    3. Hi, Tammy, When I was in Washington County doing research about three years ago, I had the privilege of going to the Mt. Tabor Church and meeting with the caretaker...my Crow cousin Norva Lewis took me there to photograph family tombstones. Edward Abbott was a very helpful, knowledgeable and we enjoyed talking to him. I played the piano there, too, sort of as a tribute to those ancestors who worshipped in that place. :-) It's a lovely little chapel...oh, and we met the woman who was the minister there and at Howe Church, too. She was very nice. It was a productive and inspirational day. Sincerely, Cindy Lucinda Cunningham Durbin <http://www.paperdolls.org>

    1. [PAMONVAL] Which Furlong, Tammy?
    2. Eva Dayle Zippay
    3. Hi Tammy, I don't think I ever found out which Furlong you're descended from. Was it John, Thomas and Cynthia Conaway's last child? Or was it one of Thomas' children by his first marriage? On my research trip last fall I found a late birth certificate for John Furlong, and I was surprised to learn that his middle name was Ross. Surprised because my uncle's (John's nephew) middle name was Ross also. 1. [PAMONVAL] Mt. Tabor Methodist Church
    2. I attended Mt. Tabor Church many times when I spent summers with my grandmother. My mother, grandmother, etc. were all members of the church. My great-aunt, Viola Lecat still attends church there, although I think they alternate service every other Sunday there with Howe Church now. Last I knew, there were about five faithful members who continued to attend the church. They have been talking about closing it for years. My husband and I were married there in 1985, I think we were the last marriage in the church (there may have been one more after our wedding), because the church was so special to my family. Both of my children were baptized there. During the baptismal service for my children, a member, Rosella Thompson said that she thought they were the fifth generation of my family to be baptized there. I know, from attempting research there, that many of the older cemetary records were lost when a caretakers home burnt many years ago. The current cemetary caretaker is Edward Abbott, who lives in Long Branch, a short walk down the hill from the church. I remember several years ago, my Aunt Toby (Viola Lecat) talking about the members trying to get the church recognized as a historical landmark. They were unable because so much had been changed at the church, pews, siding, etc. The following was taken from a book titled "Mount Tabor Methodist Episcopal Church" Fallowfield Township,Washington County, Pennsylvania written in 1982. I found it in the Citizens Library in Washington. It is noted that material used in this book was gathered together by Mrs. Frank (Alice) Stockton over a period of years. This particular information was copied from an original bulletin in the possession of Mrs. Frank Stockton of Coal Center dated Sunday, 13 June 1926: "A Short History of the Church" A society of Methodist folks were banded together in the locality, now known as part of Long Branch Borough, Washington County, Pennsylvania, seventy-six years ago and formed the first congregation to be known henceforth as Mt. Tabor Church. The donors of the ground on which the church now stands and one of the leading families in the enterprise were Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius M. McKenna. A number of the children of this God-living couple still remain in the community, a son D.P. McKenna who was present when the building was dedicated. The committee accepted the name of Mt. Tabor, which was suggested by a good mother of the church. Mrs. Liddie Riggs, long since gone home, but whose children and grandchildren still remain loyal to the faith. The timbers used in building the structure was cut from the grounds surrounding the church site, hauled to a mill, and returned in condition for the structure which was built by Alfred Smallwood for the agreed sum of six hundred and sixty dollars ($660.00) The stone also, used in building the walls were quarried within sight of the church. The building is forty by forty foot square, built thus to better withstand the storms of wind on the high knoll upon which it stands. Many have been the souls born into the Kingdom of God through the fearless preaching of the Gospel Truth between the Sacred Walls of this Temple, by men of God, many long since gone to their reward. It is the mother church of the present Roscoe Methodist Episcopal Church, and many of her sons and daughters have gone forth to help bring in the Kingdom of Christ in many communities. 2. Gary & Vickie Pavelko
    3. Thank you so much for your reply! Andrew Pavelko was born in Rakos, Slovakia and the rest of his family came over in January 1921. On the ship manifest for his wife and daughter he said that they were going to him at Roscoe, PA. That is how I knew to look for him there in the 1920 census. I will go back and look at the families around him. By the time that his son Andrew was born in December 1921, the family had moved to Scott's Run where he had been offered the job of manager of the Coal Company store. I don't know how long he had the store there in Roscoe. Hi, My family has owned a home on Lynn St. in Roscoe since 1895--no one else has ever lived there. I lived there until I was 9. (in the 40s and early 50s.) Lynn St. is only about 3 blocks long, and is the last street before the river--it overlooks the river. My family (Hamilton) owns the very last house on the north end of Lynn St. on the east side--nearest the river. The Lytle family (which has also been on Lynn St. since the beginning of Roscoe) lived towards the south end and on the opposite side. (This is just to give you an idea exactly where your grandfather may have lived if you can locate him near either one of those families.) When I was a child there were still vacant lots on Lynn St. but that is not the case today. I also recall a candy store. I don't know if this could be your grandfather's or not, but it was Rossel's store then. It was very small, part of a house, and it gave the impression of being a very old building. The store part was very narrow, more like a hallway than anything else, with a wooden floor. There was just one long inverted L-shaped counter that separated 2 narrow corriders--one for the customer and the other for the salesperson. The leg of the L provided the barrier between the store and the house, and I remember that a curtain hung in the doorway to the living quarters, separating it from the store. There was no door, and the door to the outside was kept unlocked, at least during store hours. I remember that nothing else was sold in that store besides candy, and I always had the impression that it had been there for a very long time. The store was on the north side of Wayne St., which is perpendicular to Lynn St., and it was between the Moose Lodge and the old movie theater. I hope this helps some. If I learn anything else I'll forward the information to the list. 3. Hi Ellen, The paper you're looking for is the Charleroi Mail. The library at Monessen and also the Manderino Library in California have this paper on microfilm. The Monessen library also has some original copies, in very fragile condition, I'm afraid. This paper is a genealogist's dream--full of lots of local news and little tidbits sprinkled throughout the paper. Besides the usual--obituaries, death notices, etc., it carries births (including the baby's birth weight), marriages (including descriptions of the wedding), engagements, hospital admissions and discharges (on a daily basis), church and local club news, school news.
