any lists of cholera deaths? Thanks for letting me ramble! 3. Hello Mike, I was looking for information on the family of Solomon Krepps who m Cassandra Speers born 1796 in Speers, PA next door to Allenport, PA.. They had a son Solomon Speers Krepps who m a Nancy Speers (I don't know her lineage). Do you have anything on this Krepps line and how is it related to your James L. Krepps and Mary Ann Frost. What does the L stand for in James's middle name. Is it Latta? Cassandra's brother John Speers born 1798 m a Mary Latta of the same area and the chance that the L stands for Latta is very good if James is their son. 1. [PAMONVAL] McCullum, James, b. 1761 Redstone Old Fort
    2. Beth J
    3. Hi listers, I am desparately hoping someone can give me possible connections or good resources for my early PA ancestor. He is well-recorded in KY, but can find no PA records on him. Any info or advice welcome!! pg 23, Two Centuries In Elizabethtown and Hardin Co, KY: McCullum, James- 230579 Virginia 3-22-1834 (72) pg 28 (same source): Chapter A-13: A Revoluntionary Ancestor: James McCullum of "Williamson's Spies The McCullum Family, while not numerous, is well known in Hardin County. Many of themwere established years ago in the Cedar Creek community, and some descending from the above James McCullum, who came to Hardin County by way of Nelson County following the War for Independence. In applying for pension allowed for his war service, James McCullum made statements before Judge Armistead H. Churchill on Mar 22, 1833 in which he stated that he was seventy-three years of age on Aug 25 of the previous year; also that he entered the service of the United States around the first of March 1781 under Colonel David Williamson, Captain Ezekiel Rose, Lieutenant Thomas Hill and Ensign Benjamin Whetsell (or a name so prounounced). He entered service for the term of nine months and in the year 1782, again entered the service for a like term and again in 1783, the same and under the same officers. He received discharges at the end of each period of service. All were lost when his boat was sunk at Wheeling at some date following the end of the war. The regiment or troop of spies to which he belonged for the sake of distinction was called and known by the name of :"Williamson's Spies." When he first entered the service the Colonel divided the troop of spies into small divisions and they were stationed at various posts. He and three others were stationed at Bell's Fort on Beech (or Brush) Creek, in the State of Pennsylvania. During his second term of service he and his three comrades were stationed at Atkinson's Fort, on the head waters of TenMile Creek. Once in each month the different divisions were ordered to meet Colonel Williamson at the Mouth of Wheeling to report to him. During McCullum's second term of service the small divisions were concentrated and marched to the Sandusky plains where they were engaged in the battle at that place, known as "Crawford's Defeat." He stated he knew General Crawford at the battle, also Colonel Campbell, Captain Benson and a Captain Williamson, a brother of Colonel Williamson, his commander. Another officer at Crawford's defeat was Colonel Hardin and a Captain Joseph Bean, who like Captain Rose, under whom McCullum served, was wounded. Following the battle, the spies were returned to their stations. His last term of service was spent at Atkinson's (Atkerson's) Fort. James McCullum's Statement before Judge Chuchill was witnessed by Jacob Enlow and Jacob Swank, both citizens of Hardin County, the first the well-known pioneer preacher. On the 3rd ofJuly 1833, James McCullum made an amended declaration to his application for pension, made before John Morris, a justice of the peace in Hardin County. In that amended declaration, McCullum furnished considerable information: 1. That he was born on the Monongahela (river) area near Redstone Old Fort in Pennsylvania in 1761. 2. He had a record of his age but it was destroyed when his boat was sunk at Wheeling. 3. He was living near Redstone Old Fort when he was called into service. He moved from that county (Fayette?) after the Revolution to Nelson County, Ky and from Nelson County he moved to Hardin County, where he then resided. 4. He turned out a volunteer and served all three time as such. 5. He stated there wee no regular officers with the company. Col. David Williamson and Captain E. Rose were militia officers, who commanded the company. He was a spy on Brush Creek at Bell Fort for the first nine months. The next nine months he served as a spy on the Head of Ten Mile Creek at George Akerson's Fort--and the next nine months at the same place. 6. He received a discharge from Col. David Williamson, which he also lost in the ruin of his boat. he never recieved any commissions. 7. He stated that Jacob Enlow and Jacob Swank were residents in his neighborhood and could certify as to his veracity and also to his reputation as a Revoluntionary soldier. On November 9, 1833, James McCullum's name was entered on the pension roll for Kentucky agency at the rate of $60.00 per annum. A copy of the certificate was ordered sent to Washington Whitaker at Elizabethtown, Kentucky who was apparently McCullum's agent." pg 15 (same source): An article about the history of Fayette County, Pa & people who came to Ky from there: Last paragraph of a 3 pg article: "Today Fayette County has a diversification of industry and agriculture. The waters of the Yougheogheney, the Monongahela, Redstone Creek, Dunlap Creek, George'sCreek, Jacob's Creek, Mountain Creek and the other streams familiar to the sturdy pioneers still flow as they did two centuries ago. No longer do the militiamen, such as James McCullum, stand watch on Ten-Mile Creek, on guard against possible Indian marauders. The Indians have long since gone and the pioneer families sleep through eternity somewhere in the land they settled and defended so long ago." Thanks in advance, Beth Abel Jones

    3. Beth, Do you know if your James McCullum took part in the Whiskey Rebellion? That could possibly be part of the reason why he went to Kentucky. I have a pension application for RW service for Daniel Hamilton of Washington Co. Pa. and later Nicholas Co. Ky. Although his pension does not state he was in a "spy company" his duties involved spying, and he was also with Col. Crawford in Sandusky. I also recognized many of the officer's names you listed as being in Daniel's pension application. Daniel was heavily involved in the Whiskey Rebellion, and before that served as a ranger on the frontier at Ryerson Station, now Greene Co., Pa. Just a thought--no real information, unfortunately. 3. I'm Helen Truesdell and I am a new member to this site. I'm trying to establish the parentage of Christopher Adams and Nancy Ammons (or Emmons) Adams. I believe they were both born in Virginia c. 1785, and they moved to Williamsburg Pa. in Blair County (or Huntingdon, as it was at that time). Family lore says that their first children were born there. My records show : Sarah, born 1808, Jacob 1810, Elizabeth 1813, George W., 1816, Syrenous 1818 and Jonathon 1821. From Jacob, (my G-G-G-Grandfather) on, the children were born in Greene County, Pa. Does anyone have any information on the Adams, Ammons or Emmons that might connect with my Christopher or Nancy? I have a lot of information on their children that I would be glad to share. Helen

Pick a spelling for alternatives. :>) I haven't been able to connect her to a Clark family in Sussex Co. when they married they were living in Hardwick Twp, which later bacame part of Warren Co. I can trace the Courtrights back to the immigrant in 1663. There were several Clark families around the Minisink area to choose from. John & Mary's first chil was daughter Sarah b. 8/18/1798. Based on the naming practices of the time Mary's mother was most likely Sarah somebody. Lot of help huh?! In 1799 they moved to Washington/Beaver Co., PA. Go figure! What you may have to do [I know because I had to do this for getting a passport] is have 2-3 reliable witness who have known you by your current name swear in front of a lawyer or a notary that you have never used your birth certificate name but that you are that same person! Ask them if they will accept that [the US gov't does for official passports]. Cora

    1. [PAMONVAL] Charleston, WV Birth Certificate
    2. Marilyn Prinzing
    3. Hello, I seem to remember that there was someone on this list who lived in Charleston, WV. If, so, could you please contact me as I am having problems with WV re my Birth Certificate. WV doesn't seem to operate like PA. All I can say folks is that you all should check out your birth certificates and that of your children because those clerks can make mistakes. I have given WV 8 different sources of identification; but, because I use the name my parents gave me and never used the one with the error on my Birth Certificate, WV. won't send the Birth Certificate I ordered or change it. They want proof with records using the wrong name which does not exist as I never used that name. Go figure! Marilyn; Lake Co., IL; marjenp@mindspring.com.
