    1. [PAMONVAL] Harris
    2. Seeking information on George Harris who was listed in the Quaker records in Harford Co, Maryland. He was born 12 June 1765. He is listed in the 1790 census in Deer Creek Hundred, Harford Co. In 1800 George HARRIS is found in Fayette County and in 1810 in Pike Run Twp, Washington Co. He may have been traveling with the family of Nathan and Richard JOHNS and Benjamin WILSON. The Johns family was related to George on his mother's side. They transferred to Redstone Monthly Meeting in PA. He is listed in Fayette Co, Luzerne Twp living near his younger brothers, Thomas and William. Any help appreciated with this family. I can't seem to find any information as to where or when George died, but it was probably between 1820-1830. Thank you. Carol Harris

    1. [PAMONVAL] New Additions to Web site.
    2. Mike Donaldson
    3. Hi All... It's been a while since I've had the chance to add much to the Mon Valley Web site, but I'll soon be able to get back in the swing of things. Just added are two, fairly large files, or more precisely 1 and a half: FINLEYVILLE Cemetery census. Gives the names, dates, ages, and lot numbers of all interments through 1999. This is two parts, the first of which is online now, (Surnames A-L). Part two (M - Z) will be uploaded soon. The total number of names when this is complete is about 3,100. Thanks to Priscilla Webb for her work, and to the management of the Cemetery for permission to post this list. The second scrapbook of Avarilla Bell Hess contains both newspaper clipping and handwritten notes that covers the mid Mon Valley. (Belle Vernon, Fayette City, Allenport areas predominantly. Thanks again to Teri Hewitt for her dedication and typing skills! I welcome any submissions from anyone to add to the list. I promise to upload data in a more timely manner, now that things are getting "back to normal". -- Thanks Mike Donaldson, Bentleyville, PA (mdonald4@bentcom.net) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mon Valley History and Genealogy Website: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~pamonval/ Mon Valley: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow: http://www.geocities.com/mdonald318/ My family gedcom: http://www.my-ged.com/donldson ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Listowner of: Monongahela River Valley of Penna Rootsweb mailing list: PAMONVAL-L@rootsweb.com - Mail mode PAMONVAL-D@rootsweb.com - Digest mode Bieneman / Bienemann Rootsweb Mailing list Bienemann-L@rootsweb.com - Mail Mode Bienemann-D@rootsweb.com - Digest mode

    1. [PAMONVAL] HORST Family Deaths
    2. Darrell & Nancy Giles
    3. While doing volunteer data entry at our local library in Ontario, California, I came across this article which might be of some interest to someone on this list. This does not relate to any surname that I am researching personally. Nancy Ontario Family Of Three Killed By Monoxide Gas Monoxide gas claimed its first victims of the winter season here when an Ontario dairyman, his wife and their 5-year-old daughter were found dead last night in their home, Euclid avenue and Riverside drive. The victims were Menno Horst, 25; his wife, Allene, 24; and their daughter, Evelyn Joan. A second daughter, Eleanor, age 13 months was on a visit at the time at the home of her great-grandparents, Mr and Mrs. B. P. Swarzendrubber, 690 First avenue, Upland. Discovery of the triple tragedy was made by Deputy Sheriffs J. R. Murray and D. M. Doughty, who were called to investigate after Mrs. Roy Roth of Upland, a cousin of the Horsts, reported to police she had gone to the dairyman's home to find it dark and that she and a neighbor, A. R. Huffman, had been unable to arouse occupants. The officers, forcing a rear door, found the dead bodies of Mr and Mrs. Horst in bed and that of the young daughter on the living room floor, indicating she was overcome by fumes from an open gas heater, which was burning high, while trying to escape. Relatives said the Horsts, who had previously heated their home by the oven in their kitchen gas range, had just purchased the open heater at a second-hand store. The baby, they said, had been taken to the Swartzendruber home to stay because Mr. Horst and Evelyn Joan were suffering from severe colds and it was believed for that reason they had left the heater on and opened no windows on retiring. Deputy Coroner E. P. Doyle estimated the three had been dead for some 18 hours when the bodies were found. They were removed to the Stone mortuary, where an inquest was pending. Mr. Horst, a native of Chambersburg, Pa., came here 15 years ago from Texas. He is the son of Mrs. L. K. Horst of San Antonio Heights and is also survived by five sisters and two brothers. Mrs. Horst, a native of Upland, was the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. George Beare, missionaries, now serving at Dhamtari, Central province, India. At the age of 6 years, she accompanied her parents to India, but returned six years ago and married. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. The Daily Report, Ontario, California Nov. 16, 1946 Arrange Triple Funeral Rites For Gas Victims Triple funeral services for Menno Horst, 26; his wife, 25, and their daughter, Evelyn Joann, 5, accidently asphyxiated Friday at their ranch home, Euclid avenue and Riverside drive, will be conducted Thursday, 2 p.m., at the Upland Brethren in Christ church, with the Stone mortuary in charge. Deputy Coroner E. P. Doyle, investigating the tragedy, resulting from leaving an open gas heater burning in a closed house, said there would be no formal inquest. Officiating at the funeral will be the Revs. John Leatherman, and Sherman Maust of Alpine Mennonite church and the Rev. Alvin Burkholder of the Upland Brethren in Christ church. Interment will be in Bellevue cemetery. The Daily Report, Ontario, California 18 Nov 1946

We have 12 days and counting to get the word out all across this great land we love and call the United States of America. Let's see how powerful email can be! THE PROGRAM IS THIS: On Thursday, October 11th, 2001, have everyone in the USA who will be driving a motor vehicle that day drive with their headlights on during daylight hours. This will be the 30th day commemoration in honor of our fallen friends desecrated by the terrorists' attacks on NYC , the Pentagon, and the highjacked plane that crashed in PA. The purpose of driving with headlights on this day will: 1). Show our respect, friendship, and tribute to all of those individuals who lost their lives on that dreadful September 11, 2001 day. 2). Show our concern for the family members of those individuals. 3). Show those uncouth terrorists that the fabric of the USA is stronger than steel. 4). Show that we Americans have solidarity standing shoulder to shoulder against any terrorists' acts upon the USA. You can probably add others to this list. Your contribution by sending this email on to others is greatly appreciated.

    1. [PAMONVAL] Seeking help in Westmoreland County, PA
    2. Christine Frawley Hill
    3. Hi! I have been helping my in-laws compile their family history. A lot has been done so for the most part, it's just a matter of pulling it all together. But, there is one line that no one seems to be able to find anything on and so I thought I'd see if someone here can help me. This is my mother in-laws grandmother and I would love to find the information for her as a Christmas gift :-) Mary (Mari) Shoemaker (Shoemaucher) was born in Paris, Seine, France in 1863. She was a stowaway on a ship and she either became pregnant on that ship or she was pregnant when she left France. I think it's possible she was pregnant when she left and that's why she ran away. There is one photo of her with several brothers and judging by her clothing, she was probably from a wealthy family. Rumor has it that she told the illigitimate daughter that she had come from great wealth. Mary (Mari) gave the child the name of Flora Mcdonald. The family thinks it's possible that the name Mcdonald was after an actress who was famous at the time (?). Flora was born on 13 Oct 1886 in Scot Haven, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania. Mary (Mari) married James Gilbert on 18 Jul 1887 in Fayette City, Fayette, Pennsylvania. Apparently he adopted Flora but I wonder if he legally adopted her and she just took on his name? Mary and James went on to have several more children, Christina, Willie, Archie, Andrew and Hilda. In 1897 Mary was murdered. I don't know much about the history of this except that James was apparently a minor and he was hired to cross the picket lines, which he did. Someone came to the house and when Mary opened the door, they shot her in the face. She died in Sewickly Township, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania. It seems there would have been something written in the newspaper at the time about this murder. I don't know if the family has ever tried to get her death record or not. I'm not sure what to do from here. If there is someone living in this county of PA who can do lookups for me, I would be happy to do lookups in Salt Lake for them in return. Thanks for any help you can offer ;-) Chris

The information of the Zediker deaths came from a file I made of all the deaths printed in a column published at the first part of each year for several years, submitted by the cemetery officials and Washington Health Department, covering a period of about 1880 to 1916, when I found the practice seemed to be discontinued. ZEDICKER, Belle Hamilton, 38 Springfield ave., 42 years 6 days, phthisis pulmonallis, female, white, married, American, Washington cemetery, 3 May 1912 ZEDICKER, Eliza, 70 years, dropsy, 13 Dec 1885 ZEDICKER, Lewis, 258 Broad st., 82 years 4 months 24 days, anasarca, male, white, single, American, Washington cemetery, 8 Jun 1909

    1. [PAMONVAL] An interesting accidental discovery.
    2. Victoria Hospodar Valentine
    3. I've rejoined this list because of a new discovery. I have been searching my old hometown newspapers for any and all obits and posting them to PA-SW-Obits. Well, in the process of taking digital pictures of the obits, I have come across a link to another relative. There was a mention of visitors to my grandmother while she was in Mercy hospital, and low and behold, in amongst all the known relatives is listed Mr. and Mrs. George Kosco, of McKeesport. Now, I knew of George, I even have some pictures of him, but didn't know where he was living, nor if he was married or not. Also, had little idea of the timespan he was living. George was my grandfather's (Michael Hospodar) cousin. Michael's mother was Anna Koscso so I'm assuming that George was her nephew. OK, now does anyone from McKeesport have any recollection of, or connection to this family? The newspaper was dated Sept. 24, 1959, so he was alive then. The is the most tangible lead I've had so far on this branch of the family. I'm so excited! What a lucky happenstance. Victoria Hospodar Valentine

    3. Hi List, Someone mentioned Osman Thomas as son of Hudson Thomas on 1880 Census. I don't have much information on Osman's generation but I do have for Hudson Thomas, whose full name was Thomas Hudson Thomas. He was born 5 September 1823 in Webster, Westmoreland, PA. He died at Braddock, PA in 1905. He was married to Asenath Bales Brown in Webster, PA 20 January 1853. Asenath was born in 1832 in Webster and died in 1877 near West Newton, PA. They had 6 children: Anna Bell, Harry, John Osman who died in 1908 at Kees Rocks, Charles Albert died in 1902 at Braddock, Edgar Cowall died Sept. 1909 in Mexico, Flora Thomas Colmary Thomas Hudson Thomas was the son of Benjamin Thomas and Hannah Alexander. Benjamin Thomas was born 27 Sept 1787 near Wellingborough, Burlington Co., NJ. He was the son of Thomas Thomas and Mary Grimes. Thomas Thomas was born 30 Jan 1761 in Wellingborough, Burlington Co, NJ. He was the son of David Thomas and Margaret Lucas. Go to www.FamilySearch.org on the net and Benjamin, Hannah , Mary and Thomas are well documented. Information was given to my grandfather to record for the Thomas reunions that were held annually beginning in 1908 at Rehobath Church in Rostraver Twp. Also there is a book David Thomas and His Descendents that is a bio of this family. Please forward this on to the interested party. I canned their email address ,realizing my mistake later. Jan

    1. [PAMONVAL] Hello Cousins
    2. My heart is so heavy, My mind is spinning, To think this could happen, Is worse than my imagination could ever create. I grew up in the Military life. When I was about 14 years old we became civilians. I was amazed at how different life was away from the military base families. People would say anything, always play tricks on each other, then there was the burning of our wonderful flags. Everyone seemed to take everything and everyone for granted. This was very hard for me to understand. My father went to war twice and the second time was when the Korean War broke out. At the time we were in Japan. I was raised to do what I was told and that I was to be seen not heard. It was a good feeling when I became of age to speak my own mind and to be able to follow thru on my own dreams when I became of age. As I was going to work this week the beautiful American Flag was everywhere. Everyone was saying prayers and I saw tenderness in eyes that I had never seen kindness in before. The flag always gave me a clean, peaceful, free and proud feeling about my country and life. I know what my Dad gave up to give our country a safe place to live in. He saw his whole Regiment killed in Korea. He was also wounded there. He received two purple Hearts. I can remember him saying with tears in his eyes about a year before he died that when he came back to the United States there was no one to great him. None of his family had time to come and visit him. That made my heart break. I wondered how many others in the war felt like they were deserted by their friends and family. They were taken for granted. When all this happened in New York, I became a child again when the I thought, "Oh My Lord My Father is not here to take care of everyone." I know that he would have tried to go to battle for our country, even at his age. To see how many wonderful people are working together cleaning up all the mess and watching our President and seeing his inter struggles has truly made me more proud of America than I could ever imagine. I am a Democrat. I have to say that the strength that our President in showing and his promise to see that Justice will be done has helped me with my political struggle and pain. I truly feel he comes from good genes even though I can't find a Bush in my Family Tree...lol... May God be with you all and hold your heads high Americans!
